FREY A. IDAHLIN, OF CHICAGO, AND EMIL CARLSON, OF WAUKEGAN, ILLINOIS.
GAR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 14, 1909.
Application filed January 30, 1909. Serial N 0. 475,271.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, F REY A. DAHLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and EMIL CARLsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at WVaukegan, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cars, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention relates to passenger cars, and particularly to cars for pleasure railways or amusement devices.
The object of our invention is to provide an improved car particularly adapted for use on elevated or suspension railways, said car having side entrances, closures for said entrances and means under the control of the motorman or operator for operating said closures.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
Our invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1, is a plan view of a car embodying our invention in its preferred form, and Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates the body of the car which is preferably in the form of an open boat, and for obvious reasons is preferably made of sheet metal. The car is provided with a series of transversely arranged seats 2, reaching from side to side thereof and disposed one behind the other. The sides 3 of the car are provided with openings at in front of each seat and upon each side of the car, which constitute entrances or exits.
The rear end of the car is divided off by a partition 5 forming a compartment (3 for the operator of the car who when the car is propelled by electricity is the motorman, and a seat 7 is provided in the compartment for his accommodation.
8 indicates the electric controller. By arranging the motormans compartment at the end of the car he may have general supervision of the same and be able to guard against accidents by giving the occupants of the car proper warning.
Extending entirely around the ear is a wale 9, which is preferably on a level with the bottom of the openings 4 in which case it may serve as a step in entering or leaving the car. The wale 9 is provided with a groove 10 in its upper face for a purpose which will be described hereinafter. The upper edges of the walls 3 are providedwith lateral extensions 11 overhanging the wales 9 and provided with a groove 12 in the under face. The extensions are preferably formed by bending the upper edge of the wall outwardly and then downwardly a short distance as illustrated in the drawing.
13 indicates closures for the openings 4. These are mounted with their upper and lower edges in the grooves 12 and 10 respectively and slide longitudinally in said groove to open and close the openings. The closures upon each side are operated simultaneously from the motormans compartment by cable 14:. The cable passes around a wheel or pulley 15 mounted upon the side of the car upon a shaft 16. The shaft 16 is provided with bearings 17 and upon its inner end is a crank or operating handle 18 within convenient reach of the motorman. The cable passes downwardly to a pulley 19, the circumference of which preferably passes below the bottom of the wale, and then forwardly beneath the Wale to a similar pulley 20 mounted in brackets 21 on the wale at the forward end of the car or in front of the forward opening 4. After passing around the pulley 20 the cable passes rearwardly through the groove 10 to a pulley 21 adjacent to the pulley 19 and then upwardly to the pulley 15. The closures 13 are each secured to the cable 14: so that by turning the handle 18 the doors may be opened or closed simultaneously. The cable may be continuous as indicated at the forward end of the car in Fig. 2 or may be connected at one end to the front edge of the front door or closure and the other end to the rear edge of the rear door or closure, in which case short intermediate cables 22 connect the adjacent edges of the several doors as indicated at the rear end of the car in Fig. 2. The wall 3 at the forward side of the front opening 4 is bent outwardly forming a flange 23 which constitutes a stop to limit the movement of the door when being closed.
2424 indicates suspension members for the car when the same is to be used upon a suspension railway.
Having described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a car of the character described, the
,sides' of the car to which the doors on the sides are secured, and hand wheels in the motormans compartment for operating each of the cables.
2. In a car of the character described, the combination with a sheet metal body having entrances in its side, of a channel bar secured entirely around the car body and registering with the lower ends of said entrances, sliding doors to close said entrances, endless cables at both sides of the car mountcured to the cables at their sides of ed in said channel bars, hand wheels in the car to move said cables, and the series of sliding doors at both sides of the car sethe car, so as to permit the simultaneous operation of either series of doors by the operation of the hand Wheels.
In testimony whereof we have signed our names to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
