E. 0 CHAPMAN, OF LA'CON, IL INOIS;
Letters Patent No. 94,474, dated September 7, 1869.
STOVE-PIPE THIMBLE.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the'same.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, E. O. OHAPMABLOf Lacon, in'
2. stove-pipe thimble, with springs on its inner side, to hold the pipe in the same, substantially in the manner andfor the purpose hereinafter described.
It further consists in the employment of an adjustable cover in the thimble, to-close or leave the same opened when the stove-pipe is removed, arranged to operate substantially as hereinafter set forth.
To enable others skilled in the art to which my in vention appertains to make and use the same, I will now describe its construction and operation.
In the accompanying drawings- A represents a metal, or any other suitable cylinder, provided at its upper edge with the flange b, and on its inner surface with the springs c c, to retain the stove-pipe in place in the cylinder.
D represents a cap or cover, formed with openings, a a, on its surface.
" fig. 1.
The nature of my invention consists in constructing D represents a similar cap, provided with similar openings, and pivoted to the centre of the lower sur face of "the cap D. ,e is a bar or lever, for opening or closing the openings a a in the cap D, when the stove-pipe is removed. p
The springs c c are secured at one end to the cylinder A, and the other end extending out, as seen in By this arrangement, the diameter of the cirole of the springs is less than that of the cylinder, and when the pipe is inserted, it being less than the diameter of the circle of the springs, the springs are pressed against the sides of the pipe, and thereby retain it in position.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The cylinder A, provided with springs 0-0 to retain the stove-pipe in place, substantially in the manner described.
2. A stove-pipe thimble, consisting of cylinder A, spn'ngsc 0, caps D D, and levers c, all combined, ar
ranged, and "operating" substantially in the manner andv for the purpose described. 1
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I aflix my signature, in presence of two witnesses. p E. O. CHAPMAN. Witnesses:
S. J. MCFADDIN, GEO. W. SMITH.
