Application filed larch 8, 1909. Serial No. 481,042.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lnnor Pnmmn Currrma, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Deer Lick. in the county of Greene and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new vand useful Im rovements in Excavating-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being bad therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to excavating inuchincs, particularly designed for use on land and commonly known as u steam shovel.
My invention aims to rovide a portable excavating machine for nil kinds of excavating and rehundling of material. The machine can be used for loading cars., for widening cuts or embankmcnts, cutting down grades, cleaning ditches, digging canals,
uilding u railroad embankments, and so on, througi the constantly multiplying variety of uses.
The invention further aims to provide an attachment for on ordinary traction engine such as is used for threshing and contract work. It is o. well known fact thata large number of traction on 'nes are merely used for threshing or fodlfdr shredding five or six weeks in a year, and it is in view of this fact that I intend to utilize a traction englue in connection with my invention for grading streets, ditching, making shallow cuts, and working in confined places where ordinary machines could not be used with any success.
To this end, I have devised a )ortablo machine, wherein positive and re inblu means are employed for manipulating the show] or scoop of the machine as though the some were manually handled, said means hein compactly nrrungrd and within easy room of an operator positioned at a safe location upon the machine.
My invention cmlmdics certain novel dctnils of construction thut will be hereinafter described and thou specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side ch-vution of my machine, Fig. 2 is an cnlnrgcd elevation of u portion of tho mnchiuc portly broken away and partly in section. Fig. ll is a. front elevation of the sumo portly broken away and partly in suction, Fig. 4 is u dcluil scchonul vicw oi u clutch forming purl of the o wrutiug mcclmuimu of the machine,-
- and big. I; is u pluu of the machine as illustrated in Fig. 1.

Assuming that the engine 1 has been placed in operation, the rotary movement will be 1mparted to the shaft 45. When the lever {:5 hi moved to place the clutch member in engagement with the clutch wheel 49, the drum 8? will be rotated to wind the chain or cable 5t thereon and drag the shovel or bucket. (it) into the material to be scooped up or excavated. Simultaneous with this movement. the shore] or bucket can be raised or lowered. This is accomplished by manipulating the lever 78 to shift the bean-i 39 and place the wheels '79 into frictlona enga cment with the clutch wheel 49 and 48.
fter the shovel or bucket has been loaded and raised to clear the cut. or pile from which the material has been removed, the jib or crane is swung to place the shovel or bucket over it than or a car for receivi the contents of said shovel or bucket. ThlS is accomplished by movin the lever 42 to shift the bearing 39 and place the wheel 43 in frictional engagement with either of the clutch wheels 48 or 49, according to the direction in which the jib or crane is to be swan".
I reserve the right to provide the engine 1 with a suitable canopy for )mtectiu the engine and the operating mac ianism o the machine.
While in the drawings forming a art of this a plication, there is illustrated t 1e preflllvtP embodiments of my invention, I would have it undelstood that the details of construction can be varied or changed as to the shape, proportion aiid manner of assemblage without departing from the spirit of the invention.
