PAPER-BAG MACHINE.
Q iSAQS.
To all whom "it may concern:
.ie it known that I, \VILLIAM LIDDELL, a citizen of the United States, and resident of the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, c ty and State of New York, have made certain new and useful Inventions Relating to Paper-Bag Machines, of which the following is aspet-ification, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. 7
This invention relates to paper bag machines and relates especially to mechanism carrier and engaged by suitable delivery mechanism in which the bottoms may be closed and sealed in proper position.
In the accompanying drawings showing an illustrative embodin'ient of this invention and in which the same reference numeral refers iLUSllTllltll parts in the several figures,
' Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional View.
Fig. 2 is a plan view. Figs. 3 and st. are enlarged partial longitudinal sectional views showing the mechanism in'difiercnt positions. Fig. 5 is an enlarged transverse view showing the deflectors and folders. Fig. 6 is an, enlarged partial transverse section showing the clips and operating mechanism. Fig. 7 is a similar view showing the tuckers and their auxiliary devices. Fig. 8 is an enlarged side view showing parts of thefolder operating mechanism. F ig. 9 is aplan view of the completed bag, parts being broken away.
In the illustrative embodiment of the invention shown in the drawings the pre viously formed and pasted bag tube is regularly supplied in severed lengths 116 to the feed plate 5 mounted on the bracket 6 and is fed by the cooperating feed rolls 3, 4 over the sectional guide 8 which is curved to deliver the bag to the opener roll 1 and carrier drum 2. The sectional guide 8 may as indicated be mounted on the bracket 6 and lie in Specification of Letters Ritent.

suitable grooves or channels in the lower feed roll 3 so as to form in connection therewith a substantially fiat surface with which the upper feed roll cooperates. The leading edges or lips of the bag tube are engaged by the double gripper 30 in the carrier drum and by the gripper 21 in the opener roll, it being understood that any desired number of equally spaced sets of grippers and other clamping devices may be mounted on the carrier drum according to its size, four sets of such mechanism being illustrated in the drawings.
The opening and forming devices arranged at the several stations to cooperate with the carrier are .of course so arranged and operated as-t kcompletc their cycles of operation in the time required forthe carrier to move the distance between two successive sets of clamping devices. The opener roll 1, for instance, is shown as having one fourth the diameter of the carrier and since moving at the same surface speed makes one complete revolution during a quarter rcvolution of the carrier which-is the distance between the corresponding clamping devices of two adjacent sets. The folder roll '72 is half the diameter ofthe opener roll so that it makes two complete revolutions for each quarter turn of the carrier, always being in proper phase therewith so as to bring the .slot 14-7 into engagement with the proper part of the bag.
The gripper 21 may be mounted on the gripper rod 158 in the opener roll and be normally held in closed position by the gripper spring 157 engaging a suitable extension 23 on one end of the gripper rod as indicated in Fig. The gripper arnr 22 may be mounted on the other end of this rod so as to cooperate at the proper time with a suitable gripper cam, such as 153, to rotate the gripper rod and open the gripper for engagement with the upper or rear flap or lip of the bag, and then when. the arm moves out of contact with the cam the gripper is brought down against the roll clamping the bag lip thereto with the desired pressure. 'The further rotation of the roll brings the arm 22 into engagement with the releasing cam, 109, to open the gripper and release the rear flap of. the bag. ,The doubleperiphery of the carrier drum, this red car rying the gripper Ellll'lti 3 roiiperatlng iu a similar way W'li'll suitable cams 110, lbi to open the gripper engage and disengage the Iront llap oi: tne bag, it being understood. of course that the double gri mm 30 e Pl mounted on the ll'liGl drum engage the front. liap on either side of the gripper 21. mounted on the opener roll which may en the bag lip shortly after the double gripper engages.
ine tnckers 20 may he mounted on euro able tucker rods 1152) mounted on the sides of the opener roll and engaged by the tucker springs 25 normally tending to swing the rods and tuchers inward into mgerative position. 'lhe tncher arm 26 is mounted on the tucker rod as indicated and when en gage-i by a suitable stationary pain in the path of the arm such as 187 retracts the tucker and holds it in retracted position so long as the cam engages the arm. Suitable lifters 155 may be rigidly mounted on the lifter rod 166 extending through the opener roll so as to engage the lugs 154- on tucker rods and simultaneously lift the tnekers into their operative position beyond the tread of the opener roll, as indicated in Fig. 3 when the pin or roll 119 on. the extension 18 of one of these lifters is engaged by the stationary cam 19, the tUCliQl'S being at other times normally retracted within or substantially coincident. with the roll tread by the springs 25. The carrier trackers 28 may be mounted in pairs on the carrier drum in a generally similar way, "these tuckers as indicated in 7 being mounted on the tucker rods 3% revolubly supported in bearings 4-6 on the of the drum and being normally withdrawn below or substantially coincident with the drum tread by the tucker springs 36. These springs also have torsional notion on the tucker reds and truckers tending to rotate them into their operative angn ar position. Each pair of tuelzers and rods rotate simultaneously since the cranks 15 on the rods are connected by the diagonally arranged pivoted tucker link 4-1 which swings the tncliers simultane. ously inward. The rods may also he proyided with the lugs 35 engaged by the liftare 38 rigidly mounted on the lifter rod 121 so as to be simultaneously operated when the roll 39 on the extension 37 of one of these lifters engages the stationary cam 40, as indicated in Fig. 1. At such times these lifters elevate the tuekers 28 above ihe drum tread and the tucker arm 29 thereupon coniing into en agement with the "tucker cam 84;
as indicated in Fig. 7 the tuckers are swung inward into engagement with the bottim edge of side fold and when the iiihr roll moves out of engagement with the com 40 the tucker springs 36 draw the tuekers down into firm engagement wish this part sea-4.28
oi the bag bottom, holding it. in firm engagement with the drum as the tuekers 20 also do at this time, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 5, thus materially assisting in the formation or the diamond fold. By lifting the tuekers 2S considerably higher than their final clamping position before they are swung inward they engage the bag more reliably and definitely in spite of any slight lifting oi this portion of the bag fold from the carrier drum. if desired, however, the aliners 1'13 carried by the aliner rods 85 mounted on either side of the drum and normally held in inoperative position by the eliner springs 11 which hold them against the stops 108 and 111 may he swung dowi'lward into momentary with the ttom folds at about the time 'ihe tuehers engage the same by any desired means, such as the cams 843 on the shaft. 59 which engage the aliner arms 87 mounted on the rods so as to swing the aliners down n'aoinentarily until the suckers '28 come into engagement.
As the bag ted forward and the primary transverse crease formed therein by the ereaser 1T2 iii-the roll, its sides rise into engagement with the curved deflectors 10 mounted on a suitable bracket or support 9 and which may he formedas indicated in Fig. 5 so as to engage either side of the advancing bag bottom near the center and defleet the same inward to start the diamond fold. The diamond fold may be completed in any desired manner as by bringing a. suitable folder into engagement with. the bag boitom. plate 11 for this purpose may be moilinted on the folder-rod. 12 by a suitable connector this folder preferably having a piece 13, projecting-flange .151 on either side to en- ,age and guide the sides of the diamond ifold and promote thin-regular flgr'or nationthereof. I may be carried tilrcu h the folder which engagement At; shown in Fig. 5 the deflectors The oseiifating sectional folder may be formed withsmtable apertures large enough to allow thedesired movement of the folder without interference from the defiectors.
The folder and rod 12 may be normally held in lowered position by the spiral s wing 92 shown in Fig. 2 as coiiperating wit the frame and with a suitable lug 91 on the rod, and the arm 93 on this folder rod cooperates with a suitable step 165 ontheframc to limit the downward movement of the-folder so that its lowposition may be suitablyadjnsted by adjusting the osition of the arm 93 on the rod. In. or or to raise this folder at the proper time a'suitable cam 88 may be mounted on the shaft 15' of the opener roll and the eam'jfseg 'nent 9O pivoted about the pill may be'proyided withthe cam follower 89 to cooperate Withthiseam The cam segment 90 esindicatedin Figs:
meshes with the cooperating pinion 91 on the folder shaft so as to raise the folder at the proper time against the action of the spring 92-. In this way the rod and connected sectional folder are brought down at the proper time into the position indicated in Fig. 1 so as to engage the bag bottom and form the diamond fold therein, the tuckers 20 and gripper 21 being released at about this time and the bag being carried forward by the carrier drum 2. The bag bottom is in this manner drawn under the folder and beneath the folding roll 72 which may be yieldably mounted at a suitable station adjacent the folder to cooperate with the carrier drumand exert the desired pressure on the bag by being mounted in bearing slots on either side of the frame so that its weight constantly presses the bag bottom downward, a suitable slot 147 being preferably formed in this roll to straddle the midseam of the bag bottom.
The paster 58 upon the paster shaft 59 may be mounted at a succeeding station and may have the desired shape to apply paste to the bag bottom, the indenters 56, 57 being also mounted on this paster so as to indent and crease the bag bottom and form the front flap 117 and the rear flap 118, the bag bottom being at this time clamped and held against the carrier drum by the clips 42. These clips, as indicated in Figs. 3, 4 and (5, may consist of resilient sheet metal secured to the outer ends of the clip arms 142, 143 loosely mounted on the studs 120 in the drum. These clips and arms are oscillated in unison by the connecting clip link 43 pivoted thereto so that the two clips move inward together when the clip roll 11 on the extension 141 of the arm 142 rides up on the stationary cam T 1, this action taking place at substantially the same time that the indenter 57 engages the bag and holds it closely against the drum as indicated in Fig. 1, these clips constituting together with the gripper and carrier tuekers the clamping devices mounted on the carrier to hold the bags thereto. The pastor may be supplied with paste in any desired way from the paste tank 47 in which the paste roll 49 rotates in engagement with a suitable doctor. 48. The paste feeder 58 may be mounted on the ro tating shaft 51 and carry the two similar feeding segments 53 provided with transverse portions 54 to coiiperate with the similar transverse portion 55 on the pastor and supply paste thereto, suitable recesses 52 being also formed in the feeder to accommodatetho indentors 56, 67 on the paster.
A suitable closer is preferably mounted at a succeeding station to close the bag flaps against the bottom and the swinging and oscillating closer (it) may be used for this purpose. This closer which may be m the form of a suitable blade is secured to the closer pivot 148 in the closer arm 64: mounted on the closer shaft 65 in the frame. The lever 149 on the closer pivot 148 carries a suitable roll 61 in engagement with the stationary cam 62, the closer spring (33 connecting the lever 1419 and arm 64 so as to hold the roll and cam in engagement. Asis indicated in Fig.9., the closer shaft 65 is mounted in the frame and may be provided with the torsional spring 105 acting between the frame and the adjustable collar 104: on the shaft, thus tending to normally hold the closer in raised position. The crank 66 on this shaft is pivoted to the link 67 which is also pivoted to the outer end of the cam lever 68 whose lower end 166 is pivoted to the frame. The cam roll 69 on this lever cooperates with the cam 70 on the pastor shaft 59 so as to swing the closer shaft 65 and closer while at the same time the closer is oscillated as described about its pivot 148 so that this closer blade travels quite close to the drum tread and the delivery guide 73 as the closer moves downward. In the position indicated in Fig. 1 thecloser has moved upward engaging the front flap 117 and raising the same further out of contact with the drum so that this front flap is subsequently engaged by the closer roll 74 and forced backward into contact with the bag bottom. At this time the bag bottom has of course been'fed over the delivery guide 73 mounted on the support 83 onthe frame and begins to pass between the closer roll 74 and the cooperating roll'167 which operate to firmly press the pasted parts together and seal the same. At this time the closer (it) moves downward, engaging the rear flap 118 of the bag and throwing it forward into close engagement with the. bag bottom which at about this time is released y the clips and fed forward under the closer roll. As indicated this closer roll may be movably mounted by supporting its pivot 112 in the swinging arms 76 mounted on the shaft. in the frame so as to yieldingly press the bag bottom together to the desired extent. Suitable feeding tapes which may be in the form of spiral springs 213 may extend around the closer roll 74 and delivery roll 77 and another series of feeding tapes 82 may extend around this delivery roll and the roll passing around the'periphery of the delivery drum 79 as indicated. This arrangement serves to hold the pasted bag bottom in sealed position until the paste has set sufficiently to permanently hold the parts to gether in proper position.
The parts are of course suitably mounted in a heavy supporting frame and the rolls and drums are preferably operated in nni= son by suitable gearing. All the drums and rolls engaging the bag are of course operated at substantially the same surface speed. The machine may lm' drivcn from the shaft of the bag,
Ail-
t; 177 which also secured on the shaft 176' as indicated in Fig. A meshes with 2 similar gear 101 above it which is in mesh with the main gear 98 to drive these rolls, The delivery drum 79 may be 0 aerated by the ear 103 on the shaft 81 of t is drum whic as,
indicated in Fig. 2 meshes with the intermediate gear102 which is in engagement with the inning gear: 98. The paste-feeding devlces may be operated in any desired Way as by providing the feeder 58 with the .ear
"1Z8 en aging the poster gear 100, the s aft 50 it e paste roll 49 carrying the gear 179 "in niesn with this'geer 178, as indicated in Fig.
