UNITE STAIES PIENVI- @FFIQFQ WILLIAM W. GIDDENS, OF ADEL, GEORGIA.
PLOW.
To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, WILLIAM lV. GID- nnNs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Adel, in the county of Berrien, State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plows; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to plows, and has for its object to provide an attachment designed to hold the plow steady, and to cause it to travel in a straight line.
The invention consists of a vertically presented cutting blade which is attached to the lower end of the plow stock, behind the shovel, and which blade enters or cuts into the ground, and thus holds the plow steady, and prevents it from dodging obstructions such as weeds, briars, etc. The blade is capable of adjustment to take up wear, and to adapt it to different kinds of plow stocks.
ln the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a plow stock showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is an elevation taken at the opposite side to that of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4; is a plan view of the blade detached. Fig. 5 is a plan view of the bar whereby the blade is attached to the plow stock.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the plow stock consists of spaced bars 11 to which the shovel 12 is bolted or otherwise secured in the usual manner. Between the bars, at the lower ends thereof, is a spacing block 13 which has oppositely presented flanges 111 at its front end fitting the front edge of the bars, on which flanges the back of the shovel fits. The block is secured to the bars 11 by a transverse bolt 15. The plow stock herein described is the common form of plow stock and nothing is claimed with respect thereto.
The attachmentcomprises a vertically presented blade 16 having its lower edge 17 curved and sharpened, and an attaching bar 18 to one side of which the blade is made fast. .The bar 18 is secured to one side of the plow stock by the bolt 15, and has a longitudinal slot 19 in which works a pin 2O projecting laterally from one side of the blade 16 near the front end thereof. Near Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed October 15, 1908.
Patented Dec. 28, 1909.
Serial No. 457,924.
the rear end of the blade is a curved slot 21 through which slot and the slot 19 a bolt 22 passes, on one end of which is screwed a nut 23 for clamping the blade to the bar. By means of this slot Q1, the blade may be set at various angles, and lowered as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, if the cutting edge 17 wears. The attaching bar 18 may be secured to either side of the plow stock, or between the bars 11 upon removing the block 13. The slot 19 enables the blade to be set nearer to or farther from the plow stock to suit the work. The blade keeps the plow in a straight line, and cuts up roots, weeds, or other obstructions.
The attachment herein described can be readily attached to any ordinary plow stock, and it is not necessary to modify the construction of the latter. The changes and adjustments can be quickly and readily made, and the attachment effectually serves the purpose for which it is designed.
To adjust or disconnect the shovel 12 from the plow stock it is necessary for the operator to place his foot against the free end of the bar 18, forcing the same forward in the direction of the plow shovel point, and then turn the plow`stock up and by loosening the bolt connecting the plow shovel, the latter can be removed or adjusted to plow deep or shallow as found desirable.
That is claimed, is :d
The combination with a plow stock, of a bar of uniform width and thickness throughout its length and containing an elongated slot, a bolt passed through the stock and one end or the bar for pivotally connecting the latter to the stock, a blade having a lug projecting from one face of the same near its forward end and slidably engaging in the slot in said bar, the said blade containing near its opposite end a vertically disposed arcuate-shaped slot, and an adjusting bolt engaged through the slots in the blade and bar respectively, to hold the said blade in angular adjustable position with respect t0 the ground.
.In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM 1V. GIDDENS.
