This invention relates to paper bag machines and relates especially to mechanism carrier and engaged by suitable delivery mechanism in which the bottoms may be closed and sealed in proper position.

In the illustrative embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings the pre viously formed and pasted bag tube is regularly supplied in severed lengths 116 to the feed plate 5 mounted on the bracket 6 and is fed by the cooperating feed rolls 3, 4 over the sectional guide 8 which is curved to deliver the bag to the opener roll 1 and carrier drum 2. The sectional guide 8 may as indicated be mounted on the bracket 6 and lie in Specification of Letters Ritent.

In this way the rod and connected sectional folder are brought down at the proper time into the position indicated in Fig. 1 so as to engage the bag bottom and form the diamond fold therein, the tuckers 20 and gripper 21 being released at about this time and the bag being carried forward by the carrier drum 2. The bag bottom is in this manner drawn under the folder and beneath the folding roll 72 which may be yieldably mounted at a suitable station adjacent the folder to cooperate with the carrier drumand exert the desired pressure on the bag by being mounted in bearing slots on either side of the frame so that its weight constantly presses the bag bottom downward, a suitable slot 147 being preferably formed in this roll to straddle the midseam of the bag bottom.
The paster 58 upon the paster shaft 59 may be mounted at a succeeding station and may have the desired shape to apply paste to the bag bottom, the indenters 56, 57 being also mounted on this paster so as to indent and crease the bag bottom and form the front flap 117 and the rear flap 118, the bag bottom being at this time clamped and held against the carrier drum by the clips 42. These clips, as indicated in Figs. 3, 4 and (5, may consist of resilient sheet metal secured to the outer ends of the clip arms 142, 143 loosely mounted on the studs 120 in the drum. These clips and arms are oscillated in unison by the connecting clip link 43 pivoted thereto so that the two clips move inward together when the clip roll 11 on the extension 141 of the arm 142 rides up on the stationary cam T 1, this action taking place at substantially the same time that the indenter 57 engages the bag and holds it closely against the drum as indicated in Fig. 1, these clips constituting together with the gripper and carrier tuekers the clamping devices mounted on the carrier to hold the bags thereto. The pastor may be supplied with paste in any desired way from the paste tank 47 in which the paste roll 49 rotates in engagement with a suitable doctor. 48. The paste feeder 58 may be mounted on the ro tating shaft 51 and carry the two similar feeding segments 53 provided with transverse portions 54 to coiiperate with the similar transverse portion 55 on the pastor and supply paste thereto, suitable recesses 52 being also formed in the feeder to accommodatetho indentors 56, 67 on the paster.
A suitable closer is preferably mounted at a succeeding station to close the bag flaps against the bottom and the swinging and oscillating closer (it) may be used for this purpose. This closer which may be m the form of a suitable blade is secured to the closer pivot 148 in the closer arm 64: mounted on the closer shaft 65 in the frame. The lever 149 on the closer pivot 148 carries a suitable roll 61 in engagement with the stationary cam 62, the closer spring (33 connecting the lever 1419 and arm 64 so as to hold the roll and cam in engagement. Asis indicated in Fig.9., the closer shaft 65 is mounted in the frame and may be provided with the torsional spring 105 acting between the frame and the adjustable collar 104: on the shaft, thus tending to normally hold the closer in raised position. The crank 66 on this shaft is pivoted to the link 67 which is also pivoted to the outer end of the cam lever 68 whose lower end 166 is pivoted to the frame. The cam roll 69 on this lever cooperates with the cam 70 on the pastor shaft 59 so as to swing the closer shaft 65 and closer while at the same time the closer is oscillated as described about its pivot 148 so that this closer blade travels quite close to the drum tread and the delivery guide 73 as the closer moves downward. In the position indicated in Fig. 1 thecloser has moved upward engaging the front flap 117 and raising the same further out of contact with the drum so that this front flap is subsequently engaged by the closer roll 74 and forced backward into contact with the bag bottom. At this time the bag bottom has of course been'fed over the delivery guide 73 mounted on the support 83 onthe frame and begins to pass between the closer roll 74 and the cooperating roll'167 which operate to firmly press the pasted parts together and seal the same. At this time the closer (it) moves downward, engaging the rear flap 118 of the bag and throwing it forward into close engagement with the. bag bottom which at about this time is released y the clips and fed forward under the closer roll. As indicated this closer roll may be movably mounted by supporting its pivot 112 in the swinging arms 76 mounted on the shaft. in the frame so as to yieldingly press the bag bottom together to the desired extent. Suitable feeding tapes which may be in the form of spiral springs 213 may extend around the closer roll 74 and delivery roll 77 and another series of feeding tapes 82 may extend around this delivery roll and the roll passing around the'periphery of the delivery drum 79 as indicated. This arrangement serves to hold the pasted bag bottom in sealed position until the paste has set sufficiently to permanently hold the parts to gether in proper position.
The parts are of course suitably mounted in a heavy supporting frame and the rolls and drums are preferably operated in nni= son by suitable gearing. All the drums and rolls engaging the bag are of course operated at substantially the same surface speed. The machine may lm' drivcn from the shaft of the bag,

In bag maclnnes, a carrier, means to and aline the lateral edges of the diamond open and hold in extended position the bottoms of bags engaged by said carrier and a folder moving on an axis substantially parallel to the axis of said carrier to engage and form diamond folds in said extended bag bottoms, said folder having edge flanges to engage and aline the lateral edges of the diamond folds.
34. In bag machines, a carrier to feed forward forming bags, means to open and hold in extended position the bottoms of said bags, a folder and means to move said folder into contact with said extended bag bottoms in a direction substantially transverse to the plane of said extended bag bottoms to form diamond folds therein, said folder ha ving edge flanges to engage and aline the lateral edges of the diamond folds.
