FRITZ JOI-INSON, OF CHERRELYN, COLORADO.
LIFTINGr-PLIERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1909.
Application filed .Tune 15, 1908. Serial No. 438,472.
To all whom tt may concem:
Be it known that I, FRITZ J oI-rNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cherrelyn, in the county of Arapahoe and State of Golorado, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting-Pliers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form apart of this speoification.
My invention relates to improvements in lifting devices.
In my improved construction, one extremity of the device is provided with two co- Operating jaws adapted to grasp the edge of a cooking utensil, whereby the latter may be lifted. The oppositeextremity of the device may be fashioned in any suitable manner, whereby it is adapted to perform the stovelid-lifting function, though nothing is claimed upon this particular feature in this application.
Having briefly outlined my improved construction I will proceed to describe the same in detail reference being made to the accompanying drawing in'which is illustrated an embodiment thereof.
In this drawing, Figure l is a side elevation of my improved device. Fig. 2 is a view looking in the direction of arrow 2 Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a side elevation showing the device in use for lifting a cooking utensil.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the views.
Let the numeral 5 designate the device considered in its entirety. One eXtremity of the device is fashioned as shown at 6 for lifting stove lids, while the opposite eX- tremity is provided with two jaws 7 and 8. The jaw 8 is forined integral with the body- 9 of the device while the jaw 7 is a part of a lever-like member 10 pivotally connected with the body of the device as shown at 12. The member 10 is provided in the rear of the pivot with a part or arm 13 adapted to be grasped by the hand of the user when it is desired to use the jaw extremity of the device for lifting purposes. This part 13 is formed concave on the surface adjacent the body 9 whereby it is adapted to fit the coil wire cover-ing 14 which is applied to the body part 9 as is usual in articles of this character. This arm 13 is preferably provided with slots or elongated perforations 15 for ventilating purposes. By reason of these perforations, the air is allowed to circulate freely through the part 13, and the convolutions of the wire covering 14 of the device.
Then the device is in use for lifting stove lids, it is employed in the ordinary way. In this event the wire covered part 1.4: together with the arm 13 of the member 10, is grasped by the hand of the user, the lid being lifted in the usual way. Now when it is desired to lift a cooking utensil 16 (see F ig. 3), the part 13 of the member 10 is moved away from the wire covered part whereby the j aw 7 is separated from the aw 8. In this event the jaws are opened and may be applied to the edge of a utensil as 16. The jaw 7 is then closed by grasping the part 13 of the member 10, whereby the utensil is grasped tightly between the two jaws and may be lifted about as desired.
In order to give the device a better hold upon a cooking utensil having a bead or rib 17 around the top thereof, the aw 8 is provided with a transverse recess 18 adapted to receive the said bead. This jaw is also provided with laterally disposed lugs 19 projecting from the opposite sides of the jaw, adjacent the recess 18 and adapted to engage the bead from below (see Fig. 3). This construction gives the jaw such a firm hold of the utensil 16 that the latter may be lifted without the exercise of special care and without the necessity for excessive pressure upon the part 13 of the member 10.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
An improved article of manufacture, consisting of a lifting device having a body member surrounded by a wire coil armor which is largest in the' center and tapers toward both extremties, said member being the armor col of the body member for ven- 10 provided :Lt one extremty With a jaW, and a tlnting purposes, substantally as described. relutively short lever-hke member having a In test-imony Whereof I affix my Signature 'aw at one extremty eoperztting With the in presence of two wtnesses.
:jaw of the body member the leverlke mem- T T ber being concaved in the rear of ts fulcrum FRITZ JOHB SOA' to fit the adjacent Wre armor of the body Ttnessesz member, the concaved portion of the lever- A. J. (TBRIEN,
