It will be understood from an inspection of Figs. 1 and 9 that two cut-outs or recensus 44 may be formed in the spindle 11 for cooperation with the set screw 13, so that the finger wheel may be connected to the spindle as shown in 'Fig. 1 or may be moved along and secured further out on the spindle. as shown in Fi 5). It is desirable to provide means for lockiug the releasing device in the released posi' tion in order that both hands of the o r- Ill-01 may be free to manipulate the mac ine when desired. To this end I have provided, in the construction shown in Figs. 9 to 13, means whereby the spindle 11' or 11" may be locked in the innermost or releasin ceition. Thus, from an examination 0 i 9. 10 and 11, it will be seen that two of 16 side walls of the slot or key wa 14" in the nipple 10 which pit-ejects inw ly from the le t-ha-nd platen cad, are cut away laterally at 45. The construction shown in Fig. 12 is similar to that embodied in Figs, ll, It) and 11. except that the locking worse-s 48 are mntnined in the outer end of the nipple 10 instead of bein arranged in the manner shown in the other figures; and in the construction shown in Fig. 12 the parts are so arranged that a full, inward movcun-ut of the spindle ll will move the feather 15 entirclv out of the he -\\'uy slot H" and heyoud the inner end 0 the nipple. A slight turning movement of the s mdlc. when in this position, will cause the Feather 15" to be brought opposite the locking openings 48 and when the feather is in register with said openings the spring 19 will force the feather into locking eng ment in the openin s, as shown in dotted ines in Fig. 12, thus loc ing the spindle and fin 'er wheel to the platen head while the clutch actuating device is maintained in the released position and the platen is free to turn independently of the inc spacing wheel.

It will be understood that the inner side wall of the groove 49 constitutes a circum ferential shoulder against which the lock bears to revent an outward movement of the spindle and that in the construction shown in Fig. 18 it is only this circumferen' tial shoulder which is essential for cooperation with the locking member.
The recesses or notches 44 hereinbefore referred to enable the finger wheel to be adjusted in either one of two positions as heretofore pointed out. When the finger wheel has been adjusted as indicated in 1' lg. l, for instance, it will limit the inward movement of the s indle and in a construction such as that s iown, for instance, in Fig. 9, will prevent the locking means from being rendered effective or o erative. That is to say, if the finger whee be moved inwardly on the spindle and the set screw 13 is seated in the innermost recess 44, then the spindle will be prevented from moving inwardly far enough to bring the feather 15 (Fig. 9) to a position where it may be turned laterally and enga in the locking recesses or openings 46. ll, however, the finger wheel be secured in its outermost position then the locking means are rendered operative when the spindle is pushed in.

The means for lockin the spindle or actuating device in the re eased position constitutes an important feature 0 the present invention.

This will enable the operator to see whether the feather is seated in the locking opening or is in the key-way, or in other words to see whether or not the spindle is locked in the releasing position.
'What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:--
1. In a typewnting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen, a line spacing wheel therefor, connecting devices for causing the platen and line spacing wheel to turn together or to allow! a turning of the platen m ependently of the line spacing wheel, a part for actuating said connecting devices, and a sliding hand actuated lockingmember carried directly b the carriage and adapted to engage sai part for actuating the connecting devices, for locking said actuat ng part against movement in one directlon.
2. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen, a line spacing wheel therefor, connecting devices for causing the platen and line spacing wheel to turn together or to afford a turning of the platen in ependently of the line spacin wheel, a spindle adapted to move longitu inally and to turn with the laten, means whereby said spindle is operab c to actuate the connecting devices and to turn the platen inde endently of the line spacing wheel when sai connecting devices are released, and a locking device operable to lock the spindle against longitudinal movement and to thus lock the connecting devices in the released position.

12. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a line spacing wheel, a platen ada ted to rotate with or independently of sai line spacin wheel, a spindle which is movable longitu inally of the platen and s connected to turn the same, a frame that is carried by said spindle and is freely movable in a direction at substantially right angles thereto, rollers carried by said frame, arms between which said frame is adapted to move and against which said rollers bear, grippers controlled by said arms, and locking means for locking the spindle at the limit of its longitudinal movement in one direction and for locking the grippers released.
13. In a typewriting machine, the comhi nation of a line spacing wheel, a platen adapted to rotate with or independently of said line spacing wheel, a spindle, a spring for moving said spindle in one direction, a guide pin that projects from said spindle at substantially right angles thereto, an a'ctuator mounted to move transversely of said spindle on said guide pin, arms between which said actuator extends, clamping devices actuated by said arms, and locking means for locking the spindle against the tension of said spring.
14. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a line spacing ratchet wheel provided with a flange, a platen carrying within its hollow core means for normally locking it to the ratchet wheel and comprising a platen head secured to the platen, grippers loosely seated in sockets or channels in the platen' head and having jaws which are adapted to en age the flange of the line spacing atchet w ieel, an actuating device opersting on the inner ends of said levers, a spindle carrying the actuating device and provided with a spring to hold the actuating device in the operative position between the rippers, said actuating device comprising a rame carrying anti-friction rollers that bear on the grip ersand which frame is adapted to move in ependently and transversely of said' spindle, means for releasing the actuatin device and unlocking the jaws, and locking means for locking the releasing means in the released position.
15. 21. In a typewriting machine, the combination of a line spacin wheel; a platen adapted to-turn with an independently of q wheel; engagin devices for connecting the line spacing wheel and platen; and means for controlling said engaging devices, said controllin means comprising a spindle that is adapted to be moved ongitudinally of the platen, an actuator that is adapted to move in one direction at substantially right angles to the axis of said spindle and which comprises a sheet metal frame with integral contact fingers struck up from said frame, which fingers cooperate with the spindle to prevent a movement 'in another direction at right angles to the axis of the spindle.

In a typewriting machine, the combination of a carriage, a platen, a line spacing wheel therefor, spring-pressed connecting devices for causing the platen and line spacing wheel to turn together or to afford a turning of the platen independently of the line spacing wheel, the spring of the springpressed connecting devices operating normally to maintain the line spacing wheel and platen connected, a spindle controlling said connecting devices, means whereb said spindle is adapted to moye lon itudinally to turn the platen, a finger whet i fixed to said spindle and having a circumferential -oove therein, and a locking device movai lv mounted on the carriage and adaptedv to be seated in said groove to hold the spindle against the tension of said spring and against longitudinal movement but to afford a turning of the finger wheel spindle and platen.
