JAMES T. GANTT, OF MACON, GEORGIA.

T 0 all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES T. GANTT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Macon, in the county of Bibb and State of Georgia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in plows.
Heretofore it has been common to use a stockand applied thereto a cultivating implement specially constructed therefor. In the present invention I employ an improved form of stock or boot to which may be readily attached various forms of cult-ivat ing implements such as are usually carried in stock by manufacturers.
In addition to the common turn plow there are special makes of plows made by difierent manufacturers to which the ordinary cheap cast point cannot be fitted as these manufacturers have made their construction and shape such that only points manufactured by them and sold at an increased price will fit their respective plows.
One of the important objects of this invention is to place in the hands of the farmer a universal beam to which may be applied by means of the improved boot attachment an ordinary cast plow which may be removed and any other form of plow substituted. a
Another import-ant feature of the invention is the provision of a cutting edge on the mold board.
As is well known points wear out more readily than the mold board, and as it is desirable to have a cutting edge 011 the moldboard in addition to having one on the point I provide a mold-board with a cutting edge and have it act as a continuation of a cutting edge on the point instead of all the cutting edge on the point as is now commonly practiced. In some special constructions where the cutting edge of the point extends up alongside of the mold-board the points are not made interchangeable with the ordinary point, but being attachable only to special makes, these points being sold at an advanced price, the farmer is compelled to purchase all points for these special makes Specification of Letters Patent.

of plow from their respective manufacturers. With my construction and arrange ment of an improved boot a cutting edge carried by the mold-board is adapted to act as a continuation of the cutting edge carried by the point, and when the point wears out an ordinary cast point such as is used on ordinary turn plows can be purchased and applied to the boot, the construction of the same being such that the ordinary point fits perfectly and a continuous cutting edge is thus provided.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of the specification: Figure l is a perspective view of the embodiment of the invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary slightly enlarged sectional View of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the mold board embodying certain features of the invention. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the plow point and share combined embodying certain features of the invention. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the landside. Fig. 6 is a detail fragmentary front view at the lower end of the plow beam showing in connection therewith a spacing member. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of a boot embodying certain features of the invention, and Fig. 8 is a side elevation of the boot shown in Fig. 7 but looking from the opposite side.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 1 indicates a pair of handles of any desired kind which are bolted or otherwise firmly secured to a bar and spacing member 2 which extends between the bars 8 and 4 of which beam 5 is formed. Bar 2 is bolted to beam 5 at 6 and handles 1 connected with beam 5 by bars 7 for bracing the handles. The bars 3 and 4 are held in contact, or almost in contact, as may be desired, at the front end, and are curved at the rear for presenting the ordinary shape of a beam, but in the rear are spaced apart by spacing members 2, S and 9. The spacing member 8 carries a bolt which passes through one end of the braces T for holding the same in connection with beam 5. Spacing member 9 is preferably riveted in position and is formed with lugs 10 and 11 that rest against the under surface of the rear end of beam 5 for bracing any tool or member connected with the lower end of the beam. The spacing member 9 is formed with apertures 9 and 10, aperture 10 accommodating the rivet which holds the spacing member in position, and aperture 9 being adapt-- ed to accommodate the bolt passing through aperture 22 of the landside 21. Upon each side of spacing member 9 and in alinement with aperture 9 are apertures in bars 3 and 4 of beam 5 so as to permit the bolt passing through aperture 22 to entirely pass through the landside 21, boot l2, spacing member 9 and bars 3 and 4.
A boot 12 of special construction is secured to the forward face of beam 5 and spacing member 9 by bolt 13. Bolt 12, more clearly shown in Figs. 7 and S, is formed with a curved surface 14 which is adapted to receive or have placed thereagainst the point 15 which is firmly secured by having a bolt passing through aperture 16 therein, and through aperture 17 in boot 12. The curved surface 14 is designed to receive one end of the mold board 18 which is secured to the boot 12 by having a bolt pass through aperture 19 in the mold-board and aperture 20 in the boot. This will form a complete plow when the landside 21 is secured to the rearwardly extending flange 27 of the boot 12 by having a bolt pass through the aperture 22 in the landside, aperture 23 in the rearwardly extending flange 27 and also through spacing block 9 as well as bars 3 and 4. The boot 12 is secured to beam 5 as heretofore set forth by having bolt 13 pass through aperture 24 and between bars 3 and 4 and clamped. in position by a suitable nut. By this construction and arrangenient of boot the parts of the plow may be removed and new ones substituted with coinparative little inconvenience and with but little cost. In forming the boot 12 the same is formed with flanges 25 and 26 which are designed to straddle the bars 3 and 4 making up beam 5, which will prevent any twisting or turning of the boot when the plow has been thoroughly clamped in position. The boot 12 is also formed with a rearwardly extending flange 27 for accommodating and thoroughly bracing landside 21, the flange 27 extending upwardly and connecting with flange 26.
In the construction of point 15 the same is preferably formed with a cutting edge 28 which extends from the extreme end of the point to the top and is arranged to register with the cutting edge 29 formed on the mold board 18. The cutting edge 28 is provided with a rearwardly extending flange 30 which is adapted to engage the beveled edge 31 of the landside 21. The cutting edge 29 projects slightly beyond the front face of the boot 12 and forms a continuation of the cutting edge 28. In forming the point, the mold-board and landside, cast parts are arranged to be accommodated or used interchangeably such interchangeable parts being taken from ordinary stock material such as is in ordinary commercial use. This will obviate the necessity of sending to the factory for special parts.
The present structure is of advantage in that when the point is worn out a new point may be provided at comparatively small cost and little inconvenience, and when a new one has been supplied the plow is ready for use.
