Description
W. FEET.
ROLLER GASTER.
`lulllanullu 4 mu l TIS/E717 E s sesinirr WILLIAM FEET, 0F CINCINNATI, OHIO.
IROLLER-CAS'IXERA Application filed September` 18, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I WILLIAM PEET, a citizen of the United tates, and residing at Cincinnati, Hamilton county, State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Roller-Casters; and I do declare the following to be a clear, full, and exact description thereof, attention being called to the accompanying drawing, with the reference characters marked thereon, which forms also a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain improvements in the construction of casters, the object being to reduce friction and to produce an easy rolling caster adapted to support heavy articles.
In the following specication and particularly pointed out in the claims at the end thereof, will be found a full description of my invention, together with its parts and construction, which latter is also illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, shows a front-view of' the caster. Fig. 2, is a side-view of it. Fig. 3, is a View similar to Fig. l, parts being in longitudinal section. Fig. 4L, is a vertical cross-section of it. Fig. 5, is a vertical longitudinal or axial section of it. Fig. 6, is an enlarged perspective view of a certain part used in the construction thereof.
The center or axle of this caster is stationar and consists of two cylindrical parts 7-7 which have each two parallel bores 8 8. When these cylindrical parts are alined endwise, the bores in them register also as best shown in Fig. 5, and in which position they are held by two pins 11--11 between two depending arms 9-9, of a yoke 10. This yoke is pivotally swiveled to a base 12, by means of a pin 13, friction reducing-means 14 being interposed between the two.
l5 are attaching flanges projecting laterally from base 12 and perforated to admit attaching screws whereby the caster is secured in position.
16 is a cylindrical rim of a width approximately equal to the combined length of the two alined axle-sections 7 7 upon which it is supported. This support is not direct, but by means of interposed cylindrical rollers 17 which are all of equal diameter and occupy the space between the alined outer sides of the two axle-members 7-7 and the inner side of the rim. These rollers are beveled as shown at 19 and rim 16, hav- Specification of Letters Patent.

confined endwise in position, by heads or flanges 18, one on the outer end of each axlemember between which heads they longitudinally extend. The edges of these heads are beveled as shown at 19 and rim 16, having two similar internal bevels 20, one at each end, is fitted against these beveled edges 19 and thereby laterally confined in position. On the outside of each head 1S there is a fiat boss 21 whereby the caster is spaced from the inside of arms 9. As will be noted, only rim 16 moves and the same is firmly supported upon rollers 17 which are contained in the space between the inner side of this rim and the alined outer sides of both axle-members about which they are free to rotate. Friction is thus practically eliminated and a freely rolling caster is produced.
No novelty is claimed for the means, yoke etc. on which the caster is supported, nor on any particular manner for attaching it in position.
Having described my invention, I claim as new:
1. In a caster, the combination of a two, endwise alined axle-members, each of which has a head at its outer' end, a yoke having depending arms between which these axlemembers are rigidly secured, a rim fitted to close the space between the heads of the axle-members, but spaced from these latter, and rollers fitted to occupy the Space between the inside of the rim and the alined outside surfaces of the axle-members upon both of which members said rollers are simultaneously seated, said rollers being also endwise confined between the heads on the outer ends of these members.
2. In a caster, the combination of two, endwise alined axle-members, each of which has a circular, beveled-edge iange at its outer end, spaced arms between which these members are rigidly confined, a cylindrical rim equal in length to both these axle-members and having an internal beveled edge at each end, which ends are fitted to occupy the space between the beveled edges of the fianges on the axle-members, and rollers forming a support for this rim and fitted between these flanges and adapted to rotate freely around the axle-members upon the outside of both of which they are simultaneously seated.
3. In a caster, the combination of two depending arms spaced from each other, endwise alined axle-members fitted between these arms and each having two longitudinal, parallel bores and a Circular flange at its outer end, pins fitted to ooeupy the nlined bores in the alined axle-members and seated with their opposite ends in the arms mentioned, whereby the axle-members are rigidly held in position, rollers iitted eireumerentially around the outside of both axle-members upon both of which they are simultaneously seated and a cylindrical rim sented with its inner side upon these rollers and confined, together with these latter7 between the flanges at the ends of the axle-members.
In testimony whereof7 I hereunto afliX my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ILLIAM PEET.
