PASSENGER ELECTRIC-RAILWAY CAR.
Specification o1 .Letters Patent.
Application filed April 19, 1909.
atcnted Jain. 11, 1910.
Serial No. 490,896.
Sylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 1n` llusicnger llhuirn' i Railway Cars, of which the following is a specification,
My invention relates to Safety appui-ninfa ,for electric rnilvay cnrs; andin Such connection it has particular relation to menne for preventing the storting of :i enr, While any of the doors remain onen or nneioiul,
The principal objects of my invention :are first, to provide a slniplc and efficient means for preventino' the starting ot electric railA way cars, whi e any of the doors thereof remain open or unc osed, to thereby prevent accidents caused by the improper starting of the car, while passengers are in tho act of lentering or leaving the same as well as preventin assengers from jumping from the car wilxe): in motion; second, to provide in connection1 with the4 aforesaid device, means to automatically signal to the :notor- `rnfinwhen any of the doors of the` ear are opened or closed; and third, to provide in such a car, an emergency-switch, whereby the motorman can, under extraordinary circumstances /operate't'he car notvvithstend in some of the doors may be open.
invention is particularly applicable toe ectric railwa cars of the type known as pay-within or payas-you-enter cars, these cars as is well known, being usually provide with sliding or Swinging doors, which are maintained closed, while the cer is running, andmy present invention contemplates the employment of means to prevent improper starting or operation of cars of the said types, while any of the doors thereof remain unclosed or opened durin 'the running of the cnr as welles provi ing automatic signaling means in connection therewith.
The nature, scope and characteristic features of my present invention will he more readily undersood fromthe following-description taken in connection with the Paccompnnyin.I drawing forming arthereof, showing a iagranun tlc view o the wiring employed 1n one embodiment-of my invention, 1n an electricrailway car, but with only eo much of the conneclirn-z Aslum'n :is ie necvskuly, for' si, cmnnrchennhIn ol' thv .Suid invention.
Referring to the mowing il, if; one of the lines ot' u mailt circuit ot n ont', preferably thnt portion thereof running from the usual l hood Stv-,Titoli .ind "Rif-unit lncnltrrl to the controllore und :noto The' line 3, funn to a. contact 1i, of a circ-uitflirenltcr or ning net controller! switch It, the current passing through a. contacbhur 5, of the said circuit breaker it., to a. Contact 6, of the sziid circuit breaker, und thencrl through thc line T, to the ci ll "e ond ignoto l where the cur rent dintrihuted ontrouw, in the ueual manner. ln the prf'ecnt tmlliodiniclit of :ny invention, there is cn'iployed an nuxil` inry circuit for controlling; the circuitbreaker or magnet controlled switch A, this circuit being connected' by the liuc 8, to the trolley or to any other suitable live puit ot the car circuit, this auxiliary circuit. being controlled. by a switch 9, from which the current passen hy the line 1G to the line l1, and thence to the erm L, oin three-way Switch B.
The three-'Wav switch il, is controlled und actuated, in unison, 'with the actuation of a door of the car, the arm l), being connected by a rod b, either to the door or io u mechanism for operating the door in any suitable nmnner,'n0t shown, so that the switch erin b, will be actuated at all times, lin unison with the said door. When the door is closed and the switch B, is in the condition shown in the drnwing` the current passes from the switch arm I), through the contact b2, thence through the line l2, to the solenoid al, of the circuit-breaker A, energizing the saine, and causing the solenoid core a, to permit 'the contact-har 5, to bridge the terminals 4 and 6, and thus to maintain the main car-circuit unbroken at this point. Alter passing through the solenoid a, the current passes by the line 13, to the common' returnlll, connected with the traction-wheel 15, of 'the car, thence passingto the rail 16, constituting the common-return of the elec` tric railway system.Y When a door is in en o en position, the current will pass through tlije switch aru' b. to the contact b: thence through the line 17, the resistance 1`8.` and the trip-cntchcoil 19, which, in .thisV ar ticularembodiment of my invention as i lustrated is energized, to cause the trip catch a3, of circuit breaker A, to release t 1e contact bur 5, of said circuitbreaker A, to thereby ermit the maincii'cuit of the car to be roken at this point. After passing through the trip-catch-coil 19, the current passes by the line 20, to the common return 14, of the auxiliary circuit of the car. When the switch B, is actuated by the opening and closing of the door, the arm b, in assing from the contact b2, to the contact 3 will momentarily pass over a contact b, and permit the current to tiow through line 21 to a signal bell C, which is located in rox` imity to the motormans position, an will indicate to him the respective, o ening and closing 'of the doors, to guide im in .the olperation ofthe car. After passing through t e signal bell C, the' current returns by the line 22, to the common return 14, and thence to the main circuit of the railway system, as hereinbefore described.
It will be a parent that if the foregoing device be use in railway systems, where crossin are refliuent, there will be occa sions w en ossib ythe doors might be open and it Wou d be necessary to quickly move the car, to avoid collisions or other accidents, and this could not be done with any of the doors open at such times, as it will be readily understood that the main car-circuit will be' broken and beyond the control of the motorman, whenever the doors are open, and the solenoid coil al, is not energized. To provide for such an emergency, a switch D, lo-
' cated near the motorman is used, the arm (l1,
of which is connected by the line 23, to the main line 10, of the auxiliary circuit. The switch D, is normally maintained open in any suitable manner, but at the proper time can be manually operated by the moiorman, to cause the current to flow through contact d, and thence through the'line 24, which taps into the line I2, so that the current `ma y pass through the solenoid a1, to energize the same, and thus to close the main car-circuit controlled throu h the switch D. Likewise if the circuit breil tei' A, be closed, and conditions should arise where it is desirable for the motorman to arbitrarily open the same, by actuating switch D, the current may be permitted to How through the contact d", thence through the line 25, which taps into the line 17, and thence through t'lie resistance 18, and trip-catchcoil 19, to operate the trip-catch a", and thereby to open the circuit-breaker A.
By the foregoing means is provided a sim- ]ple and efficient apparatus for preventing` the operation of a car, while any of the doors of the same remain open, to the end that accidents may be prevented, as aforesaid, as well as `providing automatic means controll ,by the opening and closing of the doors, for `'signaling to a" motorman that l such'operation has taken place; and also providing a means of arbitrary control for the motorman, in case of emergency. While the said means have only been shown and described in connection with a single door of a car, it will of course be readily understood that thc same are applicable to a plurality of doors and such as are usually employed in street railway cars.
Having thus described the nature and ob- Jects ofmy invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent isz- 1. 1n an electric railway car, means to break the main car circuit when a door is opened, said means, comprising a circuitbreakentan auxiliary circuit for controlling the same and a switch actuated in unison with the door for controlling said auxiliary circuit.
