Specification of Letters IPatent.
Patented Dec. "2', 1999.
Application filed. June 15, 1909. Serial No. 502,214.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALVIN G. NEAL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Manhat tan, in the county and State of'New York, have invented a new and Improved Drill- Guide, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an improved device to be used to guide a drill in the twyer of a blast furnace when it is desired to remove the crusts or slag which have formed over the opening of the twyer.
The object of this invention is to provide a device which will be simple in construction, easily adjusted, inexpensive to manufacture, and at the same time strong and durable. This and other objects, together with the construction and the combination of parts will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section through the bosh of a furnace, taken at one of the twyers; Fig. 2 is an enlarged, vertical section showing the details of the drill guide; Fig. 3 is a vertical end view of the cap; and Fig. 4L is a vertical end view of the drill support, the other parts being removed.
Referring more particularly to the separate parts of the device, 1 and 2 indicate the walls of a blast furnace which form a water-j acket between them.
3 indicates the cylindrical pipe which forms a twyer opening in the water-j acket.
Connected to the wall 2 in any suitable manner and juxtaposed to the twyer opening there is provided a twyer a which may be of any suitable form and has a branch pipe 5 connected thereto, from which it receives its supply of compressed air. The outer end of the twyer 1 is preferably open and flanged as at 6. A cap 7 is provided to close the opening in the twyer 1 and has a flange 8 thereon which runs substantially parallel to the body of the cap 7 and is adapted to engage the flange 6 to hold the cap securely to the end of the twyer. The cap 7 has a drill rod guide opening 9 which is preferably located centrally of the cap and also substantially in the line with an opening 10 in a drill rod support 11. Both the cap 7 and the support 11 have a plurality of smaller openings through which are inserted suitable connecting rods 12 which are preferably screw threaded on their ends and are adapted to be adjustably secured to the cap 7 and the support 11 by means of suitable nuts 13 and 1 1. These nuts 13 and 1a engage the support 11 and the cap 7 from opposite sides, so as to prevent longitudinal motion in either direction. The support 11 also has a plurality of large openings 15 which permit the blast air from the supply pipe 5 to pass through into the interior of the furnace.
The drill rod, which is indicated by the numeral 16, may be of any suitable form and is inserted in the alined openings 9 and 10 and thus supported by the cap 7 and the support 11, whereby it may be conveniently operated to remove any incrustation formed over the twyer opening.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination, with a twyer, of a cap, a drill support, and connecting rods between said cap and said drill support.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination, with a twyer, of a cap having an opening therein, of a support having an opening therein substantially in a line with the opening in said. cap, and a plurality of connecting rods secured to said cap and said support. 3. In a device of the class described, the combination, with a twyer, of a cap having an opening therein, of a perforated support having an opening therein substantially in alinement with the opening in said cap, and a plurality of connecting rods secured to said cap and said support.
4c. A drill guide comprising a cap having an opening therein, of a support having a plurality of openings therein, one of which extends in substantial alinement with the opening in said cap, and connecting rods securing said support to said cap.
5. A drill guide comprising a cap having an opening therein, a support having a plurality of openings therein, one of which extends in substantial alinement with the opening in said cap, and connecting rods adjustably securing said support to said cap.
(5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a twyer having a flange on the end thereof, of a cap having an opening therein, a flange on said cap adapted to engage the flange in said tWyer, a perforated drill support having a plurality of openings therein, one of Which corresponds to the opening in said cap, and a plurality of connecting rods adjustably secured to said guide and said support.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to th1s speclfieatlon 1n the presence of 10 two subscribmg itnesses.
