To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, TiioMAs 0. Gimme, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vertically-Adjustable Curtain-Supports, of which the following is a specification.

My present invention has for its object devices simplifying the raising, lowering, hanging and adjusting of curtains, portieres and the like, and so simplifies said operationsthat the curtains can be almost instantly and at any moment raised and lowered, adjusted or otherwise gotten at by a person standing on the floor and without the use of a step-ladder.

The advantages and great utility of the invention will further appear from an understanding of the following specification and of the drawings illustrating one of the forms which my invention may take.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front ele vation of a window provided with devices within the scope of my invention shown supporting a curtain pole and curtains; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the devices in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a perspective view looking at the upper portion of my devices from the rear as same would appear when detached from the window casing; and Fig. 4 is a corre' sponding rear perspective view of the lower portion of my devices shown detached from the window casing and with the rod portion of the devices shown separated or elevated out of its normal position relative to the remaining devices shown in the figure.

Describing now my invention with particular reference to the drawings and reserving it to the claims to point out the novel features, it will be seen that the devices shown comprise a pair of members adapted to be secured in operative position on each side of the window casing so that the upper ends of the members are in position to support the curtain pole at the desired height, whereas the lower ends are within convenient reach of a person standing on the floor to grasp the side members and elevate and lower or otherwise operate said members from the floor without the use of a step ladder. The side members being identical, a description of one will suffice for both. Thus each in the particular form shown comprises the following devices.

1 is a guide wire or rod connected between two screws, nails or other securing devices 2, one of which is adapted to be secured above and the other below at one side of the window casing with the guide member vertically disposed. The guide member is secured next the window casing with the securing devices projecting so that their heads are separated from the casing by a space.

3 is a rod which may be of wood, metal or other suitable material and may have any desired cross section and which has a length corresponding to the inside distance between the shanks of the securing devices to fit vertically between said devices. This rod has an eye 4 through which the guide member passes, said eye in the particular devices shown being an opening in lug 5 located at the upper end of the rod 011 its rear face. Projecting from the top of the rod are a pair of spring jaws 6 coming together in central position over the top of the rod and there having their free ends flare outwardly so that when the rod is pushed upwardly by a person standing on the floor, the eye of the rod running along the guide member guides the upper end of the rod and causes the flared portion of the spring jaws to receive therein without fail the shank of the upper securing member, which accordingly enters between said jaws, which latter snap together above it and thereby suspend the side member from the upper securing member.

Swinging the side member (permitted by the eye 4) until its lower end is located over the shank of the bottom securin member and is supported thereby, gives all the support necessary to uphold ordinary weight of curtain pole, portiere or curtain. To pre vent side displacement of the lower end of the rod from its supported position over the lower securing member, I provide in the particular devices shown a sleeve 7 having a slot and pin connection 8 with the rod to permit the sleeve to slide beyond the end of the rod. This portion of the sleeve is in turn vertically slotted at opposite points 9 to pass down over the shank of the lower securing member when the sleeve is adjusted into extended or overhanging position below the end of the rod. Each rod at its upper end has a curtain pole supporting bracket 9 across which the pole, 1O extends and is supported.

The advantage of the invention is that it makes it perfectly easy to put up and take down or otherwise adjust curtains and portieres by a person standing on the floor without the use of a step ladder. Thus to take down the curtains it is merely necessary to raise the locking sleeves 7 so that their slots clear the shanks of the lower securing devices, then to move the rods 3 sidewise so they are out of line with said shanks, and finally to pull downwardly on the rods to disengage their spring jaws 6 from the upper securing devices and then to lower the rods until the curtain pole or desired part of the curtain comes within reach. When the rods have been brought into their lower position to get at the upper portions of the curtains or the curtain pole, said pole may be supported in lower position by raising the lower ends of the rods on top of the window ledge or sill, or the rods may be allowed to hang fully suspended by their eye connection with the guide members 1.

The expression casing in the claims refers to window and door casings and the like.

Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In devices of the class described, the combination of projecting members one for each side of a casing, each having a shank to project from said casing; rods having forks at their upper ends receiving said shanks; curtain supporting means on the rods; rod supporting devices comprising a pair of thrust receiving members one for each side of the casing and receiving the down-thrust of the rods when said rods are positioned with their forks receiving the shanks of the projecting members; and means releasably locking the rods to the thrust receiving members.

2. In devices of the class described, the combination of projecting members one for each side of a casing, each having a shank projecting from the casing; rods having forks at their upper ends receiving said shanks; curtain supporting means on said rods; means guiding the upper ends of the rods to guide their forks into engagement with the shanks of the projecting members when the rods are elevated; and rod supporting devices comprising a pair of thrust receiving members, one for each side of the casing and receiving the down-thrust of the rods when they are positioned with their forks receiving the shanks of the projecting members.

3. In devices of the class described, the combination of projecting members, one for each side of a casing, each having a shank projecting from the casing; rods having clips at their upper ends receiving into them the shanks of the projecting members; curtain supporting means on the rods; and rod supporting devices comprising a pair of thrust receiving members one for each side of the casing and receiving the down-thrust of the rods when positioned with their clips engaging the shanks of the projecting members.

4. In devices of the class described, the combination of a pair of rods one for each side of a casing; means guiding the upper ends of said rods between a lowered and an elevated position; curtain supporting means on the rods; shank members, one for each side of the casing, each having its shank prQ jecting from the casing under the lower end of the rod on its side of the casing and supporting said rod; and sleeves, one on each rod slidingly mounted on their lower ends to be adjusted to project below said ends, said sleeves having vertical slots receiving therein said shanks when the sleeves are adjusted into their aforesaid projecting position.
