Be it known that I, JoI-IN FLINDALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago. in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot and Leg Rests; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in furniture, and particularly to an improved foot and leg rest formed so as to be readily accessible and when not desired can be stowed away out of sight, and has for an object the arrangement of a slide and stop whereby the foot and leg rest is supported when in an extended position and is guided to its proper resting place when it is stowed away.

A further object of the invention is the construction of a foot and leg rest in combi nation with an article of furniture having slide ways formed therein and means connecting the foot and leg rest proper with the article of furniture so that the foot and leg rest will be supported at a predetermined angle when extended and firmly held in that position by supporting lugs and sliding arms engaging a stop arranged on the article of furniture, the stop and the lugs permitting a retracting of the rest whenever desired.

With these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel constructions, combinations and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully de scribed and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section through a chair and foot and leg rest embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a section through the chair shown in Fig. l but with the foot and leg rest retracted. Fig. 8 is a section through Fig. 1 approximately on line 33, the cover to the foot and leg rest being removed for the purpose of illustration.

In the provision of foot and leg rests for furniture of various kinds, as for instance chairs, it is very desirable to provide a simple and yet strong construction. Also it is very desirable to arrange the foot and leg rest to be readily moved out of the way as for instance beneath the chair seat when not in use.

In constructing a foot and leg rest in combination with a chair. the same is arranged with any desired kind of rest proper and a sliding support to which the same is pivotally secured. The shielding support is arranged to slide in ways secured to the chair to which the rest is to be attached in order that the foot and leg rest proper together with its support, may be slid beneath the seat of the chair and there held until further required. In order that the foot and leg rest proper that is pivotally mounted upon the sliding support will not be pivotally mounted to an undesirable angle a lug or plurality of lugs as may be desired is con nected therewith and arranged to engage one of the cross bars of the chair for limiting the movement of the foot rest proper and thereby holding the foot and leg rest proper at a proper angle.

In order that the invention may be more clearly understood an embodiment of the same is shown in the accompanying drawings in which i 1 indicates a chair which may be of any desired kind to which is secured a pair of runways or supports 2 and 3. To the supports 2 and 3 are secured guides at and 5 for guiding the reciprocatory movement of the sliding supports 6 and 7 which are designed to rest upon the slides 2 and 3 and be held from moving toward each other by the guides 4t and 5. The sliding supports 6 and 7 are pivotally mounted at 8 and 9 to a foot and leg rest 10. The sliding supports 6 and 7 are also provided with lugs or projections 11 and 12 which engage slots 13 and 1-1- in a cross bar or stop 15 for limiting the outward movement of the supports and for consequently limiting the outward movement of the foot rest proper. As will be further seen in Fig. 3 the sliding supports 6 and 7 are pivotally mounted interiorly of the framework of the foot rest proper 10 and are arranged to engage guides 4: and 5 on the outer surface thereof so that as the slides move back and forth the same are held properly in position at all times, and the lugs 11 and 12 thereof will readily engage the slots 18 and 14. As the foot rest proper 10 is pivotally mounted upon supports 8 and 9, means are necessary for regulating the angle at which the same is used, and in order to'supply such means lugs or

16 and 17 are secured to the framework of the foot rest proper that is arranged to engage one of the cross bars 18 of chair 1 and limit the upward movement of the inner end of the foot and leg rest proper. The foot rest proper is preferably pivoted nearer the inner end than the outer end in order that the same will automatically move to the position shown in Fig. 1 ready for use immediately upon the same being withdrawn from beneath the chair shown in Fig. 2.

The outer end of the foot and leg rest 10 is formed with an enlarged end piece 20 that may be formed of any desired material, and either covered or not as may be desired. The end piece 20 is arranged in this manner in order to tornra stop for the inward movement gl the foot rest proper and also to hide from View the various mechanism employed and to present a neat and pleasing appearance. is desired to use the foot and leg rest a reverse procedure is employed, namely, the pulling out of the toot and leg rest proper 10 until the lugs or projections 11 and 12 pass into the

Vhen it The foot and leg rest has been described specifically in connection with a chair, but it will be evident that the same may be applied to couches, lounges, and any other desired piece of furniture wherever a foot and leg rest is desirable.

What I claim is:

In an article of furniture, a support, a plurality of runways, a sliding support mounted on each of the runways, a rectangular stop arranged at the rear end of each or" the sliding supports, a cross bar secured to each of the runways and formed with slot for accommodating the stops, the construction of the stops causing the cross bar to be locked against lateral movement and against removal 'from the support, a pivotally mounted foot and leg rest connected with the outer end of the sliding support, and angular lugs rigidly secured to the inner edge of the foot rest and leg rest and arranged to engage the support,.the angularity of the lugs determining the angle of the foot and leg rest when moved to supporting position.
