Description

L B. FIIN AGTYLENR GAS LELMPi APPLGATIoN FILED ma. a1( moa Patented Da. 28, HHM).
LESTER B. KING, 0F SPRINGFIELD. ILLINOIS.
AUETYLBNE-GAS LAMP.
specification o! Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1909.
Application med. December 31, 1908. Serial llo. 470,239.
of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Acetylene Gas Lamps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates more particularly to that type of acetylene as generators, in which t e burner is carrie by the generator, and the rimary object in view is the provision o a small, compact, durable and easily adjusted device that is reliable and economical in operation, and is peculiarly ada ted for the use of miners and others wor ing in dark places.
The plreferred embodiment of the invention isi ustrated in the accompanying drawn J wherein xgure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.
Similar reference letters designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawings.
In the embodiment disclosed, a combined carbid holder and s enerating chamber A is employed, pre erab y circular in cross section, and having an upstanding threaded neck b of less diameter than the holder, said neck being connected to the main bod of the holder by a breast a. Arranged wit in the holder and carried by the bottom thereof, is an upstanding imperforate pipe c that exterds into the neck b and has an open upper en The above described structure constitutes one member of the device, and the other member, designated C, consists of a. liquid reservoir D carr ing a depending cap f, which is threade as shown at g, and detachably screws u n the neck b. This ca terminates in a ared depending flange and interposed between said flange and the breast of the carbid holder, is a packing ring B that. is co by the flange and serves to prevent lea age at the ioint produced between the members. The reservoir D carries a depending pi o G that extends below the cap, and loose y engages within the imperforatc pipe c, terminating short of the lower end thereof, as clearly illustrated in Fig. 2. The upper end of the reservoir has an opening surrounded by an opstanding flange m. The opening is normally closed by a plug n, hinged at one sido to the reservoir by the link connection, illustrated more particularl in Fig. L Arran wit in the depending pipe G is a packing M having a reserve portion that occuilies the lower portion of the reservoir, and as secured to its upper end a cord N that is loosely located within the reservoir, so that it is freely accessible when the closure plugn' is removed from Ythe opening. The sai reservoir and the cap are connected bv a lilter casing from one ride of whic ro}ects a gas eivery i e carr in at its outer end a burner ti) PJ. Surroyuning this burner tip is a, de ector K, which is carried by the ipe I, and also constitutes a protector for t e tip. The inner end of the supply pipe I communicates with the filter casing, and arranged within said casing and surroundin the epending pipe G, is filter material Arran d within the carbid holder at the lower en of the neck, is a diaphragm L surrounding the telescoping pipes, but spaced therefrom to permit the free flow of as.
It will be noted by reference to lgs. 1 and 2 that the reservoir D and the cap G are connected b a reinforcing bracket, and carried by this racket is a hook e that constitutes means for suspending the lamp from a belt or cap.
In using the device, the cap is rstffunscrewed from the carbid holder and carbid is placed in said holder, the cap is then replaced, and the reservoir filled with water. The water passes down the wick and will till the pipe c to overflowing, an the overflow passln down into the holder, will attack the car id and cause a generation of gas. This gas will find its way throu h the filterin material H into the ipe and escape rom the tip J where it. is ignited. The amount of gas generated of course depends upon the amount of water supplied to the carbid, and this can be read ily regulated by tamping some of the before mentioned reserve portion of the packing M in the tube G when it is desired to increase the obstruction in said tube or by drawing the packing M upwardly, through the medium of the string N, when it is desired to lessen thc obstruction in the tube G. To cxtingnish the light, it is only necessary to remove the closure plug n, and pour out. the water from the reservoir. The diaphragm L prevents the iiltering material from .ecoming cakcd, and smd filtering material construction, operation 1n :shapez proportion and l what I prohibits the passage of small particles into the delivery mpe, and thus prevents the same becoming clogged.
From the oregoing, it is thought that the and many advantages of the herein described invention fvlll be alparent to those skilled in the art without urther description, and it will e understood that venous changes in the slze,
minor details of construction, may be resorted to without de artin? from the spirit or sacrificing any o the a vantages of the invention.
Hav'm thus fully described my invention, im as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In an acetylene gas enerating lumi), the combination of a car id holder, a. iq
uid
f material arranged in the tu reservoir arranged above the carbid holder and having an opening and means for ing the same, a tube depending from the bottom of the reservoir for suppl ing the carbid holder with lqui a ieee o packing and havin a reserve portionoccuxying the lower ortion of the reserv01r, an a string attac ed to said reserve rtlon of the piece of packing material an normally contained in the reservoir. In testimon whereof I aix my signature 1n presence o two witnesses.
