Application filed January llnnrzqnr, e residing at lncounty of Marion and invented certain new in i'rlarm i ippara- 'lhe obj ct oi? my invention is to produce an apparatus capable of being installed in a factory, or a simila place, and by means of villi .l renliated portions of the factory may be equipped with thermostats in a closed circuit in such manner that, it an accidental break occurs at any point in the system, a notification will be delivered to headquarters indicating an accidental break, and at the local station giving an ii'idication of the par ticular dili'erei tiated portion of the system wherein the break has occurred; and also oi such character that, upon occurrence of a an easily distinguishable notification iven to central indicating a lire as ,i' ..ned from an accidental break in the system, and an indication will be given at the local station indicating the exact portion of the system wherein the tire has oc curred.
The accom anying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure l is a front elevation of the local station apparatus with the indicator face omitted; Fig. 2 a section on line 22 or" Fi l' Fi 3 a section on line 3 of Fig. l' 7 TY 7 and rig. i a diagram ot the wiring tor a seven storv and basement structure.
in the drawings, 10 indicates suitable spring-motor of a ordinary tire alarm apparatus having a spindle 11 carrying a contact wheel 121 rovided with a series of fingers 15 adapted to cotiperate vith one of a pair of contacting stationary terminals it and let in such manner to send to central station, such. a fire headquarters, an alarm, the possible movement of the motor being sullicient to cause several successive complete rotations of the shaft 11 and then coming to a full stop when the finger 15 of the main shaft 16 comes into engagement with a lined stop 17. T he motor comprises a pallet wheel 18 engaged by a pallet 19 which, in urn, carries a vibrating linger 21 adapted to e engaged by a finger in such way as to prevent movement of motor. to a pair of fingers Ql anc Finger Q l is carried by the ari'nature 26 of an electroinagnet and linger is similarly carried by the armature of an elcct omagnet 29, the said. armatures being nor a ny from their magnets ly light sprn cs 31, so that said springs normally tend to retract linger from linger )i l: 12 carries a lingerll, in the path of movement of which arranged one arm of a stop lever l2 pivoted at on the frame of the motor and held against movement in one direction by a pin Arranged in the path of movement of the opposite end of lever l2, induced by engagement of linger ll vith said lever, a linger 3 carried by the armature lG or an electromagnet ll.
The motor 10 comprises a dr'ven shaft 51 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1) upon which sleeved an indicator linger 52, the engagement between said indicator linger and shaft 51 bein sutlicient to cause the in dicator 52 to move with the shaft so long as increment of said. indicator is unobstructed but permitting independent further movement of shaft 51 it any obstruction is brought into the path of movement of the indicator linger. The indicator linger 52 carries a metallic arm which carries metallic brushes Ill and 55 which are grounded on the frame of the motor and which are adapted to traverse and engage two series of terminal pins 56 and 57 arranged concentric with the axis oi? shaft 51. Also ar ranged concentric with the XlS of shaft 51 is a series of electromagne M, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H, corresponding in number to the subdivisions or floors A, ll, C, D, E, F, 'l l the system to be irotected.
u ant. i Each 01 the aforesaid magnets is provided with an armature 58 which carries a linger 59 projectable into the path of movement of the indicator linger so that, wheneve" anyone of the aforesaid magnets is nergizec, its linger 59 will be drawn down into the path of movement of the indicator linger so as to arrest it.
The apparatus illustrated in Fig. l is installed at some convenient point; the battery 61 has one oi? its poles connected to the terminal 62 vhich is connected to one side er a switch 63, the other side of which is connected to terminal (ll; the terminal is grounded upon the main b dy of the structure. so as to be thus connected with shaft 51 and brushes 5% and 55; a wire leads 3 from terminal 64 to one end of the coil of magnet 47 while the opposite end of said coil is bifurcated, one side, 66, leading to one end of the coil of magnet 27, while the other side, 67, leads to one end of the coil of magnet 29; a wire 68 leads from the opposite end of the coil of magnet 27 and a wire 69 leads from the opposite end of the coil of magnet 29, and these two wires 68 and 69 are carried through the territory to be protected. Each sub-division of this territory is provided with an adequate chain of thermostats 7 0 said thermostats being of that type wherein the fusing of a fusible element will cause a break in both sides of the circuit. ires 68 and 69 are brought together into a wire 71 at the far end of the system and returned to battery 61. The two terminals 1 1 and 1a are connected by wires 72 and 73, respectively, with an ordinary fire alarm system connecting with fire headquarters. By this arrangement it will be noticed that the entire current of battery 61 is caused to flow through the coil of magnet 47 while said current is divided between the coils of magnets 27 and 29. Under normal conditions the circuit through coils 4L7, 27 and 29 is closed so that finger 22 is held in the path of movement of finger 21 (because armatures 26 and 28 are held down upon the magnets 27 and 29) and finger 15 is held in the path of possible movement of the long arm of lever 1-2. Finger ll of disk 12 is, however, initially beyond the short arm of lever 42, as clearly shown in Fig. 1.
Each of the indicator magnets A to H inclusive comprises two windings which are separate and distinct but act in the same direction on the coil. One of said windings terminates in the adjacent terminal 57 while the other terminates in the adjacent terminal 56. The two windings of magnet A are connected by wires 81 and 82 respectively with the wires 68 and 69 between the positive side of the battery 61 and the thermostats 70 of section A of the system. Similarly wires 83 and 84 connect with the coils of magnet B; wires 85 and 86 connect with the coils of magnet C; wires 87 and 88 connect with the coils of magnet D; wires 89 and 90 with the coils of magnet E; wires 91 and 92 with the coils of magnet F; wires 93 and 94: with the coils of magnet G, and wires 95 and 96 with the coils of magnet H.
In case of fire, in say section F of the building, both sides 68 and 69 of the circuit will be broken and consequently both armatures 26 and 28 will be released so as to thus release arm 21 and permit the motor to move, and the armature 46 will be released so that finger 45 will be withdrawn from the path of movement of lever 42. Thereupon shaft 11 will be rotated by the motor and projections 13 of disk 11 will be carried into engagement with terminal 14 so as to intermittently with draw it from terminal let, thus successively breaking the fire alarm circuit 7273 and imposing an alarm on the circuit in the usual manner. hen finger 4L1 reaches the short arm of lever 42 it will pass freely beyond said lever because of the withdrawal of finger 45 and consequently the full possible number of rotations of shaft 11 will be permitted, the
motor stopping only when stopfinger 15 comes into engagement with the stop 17.
lVhen shaft 11 begins its rotation shaft 51 will also be rotated and the indicator finger 52 and arm 53 will rotate with it, the brushes on said arm coming first into contact with and connecting terminals 56 and 57 of the coils of magnet A but, there being a break in the section F no current can reach either coil of magnet A. The same is true of succeeding magnets and arm 52 therefore continues in its movement until brushes 54 and contact with the terminals 56 and 57 of the coils of magnet F. As soon as this occurs, there being a break in the main circuit in section F, current flows from the battery through wires 71 and wires 68 and 69 in parallel to wires 91 and 92 and thence through the two coils of magnet F to terminals 56 and 57 thereof; thence through brushes 5% and 55 to terminal 62, and thence to the battery, thus energizing magnet F and causing the armature 58 thereof to be drawn down in the path of movement of the oncoming indicator finger thus arresting the indicator finger so as to give an indication of the particular section of the building in which the fire exists. The same result may be attained by opening switch 63 but in that case there is no energization of any of magnets A to H and the indicator continues its movement until stopped by pin 100. If, however, instead of a fire, there has been an accidental break in one side only of the systemsay in section F,andv assuming that the break is in wire 68, the flow of current will be interrupted through the coil of magnet 27 and arm 2t will thus be withdrawn so as to withdraw finger 22 from engagement with finger 21 and the motor is permitted to start, but there continues to be a flow of current through wire 69, coil of magnet 29, and wire 67 through the coil of magnet a7, and consequently armature 46 is not released and finger 4E5 remains in its nor- .ial position so that, upon the near completion of the first rotation of shaft 11, finger 41 comes into engagement with the short arm of lever 42 and the long arm of said lever comes into engagement with finger 15 and is there stopped, thus arresting further rotation of shaft 11. The consequence is that there has been only a single alarm imposed on the circuit 72- 3 and the fire headquarters knows that, while there is trouble 'in the system, there is no fire.
lVhen shaft 11 begins its rotation, shaft 51 brushes and the terminals and of magnet 3, with the metal frame of "he structure and thence through the terbattery 61. There will therent through one or the out, because one of the i n ignet Li and the current s not suliicient to draw 8 oi sald magnet. hon- V tor arm proceeds on its isl es and successively i h the terminals 56 and 5T oi"- the magnets l D, E, and As soon brushes 51- a i terminals 56 id 5: contact with and 5? of niagn n thci through both wires 91 and 3S and (39 be iagnet F, because are connected with wires tween the positive side or the battery and the point of accidental break in section F. lhere is therefore a flow of current through both wires 91 and 92 and throu h botl coils of magnet F, consequently ausing arm 58 of magnet if to move down into pa xition to arrest indicator It will be noticed that, by the expedient of the two distinct windings or the indicator magnets, .a to H inclusive, t 1e connecting brushes may at all. operations traverse the terminals without causing an encrgization of any one of the magnets until that one is reached which corres ends to the point of break in either side of the systen'i wthout, however, any possibility of short circuiting the two parallel wires of the system.
