LUBRIOATOR FOR HANDSAWS. APPLICATION EILBD 111111.20, 1909.
946,241. Patented Jan. 11,1910.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES EDWARD LOWE, OF MOALESTER, OKLAHOMA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO WALTER CARL ELLIS; OF GUTHRIE, OKLAHOMA.
LUBRICATOR FOR HANDSAWS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES EDWARD Lown, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of McAlester, county of Pittsburg, and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in'Lubricators for Handsaws, of which the following is a full clear, and exact specification.
This invention resembles my invention for which Letters Patent were granted June 15, 1909, numbered 925,487, in that it is designed to fit any make of saw to be used as an attachment thereto, and is secured to the saw in the same manner without the necessity of making any alterations to adapt it thereto, It somewhat resembles my invention for which Letters Patent were granted July 13, 1909, numbered 927,866, in the construction of the mechanism for opening and closing the oil exit, as will later be more fully described.
Referring to the drawings forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is the handle end of a saw with my lubricator secured thereto, being a view of the refilling side thereof. Fig. 2 is a central sectional view showing the interior and working parts, and Fig. 3 is a central sectional view at right angles to Fig. 2.
The lubricator is preferably attached to the end of the saw blade beneath the handle. It is in this position best protected from accidental injury, and is near the teeth so that the oil may flow along the teeth when the exit is opened and be worked over the blade in the process of sawing. But if desirable the lubricator may be secured upon the back of the saw, but should be near the handle where it can be easily operated and less liable to be injured by a careless workman.
The lubricator consists of a reservoir 60 which may be of any convenient size and shape. I prefer to make it partly cylindrical and somewhat wedge-shaped, having the cylindrical wall I), the converging side walls 0 and (Z and the wall 6 afforded by the ejecting snout E. In one of the side walls (Z is a screwthreaded hole f. This is for refilling the lubricator and is provided with the screw 9, which, together with the washer it makes a tight closing of the hole. This side of the reservoir is preferably pro vided with a cylindrical flange 2', which provides a cup into which the oil may be Specification of Letters Patent. poured and the lubricator filled without the L need of a funnel and without the loss of any of the oil.
The snout E encroaches for a suitable dis tance upon the cylindrical conformation of the reservoir, affording the plane bottom 7'. The snout is preferably a continuation of the wedge shaped configuration of the reser voir. It is provided with the rectangular opening 7: extending from the bottom upward nearly to the reservoir, but separated therefrom. by the comparatively thin wall Z. An oil exit orifice m is provided in this wall afiording a communication between the reservoir and the snout opening. The sides of the snout are provided with the slots nn. These engage the saw blade 0 and make a snugmounting of the lubricator upon the blade. A lug 79 extends from one side of the lubricator and a set screw Q is screwed therein. The screw is tightened against the blade and is all that is needed to secure the lubricator to the saw, owing to the tight fit of the blade within the slots n n.
The operating mechanism is as follows: A vertical tube 1 extends through the reservoir. The bottom of this tube opens into the snout opening at one side thereof and the top opens into an enlargement 8. Through the tube extends the L-shaped controlling rod t, screwthreaded at the top to receive the pushbutton u. The horizontal member 12 of the controller is flattened forming a valve 20, which is positioned to cover the oil orifice m. A pin a; is secured in any suitable manner to the valve to. The pin projects into the orifice and is cut away preferably on the side nearest the rod If so that as the rod is pushed downward the cutout part of the pin will leave an opening in the port to permit an exit of the oil from the reservoir to the snout opening. When the valve is opened (as is done by pressing upon the pushbutton) the reduced part of the pin a will still remain in the orifice and will thus prevent the valve from being turned away from the orifice by accident or otherwise, and will always bring the valve centrally over it. To insure a perfect closing of the orifice, the valve is faced with a soft washer 3 ,-which is preferably secured between the valve and the pin before the latter is screwed upon the valve. To insure a return of the valve upon its seat automatically after the rod t has been depressed, a
spring is mounted upon the rod within the enlargement 8 having lts upper end pressing against the pushbutton u to force the i sary to make the opening /.c in the snout of sufficient width to receive the valve w. Blocks BB are therefore inserted in this 'opening and secured to the sides in any convenient way as by screws. A small space is left between these blocks and the blade (see Fig. 3) through which the ()ll flows lubricator upon the saw blade, a lug proatter it has left the reservoir.
Having thus described my invention I claim 1. A lubricator for a hand saw comprising a reservoir, a snout, an opening in the snout, an orifice between the reservoir and snout opening, a valve covering said orifice from below, a tube extending through the reservoir, opening at the bottom into the snout openin an enlargement at the top of the tube, a rod extendin through the tube and secured at the bottom to the valve, a pushbutton secured on the top of the rod and a spring mounted on the rod within the enlargement of the tube to maintain;
the valve. in normally closed position.
lice when the valve is lowered, a tube tending through the reservoir opening at the bottom into the snout opening, an en largement at the top of the tube, a rod extending through the tube and secured at the bottom oi the valve. a pushbutton secured on the top of the rod and a spring mounted on the rod within the enlargement of the tube to maintain the valve in normally closed position.
3. A lubricator tor a hand saw comprising a reservoir, a snout, an opening in the snout, slots in the snout for mounting the jet-ting from the lubricator, a set screw in said lug for securing the lubricator to the blade, an orifice between the reservoir and snout opening, a valve covering said orifice from below, a pin extending from the valve within the orifice to retain the valve centrally under the orifice, a reduced portion in the pin to permit an opening of the orilice when the valve is lowered, a tube extending through the reservoir, opening at the bottom into the snout opening, an enlargement at the top of the tube,a rod extending through the tube and secured at the bottom to the valve, a pushbutton securet 1 on the top of the rod, a spring mounted on A lubricator for a hand saw compris 1 mg a reservoir, a snout, an opening in the f snout, slots in the snout tor mounting the lubricator upon the saw blade, a lug projecting from the lubricator, a set screw 111 said lug tor securlng the lubricator to the blade, an orifice between the reservoir and snout opening, a valve covering sald orlfice the rod within the enlargement of the tube to maintain the valve in normally closed position, a threaded hole in one side of the lubricator to refill the reservoir, a screw for closing said hole and a flange around the said side of the lubricator to aid in refilling the reservoir.
