Description

n. 0; SOUTHWORTH.
' TOOL. APPLICATION FILED APR. 24, 1909 Patented Dec. 7, 1909.
DEWIT'I G. SOUTI-IWORTH, OF SOUTH BEND, INDIANA.
TOOL.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. '7, 1909.
Application filed April 24, 1909. Serial No. 491,907.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DEWITT C. SOUTH- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tools for applying trolley wire hangers to their supporting wires.
Trolley wire hangers are usually very much larger at their center than at their ends rendering it rather difficult to secure the hanger to its supporting wire against the tension .of the wire, and for this reason I have provided a simple, inexpensive, durable and efficient tool designed to engage the supporting or stay wire and the hanger to position them with relation to each other.
The invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more particularly referred to in the following specification and drawing, and as particularly laid out in the appended claim.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a side elevation of my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view. Fig. 3 is a view illustrating the application of the tool. Fig. 4 is an elevation of a trolley wire hanger.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, the reference character 1 indicates a span, stay or support wire which is drawn taut by the trolley poles, (not shown) and upon which the trolley wire hanger 2 is supported, said trolley hanger comprising the grooved head portion 3 in the groove of which is disposed the span or stay wire 1 and which also has the parallel arms 4 and 5 disposed in the same place as the groove of the head 3, each arm having a hook '6 adapted to engage the span wire 1, the
hanger also having the usual other set of lower arms 7.
The stay or span wire 1 is first drawn taut from pole to pole, after which the hook 6 of the arm 4 is engaged over the wire 1. It would be exceedingly diflicult to pull the hook 6 of the arm 5 into overlapping engagement with the wire 1 without the employment of some suitable device, and for this reason I have devised a tool comprising a lever 8, whose inner end is curved at 9 and provided with flat side faces and bifurcated at 10 to receive a grooved wheel 11, which grooved wheel 11 is designed to ride upon one side of the arm 5, as shown in Fig. 3, there being an arm 12 pivoted at 13 to the curved portion 9 of the lever 8, and at its outer end provided with a hook 14 designed to engage over the wire 1. Thus, when the device is positioned, as shown in Fig. 3, it is comparatively easy to engage the hook 6 of the arm 5 with the wire 1 by forcing the lever 8 to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, this operation drawing the wire 1 and arm 5 toward each other and in doing so the roller 11 rides upon the arm 5 to reduce friction between the device and hanger to substantially a minimum. It will therefore be understood that in order to secure the hanger in position upon its supporting wire it is only necessary to engage the hooked end 6 of either the arms 4 or 5 to the wire 1 and then connect the device up with the wire and the opposite arm 4 or 5, as the case may be, and by forcing the device in one direction, the hook of the opposite arm may be secured to the wire 1, the latter being drawn taut in the operation and fitted in the groove of the head 3, thereby insuring a firm and substantial mounting of the hanger.
What is claimed is 1- A device of the class described, comprising a lever having a curved end whose extremity is bifurcated with a flattened portion above the bifurcation, a grooved roller mounted in the bifurcation, and an arm having one end pivotally secured to the lever at its flattened portion above the bifurcation and having its other end formed into a hook disposed in a lateral direction with respect to the lever, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
DEIVITT C. SOUTHWORTH.
