To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HUBBARD N. J 0s I YN, a citizen of the United States and res dent of Syracuse, in-the county of nondaga and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type to provide improved means whereby the platen of a typewriting machine may be turned to any desired position while the line space wheel is held fixed by its detent and whereby the platen may be positively clutched to the line space wheel at any position to which said platen may be adjusted. In devicesv for this purpose itis important that it be possible to adjust the platen to any desired position whatever, because an extremely sl' ht displacementof some of the letters out of line with the other letters is noticeable in typewriting. It is also very important that the platen and line space wheel be positively clutched together, as the line spacing lever is frequently operated with considerable violence and there will be a slippin of the parts if any such slipping is possib e. Devices in which the platen may be released from the line space wheel so as to render said platen independently rotatable for fractional spacing and in be agamsecured together in ad usted ,osition, have heretofore usually been o two general kinds: namely, those in which the arts are connected by some form of friction device and those in which they areconnected by some 'form of toothed clutch mechanism. The friction clutches'permit of an adjustment of the platen to any degree of fineness, but these clutches are open to a number of objections. It has been found extremely difliis violently operated and such clutches have usually comprised a stiff spring, the tension to be overcome by hand when of which had the clutch was disengaged. My invention is applicable to typewriting machines generally but I have here shown it applied to that sort of typewriting machine in which the keys and printing instrumentalities are mounted in a stationary frame/ and in which the paper is passed about a rotary platen. Some of the features shown in the drawings are those ordinarily employed in the Monarch typewriter. This machine has a paper carriage comprising two forwardly extending end pieces 1, in which is mounted a roller platen 2. Said platen has a shaft 3 having a left-hand finger wheel 4 and a right-hand fin er wheel 5 mounted on the ends thereof an secured to the'shaft by set screws 6 threaded through the hubs of the finger whetls and engaging the shaft. Just inside of each'of said. hubs there is a bearing sleeve 7 that loosely surrounds the shaft and that passes through the and piece 1 of the carriage where it is secured in position by a set screw 8 threaded through said end piece from below andengagin the sleeve. Where, in the claims, I use the word tooth or its derivatives, referring to the teeth 26, I mean such expressions to be construed broadly to include any configuration of the parts resulting in contact or engaging surfaces having the function of the teeth 26 shown in the present instance. It may loe possible to produce these contact or engaging surfaces without producing teeth which project like those shown in the drawings; and I would regard such constructions as bein the equiva'lents of that shown and described in the 1 present case.- The projections 16 are cut as shown in Fig. 4. at 27 in order to permit of the insertion of the screws 14.. 'As shown in the present instance these teeth have their opposite faces at an angle of about 60 with-"each other. I have found this to be a good angle for the purposes of this form'of the invention, but 110 it may be varied. to a considerable extent. Each of the dogs-18,19 and 20 has its outer end formed'into a tooth 28 adapted to enter the notches or recesses between the teeth 26, the two faces of the teeth 28 being inclined 1 to correspond with the inclination of the working faces of the teeth 26 so that if the platen happens to stand in the position shown in Fi 3 for example, in which the tooth 28 of a e dog 20 happens to extend to 120 the bottom of the notch between two of the teeth 26, the tooth 28 fits nicely in said. notch. The platen head 13 inside of the platen 2, has a part 3O that fits snugly within the 125 core of t e platen, and a cylindrical extension 30 in which are three holes 31,extend ing from the left-hand face of the platen head and terminating short of the righthand end of the extension 30. In these holes 3 uncouple or disengage are seated three plungers 32, having sprin s 33 compressed between their right-hand en s and the bottoms of the holes 31. The lefthand end ofeach of these plungers is beveled, as shown in Fig. 1, at 34 to form a Wedge or cam which contacts with the inner end of one of the dogs 18, 19 and 20, which inner ends of'said dogs are formed at an inclination corresponding to that of the wedge face 34. The construction is such that the springs 33 press the plungers 32 toward the left and the wedge or camming action of these plungers tendsto press the dogs 18, 19 and 20 firmly into engage ent with the teeth 26 of the line space w eel. The inclination of the wedge 34 isso slight that even if very great pressure be exerted tending to move the dogs 18, 19 and 20 toward the shaft 3, such pressure would not cause the plungers to be moved toward the right. The construction is such that when one of the dogs is thus wedged into engage- -ment with one or both of the sides of a notch between two of the teeth 26, such engagement is positive and cannot be released by pressure on the dog. "When it is desired to the platen from the line space wheel all of the wedges 32 are pressed toward the ri ht against the tension of their springs 33 y a disk 35 slidably mountedon the shaft;3 just the left-hand ends of said wedges. The shaft 3 has a longitudinal slot 36 cut therein and a pin 37 proects from the disk 35 into said slot. A pus pin 38 lies loosely in the longitudinal slot 36 and extends out through the middle of the left-hand finger wheel 4, said push rod having a push button 40 mounted on its outer end. In order to bring the outer end of the rod 38 into the axis of the shaft 3, said rod is off-set as shown at 41 and the slot is deepened near the end of the shaft, as shown at 42. The ofi-set 41 prevents the push rod 38 from being withdrawn lengthwise from its seat. struction'is such that if the button 40 be pressed toward the right, the rod 38, acting 1 onthepin'37, will push the disk 35 towar the right, pressing all of the wedges 32 back to the position shown in Fig.5.
I have provided means for withdrawing the dogs 18, 19 and 20 from the recesses or notches in the line space wheel when the button 40 is pushed in as described. In the form of the invention shown in Figs. 1 7,

I have provided a cover. 47 which is secured to the platen head 13 by screws 48 (Fig. 1) which pass through said cover and are threaded into openings 49 the flanges 16. The cover 47 is recessed in the middle to permit of the motion of the disk 35 and it also has an annular groove I 50.formed in its right-hand face to aoconr modate the pins 43 and springs 44. The inner end of this cover is seated within the flan e of the line spacing wheel which carries the teeth 23 and forms a bearing therefor and also engages the inwardly projecting-flange of the line space wheel and retalns said wheel in position, preventing displacement of said wheel toward the left. Said cover also retains the dogs 18, 19 and 20 in position in their guide-slots and protects the parts from dust and injury.
The "partsare so designed that the angular distance from the point of the tooth 28 of one dog to the point of the tooth of either of the others is not equal tance occupied by any whole number of the teeth 26. This relation may be secured in any one of a number of ways. In the present instance I have shown fifty-seven teeth 26. This number fifty-seven is exactly d1- visible by three so that if the points of the teeth 28 of the dogs 18, 19 and 20 were uniformly spaced, that is to say, if they were spaced 120 apart, the relation above referred to would not obtain. As shown in the diagram in Fig. 6, the points of the teeth 28 of the dogs 19 and 20 are off-set from the center lines of said dogs so that the distance from the point of the tooth 28 of the dog 18 to the point of the tooth 28 of either of the dogs 19 and 20 is equal to nineteen and onefourth of the teeth 26 and the distance between the points of the teeth 28 of the dogs 19 and 20 is equal to eighteen and one-half of the teeth 26. When the parts are in the position shown in Fig; 2 the dog 18 is in full engagement with one of the notches between two successive teeth 26,the dog 1.9 is in about one-half engagement with one side of one of said notches and the dog 20 in about onehalf engagement with one side of one of said. notches. It will be noted that in this particular position of the parts the dog 18 tends to hold the line space wheel from turning relatively 'to the platen in either direction and if this dog had a sufficiently tight fit in its 4 slot 17 it would alone be sufficient to hold the wheel. this position of the parts the dog '19 willosit1vely prevent rotation of the line spacmg wheel relatively to the platen in .the direction of the arrow in Fig. 2, and that the It will be. perceived that in' (Fig, 4) in to the angular dis- &

The poorest engagement that can be effected between the parts is that shown in Fig. 3 inwhich a I tooth of one of the dogs, say 20, is in full enhold the line spacing wheel against any rdtation whatever relatively to the platen. Ordinarily the platen would not happen to be arrested relatively to its line spacing wheel in either of the two positions shown in Figs.
2 and 3 but in some intermediate position in which no one of the points of the teeth 28 would extend fully to the bottom of the notch between two of the teeth 26. No matter what relative rotative adjustment the parts may have there will always be at least one of the dogs that engages one side of one of the notches when the clutch is in operation and thus positively prevents rotation of the line spacing wheel independently of the platen in one direction and at least one other dog that engages the opposite side of another notch and thus prevents rotation of the line spacing Wheel independently of the platen in the o posite direction. The line spacing wheel will thus always be positively locked against turning relatively to the platen in either direction and these two elements will therefore be rigidly and positively clutched together so that an actuation of the line spacing mechanism at this time will cause the line spacing wheel an'd platen to turn together.
It will be understood that the springs 33 do not need to be heavy springs but may on the contrary be rather light sothat the force with which the dogs are pressed into the re cesses between the teeth 26 is not sufiiciently great to cause the platen to turn with relaT tion to the line space wheel should one do engage in advance of another, but when al of the dogs are pressed to operative position the wedges 32, 34 positively retain them in such positions so that they cannot be moved back toward the shaft 3 by any force applied at their outer ends. I
It will be understood, of course, that the different wedges 32 will usually move different distances when the pressure of the fingcr'or thumb on the button 40 is released.
Thus when the parts stand in the position shown in Fig. 3, the dog 19 is nearly in its retracted position and the corresponding wedge 32 has therefore been permitted to move toward the left but a short distance. The dog 18 has moved farther from its retracted position and its wedge 32 has there fore moved farther toward the left. The
dog 20 is in its extreme outer fully engagedposition and the corresponding wedge must therefore have moved 'to its extreme lefthand position. If the button 40 be now pushed in, the disk 35 will obviously first encounter the wedge 32' associated with the dog 20, next that associated with the dog 18 and last of all that associated with the dog 19. If the button be released without moving the platen the springs 33 will move the button toward the left. In this motion the wedge 32associated with the dog 19 will obviously be arrested first, thenthe wedge' 32 associated with the dog 18 will be arrested and last of all the wedge 32 associated and 10, most of the parts that are common to the two forms of the invention are designated by reference characters similar to those used in the other figures. The form of the platen head 13 and the line space wheel are the same as those already described. The
three dogs 18, however, do not have thepins 43 but each of said dogs has projecting from its inner end toward the left a toe or cam 51 as shown in detail in Fig. 10, said cam'being adapted to coiiperate with the inner surface 0 an internally. coned flange formed on the pusher or d1sk 35*. Then said disk is pushed toward the right to the position shown in Fig. 9 the inclined conical surface of this flange engaging the inclined faces of the toes 51 positively cams the dogs toward the shaft 3, thus positively withdrawing them .from en agement with the teeth 26. In this form of the invention each of the plungers .or wedges 32 has a straight extension 53, the end of which is adapted to contact with the flat face 54 of the disk 35*. When the rod 38 is pushed toward the right this flat face of the disk 35, acting on the prolongations 53 of the Wedges 32 pushes said wedges toward the right and in y the last part of the motion of the disk35 the coned face of the fiange52 engages the toes 51 and withdraws the dogs to their inoperative positions.
