Application ttled March 16, 1000. Serial No. 483,802.
'lo all n-lioml 'it muy concern:
tte it. known that we, Geenen C. Rnrrn and (il-:onen l". Fiona, both citizens ot the United States, residing in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improveunnts in Coin-Selectors, of which the t'ollowinlr is a speeitication.
One olijeet ot' our invention is to provide a device which may be attached to any form ot vending or slot machine, whereby impertect coins or tokens or coins of impro )er denominations shall be detected and discharged from the machine, while perfect coins ot the correct denomination .shall be permitted to pass so as to properly aetuate the -vending or other machine with which our said invention is used.
' Ve further desire to provide a machine lapnble ot securing the above end, which shall have its parts so constructed and arranged as to be exceedingly sensitive in its operation: it', being capab e ot' detecting abnormally worn coins as well as dunnnies or washers inserted with fraudulent intent.
These objects and other advantageous ends we secure as hereinafter setfortln'reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figures l and are vertical `longitudinal sections taken at right angles to each other, illustrating the detail construction of our improved coin selector; Figs. 8, 4, and G are respectively transverse vertical sections, taken on the lme 3 3, 4 4, 5 5 and -t I"ig. l; Fig. T, is a fragmentary section illustrating the preferred construction of one of the spring pins; Figs. S to inclusive,
are perspective views illustrating the construction ot certain ot' the detail parts of our invention; Fig. 2l, is a longitudinal vertical section showing in elevation certain of the operating mechanism of -onr invention, and
-l"igs. 22 and 33 are, enlarged sectional elevations illustrating, to some extent diagrammatieally, the manner of operation ot' our machine.
In the above drawings A represents a substantially cylindrical casing containing the mechanism constituting our invention and A is a coin box rigidly connected to and depending from said casing.
It wiil beunderstood thatl the device as a whole may be attached to or inserted in vending or other forms of slot machines and for this purpose its .shape may be moditied as desired, without departing from our invention.
()nc end of the casinllr A is provided with a head a, while trnnsversel placed within it is n partition o against w lich is mounted a coin chute o?. ln the top surface ot the casing is a slot. o comnnmicating with the upper end of the passage a* in theeoinehnte, which extends about two thirds of the distance from the bottom of the casing'.
Mounted within the casing to the rear ot and below the coin chute is a coin guiding structure B having a forked passageway, one branch o of which leads down and forwardly so ns to discharge a worn or s nnious token outside of the machine, while the other branch l/ leads into the coin box A. A valve hereafter described in detail is mounted within the upper portion of the guideway so as to be capable of directing a coin into one or the other of said branches.
lhe'head o is provided with an inwardly extending guide. cylinder ai', containing a plunger 11., a portion of whose body is designed to tit within and be guided by said cylinder` while the remainder carries a spring o?, extending between the tirst and la rgcr portion of the plunger and the rear ot the coin chute u2.
lietween the inside face ot' the head o aml the adjacent end ot' the plunger u." is mounted n plate c having a collar c' projecting through said head so as to be capable ot being engaged by the head of a plunger rod l). Said rod extends into the. plunger o, with which it is yieldingly -onncctcd by menus of a spring J'; there being a set screw carried by the said plunger and extending into an elongated slot in the rod for the purpose of limiting the relative movement ot said plunger and rod.
From Fig. l5. it will be seen that the coin chute o has extending through it a cylindrical chamber or passage into which projects the hollow rear end of the plunger o", as shown in Fig. 1, and in said hollow end is mounted a cylindrical block f: having a spring e' mounted between its t'orward end nml the bottom of the plunger recess. set .screw c: is carried by this block and extends into a slot in the plunger o" so as to limit the relative movement ot' these parts. while a .second set .screw c extends t'rom said block into a centrally placed cavity thercol` in which is mounted a stem j having a head f iu the form ot a flut. plate, there being a spring c" mounted between the forward end of the stem und the bottom of the cavity in which it. is carried.
'lhcl various parts are so designed that in their normal positions, the rear face of the circular plate f" is immediately to the front of the passage u in the coin chute. at the bottom of which isa lip or lug a projecting from the lower rear end of the plunger a so as to catch and |support a coin placed in said chute.
rlo thel rear of the partition a' and rigidly carried therefrom by means` ot' bars y, is a plate Gin which is mounted a forwardly projtmting tubular guide y having a flange y at its front end. The front face of this tlange has a `forwardly projecting and relatively sharp annular abutment y whose diameter is prcferabl though not neces snrily, equal to the tiameter of the most deeply indented part of the coin just within its rim. The exterior surface of this guide is threaded and has mounted on it a nut y whereby its flanged end is maintained at a definite distance in front of the plate G; there being also a nut (/t holding said guide to said plate. In the space between the flange g2 and the nut y is mounted a ring Il so arranged as to be free to turn upon the guide g and having at one side a projecting rod lt carrying a weight It. From its other side extends a second rod h2 carrying a downwardly projecting curved lever It whose end It* is turned inwardly at right angles to the general plane of Said arm.
Within the guide q 1s slidably mounted a. tube I at whose forward end is a head z' provided at its periphery with four or any other suitable number of forward projecting points z", and in this tube there is a longitudinally slidable rod J having a head y' capable of abutting against the surface of the head z' within the circle defined by the points z". The rear end of this rod is threaded for the reception of a nut j and it is noted that the tube z' has in its under side a notch As shown in Fig. f2, the nut j holds to the rod J an arm guided on an extension ot one of the bars g and serving for the attachment of one end of a Spring ja whose other end is connected to the )lute G.
The ring Il has formed in its orward front face a series of cylindrical cavities in which are mounted small plungers normally )ressed outward by means of springs r.
Tormally, said plunger-s, under the action of springs It, extend beyond the face of the ring l-I into the cavities of the flange y/' and this latter is also provided with a number of plungers g, all of which have stems g in the shape of )ins projecting from its forward face. The rear ends o? these stems extend into cavities in the rear face of said head so as to abut upon the forward ends of the plungers It", although Vtheyfa'ro"'pressed forward by springs y?. lei-tainv-- Vot tho plungers are so placed that their stems g all lie in a circle whose diameter is vequal to the diameter of the rinof the coin which the -muchine is designed to properly re,- ceive;-in the present instance, a nickel. Another plunger, in the present instance the lowest, is so placed as to be engaged by the lug or lip e* on the cud of the tintin plunger a".
The front face of the flange g2 within the abutment g is preferably depressed and into this depressed portion extendl four or any desired number of additional plungers t which have the same detail constructions as those shown in Fig. 7, and like them engage the front faces of four plungers also car-Y ried by the ring-H. These latter plungers are the same in construction as those shown in Fig. 7, and like them are capable of being pushed into said ring II by the stems of their abutting plungers of the flange r` so that their forwardends may be Ibrought flush with the front face of the ring. Of the plungers le, two of them extend through openings i in the head z' of the rod I so as to engage the rear face of theheadj of the rod while the other two of said plungers merely abut upon the rear face of Said head From Fig. 2, it will be seen that there is a bar p extending through and guided by the plunger au, the coin chute a and the partition a', so that its forward end abuts upon the rear face of the plate c while its rear end capable of engaging a stud p projecting iiom a plunger lts, Fig. 22;-it heilig noted that said plate c is capable of limited inward movement suflicient to longitudinally move the rod and so press to the rear the said plunger its. This latter when so moved for a sufiicient distance also has its front end brought flush with the front faceA of the rino' II.
I1 rom Fig. 13 it will be noted that the cylindrical block c has a rearwardly projecting and relatively sharp annular edge e of the same diameter as the edge q of the flange r/', and at. the top of said block is a projection c7 which under workingconditions comes into engagement with the end of a pin r/ connected to one of the plungers (f" of the flange g2. This plunger like those hitherto dcscribed, has a rearward extension abutting on a plunger h5 carried by the ring lI and so constructed that under predetermined comlitions it moves said plunger against the aetion of its spring it into a position with its front end flush with the face of said ring ll.
'lhe plate G and the partition a serve as guiding means for a rod a" whose forward end is rigidly connected to the plunger a while its rear end carries a cam Z, as shown in Figs. 2 and (i, This cam extends forwardly so as to engage or be immediately atljtteentto tlte weightetl arm It of the ring ll antl is proritletl with a rear extension l' whieh` with tlte. various parts. in the positions shown in Fig. 2. is tapalile of engaging a weightetl lever In. :intl trippingl the same so as to more itv ottt ot the noteh t"' in the ttihtilar rotl l.
