Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 25, 1908.
Patented-Dec. V, 1909.
Serial No. 64,354.
.Qfo all whom may concern:
it known that 1', HARRY CRUTCHLEY, a citizen of the United. States, residing in Jersey City, in the county of frludson and State of .licw Jersey, have invented certain new and useful imprrwements in Type- T'Jiritiin;- iviachines. of which the following is a ope a .1.
This invention relates to the mechanism for vibrating the ribbon to cover and uncover the printing point at each type stroke.
The principal object oi. the invention is to provide simple and eli'ective means which may be readily applied to existing typewriting machines, for causing the ribbon at will to remain stationary below the printing point. at the type strokes, to enable stencils to be written.
in. carrying out the invention, l employ a rockenarm, which in operated by another arm that vibrates at the key strokes in the well known Underwood machine, to which my invention is shown as applied. The rocker-arm has a pin-and-slot connection with a ribbon-vibrating lever. Said rockerarm is disconncctiblo from said vibrating arm at the will oi. the operator, so that the ribbon will remain below the printing point at the type strokes. This disconnection is ell'ccted by the expedientof providing said rocker-arm with an axially movable wrist. Normally the wristlics in a alot in said constantly vibrating arm. but by turning a linger-picce the operator can withdraw said wrist, so that vibrations are no longer comn'iunicatcd thereby to said rocker arm, and hence the ribbon is not vibrated.
@ther features and advantages will hereinatter appear.
In the armom mnyiug drawings. .l*i; uro 1 is a front perspective ricw ot' the universal bar mechanism and rililunrvibrator of an Umlerwood front, strike writing machine. showing my imprm'emcnts applied thereto; the part3 being shown in normal positions and the ribbon connected up to vibrate at each type stroke. Fig. is a view of said parts seen at Fig. l. but showing the ribbon discomicctcd, no that it will not vibrate at the type strokes. Fig. 3 a sectional cnd elevation, showing the parts in normal positions. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 3, but showing the ribbon carrier vibrated up to cause the ribbon to cover the printing point at the type stroke. Fig. I) is a View similar to Fig. 3, but showing the ribbon (lisconnected, and the constantly vibrating arm as having been elevated without affecting the ribbon.
"lype-lmrs 1 strike through a ribbon 2 on the front side of a platen 3. Heels 4 on the type-bars press rearwardly a curved universal bar 5, which is fixed upon a frame 6 carried upon a rocking frame 7, which includes a shaft wardly and forwardly inclined arm 9 having a longitudinal slot 10; .said arm 3') vibrating up and down at the type strokes.
in engagement with the slot 10 is a wrist 11. which projects through a bc'aring 12 in a. rocker arm l3. the latter mounted upon a shaft l-l extending across the machine and supported in bearings; 15. it will be understood that vibratimis oi the arm 9 are communicated lo the arm 13. Upon the latter is fixed an upright extension 16 having at its upper end a vertical slot 17 to engage a pin 18 provided upon an arm 19 of a bellcrauk lever 20, to which is attached a vertial nlidinp; member 21 carrying the ribbon 2. As the rocker arm 13, 16 swings forwardly and lmckwardly. the ribbon lever 20 Fixed upon said shaft is a downis swung up and down, so that the ribbon is carried up to cover the printing point when the type strikes. and is then dropped to disclose the writing.
The wrist 11 is adapted to be withdrawn from the slot .10, being for this purpose mounted for axial movement through the bearing l2 in the rocker-arm 1 The wrist itself is fixed to a carrier :52. which is in the form of an arm similar to 13-3 and having a ho or hcad :323 in which Silltl wrist is fixed. This carrier 22 in mounted to turn upon the shall 14- lo m-rommodalo the rocking oi. the arm 1 and it is also movable along said shaft lo withdraw the wrist '11 from the slot 10. For [his purpose, the carrier 39 is fixed upon a long hub or tubular shaft 24, which can slide along the shaft or rod 1.4. Such sliding; movement is etlectcd by a Shifter arm 25 fixed upon and depending from the rock shaft 26 and having at its lower end a. pin 27 to work between forks :28 projecting up from lhc hollow shaft 24; this connection being sullicicntly loose to permit the shaft ll-lo rock at the type Strokes, and also to permit the shifter arm 25 to slide said shaft 24 to and fro along the rod 14. Said rock shaft 26 extends horizontally forward through the front vertical plate or wall 29 an index 82, and a plate 33 is fixed to the front wall 2!) and provided with marks designated as and It.
When it is desired to stop the ribbon from vibrating during the type strokes, the fin erpiece 31 is pressed-to the left from the ig. 1 osition, so that the index 32 will registerwith the letter S, which stands for stencil. Such movement shifts the arm 25 to the right, and thereby slides the wrist carrier 24, 22 in the same "direction, and withdraws the wrist 11 from the slide 10, as at Fig. 2. When it is desired to restore the activity of the ribbon, the finger-piece 3.1 is pressed toward the right, so that the index 32 registers with the letter R, meaning ribbon, when the parts are turned to the Fig. 1 position. A detent-spring 34: engages notches 35, 36 in a collar 37 fixed upon the rock-shaft 26, so as to hold the parts in either Fig. 1 or Fig. 2 position.
The platen 3 is carried upon a frame having a roll 38 to run upon a rail 39, which can be shifted up and down, to cause difi'erent types to print; and the ribbon lever 20 is ivoted upon a bracket 40 fixed to said rail; the slot- 17 accommodating the up and down shift movements of the rail and the lever arm 19.
