Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, RICHARD \VILSON, J11, a citizen of the United States, residing at Camden, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Condiment Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvement in condiment holders, the object of the invention being to provide an improved condiment holder, or more particularly an improved attachment for condiment holders, which is adapted particularly where the holder contains salt, to keep clear and open the perforations in the cover, and insure the escape of the salt when the holder is shaken.

A further object is to provide improvements of this character which can be cheaply manufactured, which will not detract from the appearance of the holder, and which will insure the escape of the salt when the holder is shaken, as long as there remains any salt in the holder.

lVith this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

1 represents an ordinary condiment holder, which for the purpose of illustration is shown containing a quantity of salt, 2. The holder 1 is provided with a screw threaded neck 3 to receive the screw threaded cap or cover a, the latter provided with a plurality of perforations 5, as is customary, for the escape of the salt.

6 represents a rod, which is securely riveted, or otherwise secured, in the center of cap or cover 4:, and is provided at its lower end with a flange or head 7 to which crossed rings 8 are secured by solder or otherwise. These rings 8 are preferably of wire, but can be made of various materials.

On rod 6 between the head 7 and cap or cover i, a ball 9 is mounted. This ball is eter of rod 6, so as to permit the ball to slide on the rod, and 'said ballis made with a series of radial pins or projections 11, for a purpose which will hereinafter appear.

In operation, when the holder is shaken in the ordinary manner to eject the salt the ball 10 is caused to reciprocate on rod 8, imparting tothe cap or cover 4;, sharp blows, which cause any salt sticking in the perforations 5, to be dislodged. At the same time the reciprocation of the ball 10, causes the radially projecting lugs or pins 11, to cut and disintegrate the particles of salt which stick together, and the movement of the body of salt in the holder, back and forth, past the rings 8, compels the body of salt to be cut up and disintegrated by contact in the rings. It will, therefore, be noted that while the action of the ball 10 serves to keep the perforations in the cover free from particles adhering therein, and also cuts the lumps or body of salt, the rings 8 further disintegrate the body or lumps of salt and an escape of the salt is insured regardless of how damp it may be.

Vhile I have described my improvements in connection with a condiment holder particularly adapted for containing salt, I would have it understood that my invention is in nowise limited to a salt shaker, nor to any particular form of holder, but I consider myself at liberty to put my improved structure to any use for which it may be adapted, and consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

1. An attachment of the character described, comprising a perforated cap or cover, a rod fixed at one end to said cap or cover, a head on the free end of said rod, crossed rings secured to said rod a weight havin an opening to receive said rod, movable on said rod, and adapted when the attachment is shaken, to pound against said cap or cover, and radially projecting lugs or pins on said weight.

2. In combination with a condiment holder, and a removable perforated cap or cover on said holder, of a rod projecting downwardly into said holder, and secured at its upper provided with a central opening 10, of a end to the center of said cap or cover, a
