Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY M. Fnnox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Golumbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Type-Setting Mechanism, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of type setting mechanism and has particular relation to that class of type setting devices or machines which are adapted to be used in conjunction with machines for producing printed reproductions of letters, circulars, bulletins etc, in which type of special forms are employed.
The objects of my invention are to provide an improved structure of this class by means of which the type may be rapidly and effectively set in printing position; to provide improved means for ejecting the desired type from a supply rack or tube; to provide improved mechanism for inserting the type into the form grooves and to construct my improved type setting machine in a simple and inexpensive manner, with such arrangement of parts as to insure a positive operation thereof.
Further objects of my invention will be pointed out hereinafter.
These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a central vertical section of my improved type setting machine, Fig. 2 is a transverse section on line ma1 of Fig. 1, Fig. 3 is an enlarged vertical section of the lower portion of the machine at one side thereof, showing the means for ejecting the type from a type-holding tube or rack, Fig. l is a detail plan view of a portion of the rotating type carrier and a portion of the adjacent type receiving form, Fig. 5 is a central vertical section of a portion of one of the type supply tubes or racks, showing a plurality of type therein, Fig. 6 is a detail view in perspective of one of the type which I employ, Fig. 7 is a partial longitudinal section through the type receiving form, and, Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional view on line 64-66 of Fig. 1, illustrating the manner of holding the upper end portions of the type supply racks or tubes in detachable engagement with the frame of the device.
Similar characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention, I employ a framework which comprises a fixed horizontal upper frame ring 1, a lower fixed frame ring 2, and below the latter a supporting base 3. Rising from the center of the base 3, is a vertical fixed shaft 4, the upper end of which supports the upper frame ring 1 in the manner hereinafter described.
Connected with and surmounting the upper frame ring 1 is a circular casing 5, which is formed, as shown in the drawing, with an inclined top plate or key-board 5. The lower portion of the casing 5 is reduced in circumference as indicated at 5 and this reduced portion fits snugly within the upper portion of the frame ring 1. This circular reduced casing extension 5, is provided with a central hub member 5 from which rotate frame arms 5 the outer ends of which are formed with the reduced portion of the cas ing 5.
The lower ring frame 2, which is in the form of a short cylindrical body, is provided with a central horizontal division plate or disk 6, which has a downwardly extending bearing hub 6. Rotatably mounted upon the fixed shaft 1 below the hub 6 is the central hub member 7 of a horizontally disposed type carrying wheel 7 and between the hub member 7 and the hub 6 and between said member 7 a and the base 3, are provided bearing ball runways 8 in which are mounted anti-friction bearing balls 9. The wheel or ring-like member 7 has its solid rim portion 7 formed with an upper side continuous way or recess 7 which results in the formation of an upwardly projecting rib or wall member 7 at the inner side of the rim 7 The way or comparatively wide channel 7 comprises a comparatively shallow outer side lateral enlargement or offset 7. lVithin the way or channel 7 is arranged a horizontal ring plate 10, the latter having its upper side on a level with the channel mouth and being thus supported in said channel by upwardly extending lugs 10*, which are connected, as shown, with the inner surface of the lower portion of the frame ring 2.
11 represents longitudinal channeled type supply racks or tubes, each of said tubes being substantially square in cross section and having formed in its outer face and extending throughout its length, a slotted opening 11 of less width than the face of the rack or tube. These tubes thus formed are arranged vertically and parallel one with the other at equidistant points on the outer sides 1 is the vertical arm of a bell crank key lever of the frame members 1 and 2, the lower ends of the tubes being flush with the lower end of the frame member 2. The upper portion of each of the tubes is held in detachable engagement with the ring 1, by providing in the periphery of said ring a vertical peripheral recess 1 in which is secured a spring clamping member or channeled keeper 1 into which the upper portion of the tube is adapted to be sprung and frictionally held in the manner indicated more clearly in Fig. 8 of the drawing. The lower end portion of each of the tubes 11 is inserted between the outer surface of the frame member 2 and a holding band or strip 12 which surrounds the base of the frame member 2, said band being throughout the greater portion of its length, at a suitable distance from said frame member, but having its end portions secured to said frame member at the rear side of the machine.
At a point on one side of the machine, I pivot to the upper side of the ring plate 10, a cam plate 13, which flares or widens toward its outer or lower end (see Figs. 2 and 4:) said wider portion being adapted to overlap the groove or way 7 which groove or way is covered by a cover strip 14 which, for the sake of clearness in illustration, is removed from the rim of the revolving mem ber 7 in Fig. 2 of the drawing, and partially removed therefrom in Fig. 4. As shown more clearly in Figs. 2 and 4c of the drawing, that portion of the rim 7 which projzects above the bottom of the way or groove 6 is at a desirable point cut away, one end of the rim thus formed having an inclined inner grooved bevel as shown at 7 and the other end being tapered, as shown. The inner wall flange 7 of the wheel rim 7, is also separated or cut away at a desirable point, forming terminals, one of which is indicated at 7 in Fig. 2 of the drawing and which is extended outward over a portion of the channel 7 into close proximity to the inner edge of the fixed ring plate 10. To the rim 7 b and in the outer wall of the offset or channel 7 I aflix a spring strip 15 having an outwardly bent or L-termination at the tapered end of the rim 7", the free end of said spring strip thus normally projecting within the channel or way 7 At a point on the wheel 7 within the channel 7 and near one end of the wall 7, I provide an upstanding pin 16 which is in position to contact with the inner side of the cam plate 13.
In the construction of the inclined keyboard 5, I provide the same with the desired number of vertical openings 5 and on the underside of said key-board, adjacent to each of said openings, is provided a down wardly extending bracket arm 5 Extending loosely through each of the openings 5 17, which is surmounted by a lettered or numbered finger button 18, the remaining arm of said key lever being pivoted in t1 e adjacent bracket arm 5 With the lower end of each of the key levers 17, is pivotally connected the upper end of a downwardly extending operating rod 19, there being one key lever and one of said rods 19 for each of the type supply tubes 11. The rods 19 pass loosely through openings 20 formed adjacent to the periphery of the plate 6, the lower end of each of said rods being pivotally connected at 21 with the short upper arm of a bell crank 22, which bell crank is pivoted in a downward projection of the plate 6. The lower and normally vertical arm of each of the bell cranks 22 engages an opening in a horizontally disposed ejector plate or plunger 23, the latter having its inner end downturned or of hook form, said hook member normally engaging the wheel rim wall 7 and the forward portion of the ejector which lies upon the rin plate 10, having its termination below ant in vertical alinement with the inner wall of the corresponding tube or rack 11, there being one of the ejectors for each of said tubes or racks.
In order to provide a means of rotating the wheel member 7, I provide the underside of said wheel with a grooved pulley projection 24, about which may pass a driving belt from the belt wheel of a suitable motor.
At one side of the wheel member 7, I support horizontally a form plate 25, the upper surface of the latter being slightly above the rim 7' of the revolving wheel. In producing the plate 25, I form in the upper portion thereof transverse angular and parallel kerfs or recesses 26, the ends of which are in the direction of the adjacent side of the wheel 7 and with the lower portion of the plate 25, I provide a tongue 25 which is adapted to run in a correspondingly shaped groove 27 formed in a form plate supporting base 28, thus providing means for sliding said form plate upon said base.
Each of the type supporting tubes is designed to be filled or partially filled with a plurality of type, such as are indicated at 29 and each of which, as shown, comprises a body of channel form, one of the parallel arms of said body being longer than the other and having formed therewith on its upper face a raised letter, numeral or character 29. These type when arranged in one of the supply tubes, have their shorter arms bearing upon the upper sides of the longer arms of the type bodies below, while the lower type at the bottom of the tube, bears upon the outer portion of the ring plate 10 and immediately in front of the outer end of the corresponding ejector 23. It will be understood that all of the type in one tube,
' appears a corresponding character.
It will be understood that in operation, a comparatively rapid rotary motion is imparted to the wheel member 7 and that if during this rotary motion of said wheel, a key button which we will assume is that marked A, is depressed or a downward pressure imparted thereto, the upward pull imparted to the corresponding rod 19, must result through the connection described between the bell crank 22 and corresponding ejector 23, in a tendency of the ejector to slide outward on the plate 10, such movement of the ejector being prevented only by the contact of the hook end of the ejector with the wall 7. It is obvious, however, that when said ejector hook member, is by rotation of the wheel 7, opposite the opening which is formed as described, between the ends of the wall 7 the ejector will be free to move outward, thereby forcing the last type of the A stack, into the recess 7 of the rim of the wheel 7. The type thus ejected, will by the rapid rotation of the wheel member 7 be carried within the recess 7 until it is lodged between the outer inclined edge of the cam plate 13 and the outer wall of said recess. Through the continued rotation of the wheel member 7, it is obvious that the outturned end of the spring strip 15, will come into contact with the type thus located, thus imparting further movement to the type, which through contact with the cam plate 13, will be forced laterally to the position shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing, this lateral movement of the type being the result of the passing contact at the proper time of the pin 16 and the inner side or edge of the cam plate. lVhen the type is in the position indicated in Fig. 2 of the drawing, it will be understood that its vertical portion and lower and short arm are in positions to enter one of the angular kerfs 26 of the form block, the longer character carrying arm 29 of the type being adapted to lie in printing position when the type is thus inserted upon the surface of the block between two adjacent kerfs. It will be understood that the type is further forced into the kerf by the contact of its outer side with the beveled outer face of one of the terminal portions of the rim flange 7.
It will be understood that a key lever and the parts connected therewith when operated as above described, will be caused to assume its normal position after operation, by the engagement of the outturned terminal 7 of the wall 7 with the hook termination of the operated ejector 23, this operation being assured by tension of springs 17 which are arranged between the longer key lever arms and the underside of the key board. By depression of the proper keys and by the operation of the parts, which follows the depression of said keys in the manner described for the A key, it is obvious that letters, and figures such as are desired to produce printed material therefrom, may be successively driven into the angular type recesses or kerfs 26, thereby setting the type in a row therein in position for producing a printed impression therefrom by any suitable means. It will be understood that when one type line is complete on the form, the next succeeding form kerf may be filled by sliding the form the proper distance on its support 28.
It will be noted that by my improved construction, positive means are provided for successively discharging type from a plurality of type holding tubes or rack bodies and for rapidly and positively inserting said type one after the other in printing positions within the form kerfs.
It will be notedthat by the operation described, the type are ejected from beneath the type-holding tubes in such manner as to insure the delivery to and carrying of the type by the revolving member, with the face or printing projection of the type uppermost. It will also be observed that by my construction, but one of the ejectors may be released at a time, as the remaining ejectors are locked through engagement of their hook terminations with the wall 7, thereby preventing errors which might result from the depression of more than one key at a time and insuring a proper successive discharge of the type from their various supply tubes.
lVhat I claim, is:
1. In a type setting machine, the combination with a rotated type carrying member having a type way therein, said type way having an outer side discharge opening and a plurality of type supply tubes, of a movable ejector for each of said tubes, and means whereby said cjectors are held against outward movement until opposite said type,- way opening.
2. In a type setting machine, the combination with a rotated type carrying member having a type carrying way therein provided with a type outlet, and means for antomatically feeding type one at a time into said way, of a device carried by the rotated member projecting within the type way, means for engaging a type opposite said way opening and ejecting it horizontally therethrough, and a form for receiving the ejected type.
In a type setting machine, the combination with a rotated type carrying member having a type way therein formed witha peripheral outlet, and means for successively feeding type on to said way, of a yielding type engaging member projecting into said way, and pivoted means for insuring a lateral movement of said type opposite said opening.
4:. In a type setting machine, the combination with a rotated type carrying memher having a type way therein within a peripheral type retaining flange, the latter having an opening therein, and one end of said flange having an outer side bevel, of means for successively feeding type on to said way, a yielding type engaging member projecting into said way, and pivoted means for insuring an outward movement of said type to a position for engagement with the beveled flange end.

In a type setting machine, the combi' nation with a rotated type carrying member having a type way therein, said type way having a perlpheral openlng 1n the wall thereof, a plurality of type supply tubes arranged above said rotating member, and a normally locked horizontally sliding ejector for each of said tubes, of key levers, connections between said key levers and said sliding ejectors for moving said ejectors beneath said type tubes, and for automatically returning said ejectors to their normal positions.
7. The combination of a rotary table for receiving type and delivering it under the influence of friction, a pivoted type-ejector, a pin located permanently on said rotary table, and means whereby said pin engages said typeejec'tor, thereby causing it to move outwardly.
8. In a type setting machine, the combination with a plurality of type carrying tubes, of means for laterally ejecting the lowermost type from said tubes, a rotative table having an annularly channeled upper face located beneath said tubes, a non-rotative member lying within said channel, and a horizontally swinging type ejector pivoted to said member.
