UNrriiiD JAMES BENGOUGH, 0F NIAGARA FALLS, 'NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR T0 THE CARTR-CRUME C0., LIMITED, 0F NIAGAFA FALLS, NEW YORK. A CORPORATION OF CANADA.
To all whomit may concern: i v 'Be it known that l. .Txnrs citizenv of the United States'. residing at Bnxeoron, a
Niagara Falls, in the county of Niagara and State of Xew York, have invented certain new and usefuly improvements in Blank- Cutting llacliiues, of which the following is and one of its ohjeets'is tt'- provide etiieient f means for cutting sheets from a blank and for deliveriin.r the saine from the cutting device.
th'e above type characterized by simplicity and durability and adapted .to operate with a minimum amount ot' attendance on the. part of the operator.
Other objects will he in part obvious and v in part pointed ont hereinafter.
'l`hoinvention accordingly consists iii the features construetihn.'e'imhinations of elements and arrangement ot" parts. whieh' will he exemplified iii the mechanism herein# after described and the scope otl the. applica- BLANK-CUTTING MACHINE.
Specication of Letters Patent.
' Patented Jan. 18, 1910.
yApplication led July 11, 1906. Serial N o. 325.593'.
received one end of a beam 5, which is mounted to reciprocate verticali)- between the saine and he guided thereby. The upper ends of members 4 are heldin fixed relation byfineans of a. rai.` piece (t, one of which is shown in Fig. 1. said cap piece vbein; {'held iii position by suitable in vans, as,
in the present instance, bolts T. Secured lobcani 5, as by means of screws S, is :i knife oi' chopper il. Knife-v9 is beveled,-as at l0, and is ada ptr-d to be reciprocated with beam 5 lo and from the forward tio-acting edge of bed by means of a pitman 1t rotatively mountedup n threaded at either end into journal blocks y l 1;?, one of which is rotativeltv connected with Another object is to provide a machine of a headed member 13 extending from one end of beam 5, the other of und blocks bein;T
ur shatt t4 car- ,l' ried by a gear wheel )Ji-fixed upon a shaft pitmaii similar to the one shown is rotatively 16 that extends transversely o f tbe machine and is iournaled in the cross proces 1T ot the framework.
It will be understood, of course, that-a connected with the other headed member` 18 of beam 5 and connects the same Awith a tion of which will he indicated in the following claims.
ln the accompanying drawing. wherein is illustrated one of the several possible enihodiments ot' my invention, Figure 1 is an end elevation thereof. Fig. Q is a yiew in perspectire showing.;r the reciprocating cnt` ter support. the cutter and the means tor delivering the sluets when .severed thereby.
Fig. 3 is a view tu section of a portion ot' .similar spur shaft carried upon a wheel fixed upon shat'l; lt' at the opposite end of the machine. (lear wheel l5 meshes with a pinion 1.) fixed upon a shaft 20 which extends transversely of the machine 5nd is journaled between cross pieces 17 of the the machine showingr the relation of thel parts during the operation of cutting sheets from a blank.
Similar reference characters refer to simifraniing of the machine. A pulley 21 fixed upon shaft 2O is driven by a belt froml any Isuitable source of power, the rim of said palle)v preferably being made.' heavy to enable the saine to operate t a *fly wheel.
Extending between arms` 2:2 which extend forwardly from the framework of the mai chine at either end thereof. is an adjustable lar partsthi'oughont the several views of t l which are received in longitudinal slots in the upper portion of framework 1 a bed is supported, being fastened in position by suitable means, as screws 3. Ereeted upon framework 1 at either end thereof are a pair of memliers` 4 spaced apart, as shown,
gage 2? which can be held in :in v desired adjusted position b v means4 ot bolts :It
:said arms.- This gage terms au abutment for the forward edges of the blanks supported on the bed 2, as shown in Fig. and regulates the sixt; of sheets vto be cut there- Carried b v beam 5 and spaced therefrom,
i as by means of long eollais 25 whica receive screws QG threaded into said beam, is a depending frame 27, the lower end of which 1 is in substantially horizontal alinementwith and between eaeh pfi1rof these members is @the lower edge of knife 9.
lPirriax'rforniCiti. i
v ing with the driving mechanism, then descends upon the pile of blanks and sevcrsy llktending obliquely from underneath bed 2 and supported thereby, as by means of screws 28, is a chute 29 which is adapted to ,deliver the ent sheets into a hopper 30 secured to the frame ot` the machine, as by means of screws 31 and braces 32.
Pitman 11 is provided with a squared or hexagonal portion 33 adapted 'foi-'receiving a wrench by means of which the portions of the. knife t) with relation to the t'orwardredge of the bed can be adjusted. v
Having thus described the'structural features comprising in v invention, the operation, which should be to a large extent obvious, may be brieflj.Y described as follows: The operator standing in front of the inachine places a pile of blanks upon the bed thereof:` and'projects them forwardly underneath the knife until their forward ei'l'gcs are in contact with the gage which has been set previously to limit the ainountof thc forward projection of the blank according to the size of sheets it is desired to cut. Knife t). which is being continuously reciprocated by means of'pitmaii 11 connecttberefi'om that portion of the blank Aprojecting from the forward edge of the bed. .\t this point it may be well to note that. thc
`connection between pitiiiaii `ll and gear wheel 15 is such that when the knife is at its i upper and lower positions, the respective ends of said pitniaii and shat't lt' are substantially in aliiieiiient. By means of thisl arrangement of the parts, a slight dwell is produced at the upper and lower extremes of the reciprocating movements of beam 5, which gives the, operator sutticicnt. time properly to insert ythe sheets underneath t-lie reciprocatingknife. l
Simultaneously with the engagement of the knife. with the blanks, fraineti' has descended and is brought.; into' rengagement' therewith, as elearlysho'wn iii,A lig. 3. and as the sheets are being cut from the blank, said frame depresscs the outer ends;n of the citt sheets to clear `(he saine from engage nient 'ith the frage so that when the cutting operation is completedl the sheets will fall upon the chute 2!) and be delivered thereby into hopper 2&0, or said sheets may be readily grasped by the hand of a second attendant from' beneath gage 23.
It will accordiiiglir be apparent. that l have contrived etlicient mechanism wherein all the ends and objectsl of my invention are accomplished ina simple manner, and that such mechanism is exceedingly durable as the same is constituted by relatively few and strongly built opera-tive parts.
As many changes could be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention could be made Without departing from contained iii the above description or shown in the accompanying drawings shall beiiiterpreted as illustrative and not in a limiting YHavingdescribed m invention, what [j I. Aln mechanism of the class described, iii Combination, a bed, a reciprocating cutter adapted to .sever sheets, a gage for regulating the size ot' sheets to be sci-cred, means t'or causing:r said cutter to reciprocate toward and awa v from the, surface ot' said bed, and
