Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, DONALD M. ConsoN and GEORGE T. GiLnnnsoN, both citizens of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Detachable Swivels, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to a detachable swivel connection for punching bag supporting ropes, and the main object thereof is to provide a novel device consisting of a plurality of parts, whereby the rope swiveled thereto may be instantly detached therefrom.
By means of our improved swivel the broken rope may be instantly detached therefrom and replaced in the minimum space of time.
In the accomplishment of the above objects we preferably form our improved swivel of a plurality of parts consisting of a rigid member provided with spring engaging slots and a removable member having a swivel secured thereto provided with locking springs adapted to engage the slots in the rigid member and lock the two members in detachable relation to each other.
In the drawings forming a part of the specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation of our improved swivel having a punching bag attached thereto, parts ofthe swivel being broken away for clearness of illustration. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section through the swivel. Fig. 3 is a side elevation partly in section of another' form of swivel. Fig. 4; is a detail section of the form of swivel shown in Fig. 3 with the members drawn apart.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 5 designates a stationary support, such as a ceiling to which our improved swivel is adapted to be attached. The swivel preferably consists of a cylindrical stationary member 6 provided at the top thereof with an annular iange 7 provided with a plurality of apertures S, through which the screws 9 are adapted to pass and secure the stationary member rigidly to the support. Member 6 is provided in the walls thereof with two oppositely disposed slots 10 which are adapted to be engaged by spring locking tongues 11, the ends of which are rigidly secured to the upper end of the detachable member 12 of the swivel The exterior diameter of this member is slightly smaller than the interior diameter of member G into which it is adapted to chamber. Spring locking tongues 11 are adapted to enter the slots 10 when the member 12 is forced in place, the member 12 having oppositely disposed apertures 13 to permit of the free and unrestricted inward movement of the horizontally disposed ends of the tongues. Member 12 is provided in the ends thereof with a spherical apertured seat 1i, a semispherical cup-shaped member 15 which comprises the swivel proper adapted to nest therein. The edge of aperture 1i is rounded so that when the rope contacts against it, it will not be injured by cutting. Swivel member 15 is also provided with an aperture 16 through which the rope 17 which supports the punching bag passes, the upper end of the rope being tied in the form of a knot 1S which is adapted to rest in the member 15. v
In Fig. 3 of the drawings we have illustrated another form of swivel attachment which preferably consists of a cylindrical member 20 provided with an annular 'Harige 21 on its upper' edge and adapted for rigid attachment to a support Cylindrical member 2O is provided with oppositely disposed apertures 22 in the wall thereof through which an operators linger may be passed to detach the swivel as will be more fully described hereinafter. Attached to member 20 by bolts or rivets 23 and nesting' therein is a cylindrical member 24 which is provided with an annular out away portion 25 which forms with the inner face of the wall 20, an annular recess 26 which is adapted to receive the upper cylindrical end 2T of a detachable member 28. The bottom of recess 26 is provided with an annular gasket 26 preferably formed of rubber or other pliable material that will eliminate all sounds occasioned by the striking of the two members when the bag is in use. Member 24 is also provided with oppositely disposed slots 29 which register with the slots 22 formed in the outer shell of member 20. Member 2O is also provided with oppositely disposed apertures 30, through which locking dogs 31 which are secured to the lower end of the locking spring 32 are adapted to pass and thus securely hold member 2S in rigid engagement with member 20. The springs 32 are heldin rigid engagement with member 20 by the bolts 23. As in the preferred form, member 9.8 is provided with a semispherical cup shaped member 33 which is adapted to swivel the rope.
Vhen an operator is usingthe punching bag` and accidentally breaks the rope attached thereto, a simple linger pressure on the locking tongues will instantly disengage the detachable member and allow him to replace the rope with a new one7 the whole operation consuming lit-tle time.
It will be observed from the foregoing' description that we have provided a useful device, whereby the swivel member may be detached therefrom or secured thereto with little or no inconvenience.
Havingdescribed our invent-ion what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a device of the class described, a stationary cylindrical member provided with a plurality of oppositely disposed lock engaging slots7 a movable cylindrical member provided with an aperture in the lower end thereof, a pair of spring locking dogs secured to the movable member, said dogs adapted to engage the slots formed in the stationary member when the two members are forced together, and an apertured swivel member mounted in the movable member.
2. In a device of the class described, a stationary cylindrical member provided with slots, a movable member provided with spring dogs, said dogs adapted to engage the slots formed in the stationary member when the movable member is forced into engagement with the stationary member, and an apertured swivel mounted in the movable member.
