JOSEPH W. ROBERTSON, OF CADIZ, OHIO.
WHIP-LOCK.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH W. Roena'rsort, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cadiz, in the county of Harrison and State of ()hio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Whip-Locks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in whip looks.
The aim of my invention is to provide a light, neat, simply constructed and positively operating device, arranged to be readily secured to any whip socket of ordinary construction, in a manner permitting a whip of any size to be firmly locked within the socket.
Another object is to provide a whip socket attachment, arranged to clasp the lines while not in the hands of the driver.
\Vith these and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made wit-hin the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the sev-.
eral views, Figure 1 shows an elevational view with parts broken away, of a whip socket provided with my improved locking mechanism. Fig. 2 is a top view. Fig. 3 shows an enlarged detached detail of the spring as used in my invention.
The whip is the part of a horse equipment most likely to be lost through theft, and in my present invention I aim to provide a neat, readily-attachable means, so constructed that the same may be secured to a whip socket of conventional conformation, in a manner permitting a whip to be securely locked therein.
In the accompanying drawings, the nu meral 5 designates what I term the carrier bar, which bar at its upper end is provided with the outstanding securing head 6 provided with a pin opening 7, and at the opposite end terminating in the guiding lip 8, as clearly disclosed. This carrier bar is provided with the supporting ears 9 these ears carrying the pivot pin 10. Proximal to these ears 9, I provide the pin openings 11.
The carrier bar 5 is provided with the Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 10, 1909.
Patented Dec. 7, 1909. Serial No. 501,243.
I clamping collar 12 the ends 13 of which are provided with the perforations 15 arranged to receive the clamping bolt 1% by means of which this collar is securely clamped to a whip socket A of any ordinary construction. The clamping collar 12 is held to the carrier bar 5 by means of the pins 16 held within the openings 11, as disclosed in Fig. 1.
Held within the outstanding head 6, which head is arranged to rest upon the upper end of the whip socket A is the whip clamping member as used in my invention, comprising a pliant curved, sheet metal member 20 preferably made of spring steel, at one end carrying the locking eye 21 while the remaining end is provided with a plurality of eye openings 22 arranged to receive the eye 21. The end of this pliant locking band having the openings 22 is provided with the recurved edge 23 operating as a. finger hold by means of which this band may be contracted or opened. This band 20 is secured to the outstanding locking head 6 by means of the pin 25 and is pivotally carried by this pin. The inner face of this locking band is provided with a lining of chamois or any other suitable material, so that the whip upon which this collar is clamped will not be marred in being locked within the band. The pin 25 which pivotally carries the pliant locking band 20 also serves in securing the coiled spring 26 to this outstanding locking head (i in that this spring 26 is provided with the terminal ear 28 arranged to receive the stem of the pin 25, to firmly hold the spring to the head.
Pivotally held upon the pin 10 is the clamping arm 30 as used in my invention, this arm having the upper terminal head 31 provided with the socket 32 within which is held the end of the coiled spring 26, as clearly disclosed in Fig. 1. At its lower end this clamping arm 30 is provided with the stop shoulder 32 and the outstanding guide lip 35 arranged for coaction with the guiding lip 8;
The operation of my device is very simple. When it is desired to secure my looking mechanism to a socket already fixed to the dashboard of a vehicle, the operator places the clamping band 12 about the whip socket and securely fixes the same by means of the bolt 14. In this condition the pliant locking band20 is held upon the upper end of the whip socket, as disclosed. Owing to the resilience of the clamping band 20, this band is normally held in an open position, so that the whip stock may be introduced at any time. After the whip stock has been introduced into the socket should it be desired to lock the whip within the socket, the o erator would grasp the end 23 of the p iant band and firmly draw this band about the whip and then fasten the end to the eye 21 by introducing this eye into one of the openings 22. The whip stock would then be firmly clamped within the locking band. In the drawings the letter B represents the stock of a whip clamped within the band 20. The band is then secured to the eye 21 by means of an ordinary padlock 35 which is preferably a spring lock opened by means of a suitable key which the op erator carries. In order that the lock may not become detached from the locking band, I provide the same with the chain 36 which has its end secured to the operating end of the band as disclosed. The locking eye 21 is secured near one end of the pliant looking band and is so positioned relative to the whip socket that the same will be immediately in front of and directed toward the drivers seat. An incident of convenience to this arrangement of a locking means for a whip is, that when not used for locking the whip, the clamping band lies open and above the whip socket.
When the driver desires to secure the lines on leaving the vehicle he introduces the same between the guiding lips 8 and 35 to throw the clamping arm 30 outward at its lower end, permitting the ready introduction of the lines between the carrier bar 5 and the clamping arm 30, where the lines are firmly but removably held.
From the foregoing it will be seen that the main structural advantages of my invention reside in the novel arrangement of the attachable carrier bar 5, the pivotally held pliant clamping band, and the spring pressed line clamping member 30.
The device is noticeable because of its extreme simplicity, and the whip may be introduced into the socket and locked, with ease, accuracy and despatch.
From the foregoing it will be seen, that the whip locking means including the carrier bar and the clamping band, is both revolubly and lengthwise adjustably secured to the whip socket.
And having thus described my said invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent is:
1. A whip lock having in combination, a carrier bar having an outstanding head at one end, an oppositely extending guide lip at the other and an intermcdiately positioned car, a flat pliant locking band, a securing pin carried by said outstanding head, said pin at one end supporting said locking band, a coiled spring carried at the remaining end of said pin, a clamping arm having a guide lip at its lower end for coaction with said first mentioned guide lip and a socket at its upper end registering with said spring, a pin carried by said ear to pivotally support said arm, an eye carried at one end of said band the remaining end of said band having a plurality of eye openings arranged to engage said eye, a lock to engage said eye, and a clamping collar carried by said carrier bar.
2. The combination with a carrier bar, of a clamping collar secured to said bar inter mediate of its ends, a pivot pin carried at the upper end of said carrier bar, a clamping band pivotally carried by said pin, said band at one end having a plurality of eye openings, an eye carried at the remaining end of said clamping band arranged for engagement in said eyes, and means to lock said band end to said eye.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH IV. ROBERTSON.
