HENRY W. HOOK, OF YOUNGrSTOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE YOUNGSTOWN SHEET AND TUBE COMPANY, OF YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. 1909.
Application filed January 25, 1909. Serial No. 474,019.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY W. Hoon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented or discovered new and useful Improvements in Skelp Treating Apparatus for Lapweld Pipe, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention has relation to the manufacture of lapweld pipe; more particularly to the introduction of a pair of bending rolls between the skelping table and the bending die. Its object is to give the skelp an initial transverse curve to shape it substantially to the curvature of the bottom of the bending die at its feeding-in end.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of my apparatus involving my invention; Fig. 2, a plan thereof; and Fig. 3, a vertical section taken just to the left of the bending rolls as shown by the line 3*?) on Fig. 1.
On the drawings, l represents a scarling table shown only in part as it alone does not constitute the present invention. It is intended merely to show the presence of a scaring table of any type.
2 is the bending die for gradually curving the skelp into a form for charging into a welding furnace. The particular die shown is not in itself a part of the present invention.
Between the scarring table and the bendin die I place a pair of cooperating bending ro ls 3 and 4 with their axes lying transversely of the table or direction of travel of the skelp. The upper roll 3 is convex or barrel-shaped and the lower roll 4 is concave, having a curvature fitting that of the roll 3. The pass of these rolls is arranged to receive the skelp-blanks as they are fed along the table l.
At the front of the rolls 3 and 4 is the apron or table 5, hinged to oscillate about the axial center of the roll 4. The table 5 extends from the bending rolls nearly to the bending die 2. The rear end of the table 5 is located so as to receive and support the skelp as they pass from the rolls 3 and 4 to the die 2, the front end of the table being adjustable vertically by means of the rod 6 hinged to its underside and operated by the nut 7, which is supported by the bracket 8. By rotating the nut 7 the outer end of the table 5 may be adjusted so as to direct the skelp properly into the die 2.
Each end of the upper roll 3 is adjusted vertically by a gib 9 adjustably placed between the journal block l0 and the roll housing 11, supporting the same.
I claim- In an apparatus for preparing skelp for lap-weld furnaces, a scaring table, a bending die, a pair of bending rolls between the table and the die for conforming the skelp to the feeding-in end of the die, a skelpsupporting table between the bending rolls and the die, means for pivotally supporting the end of the table near the rolls, a bracket extending' from the roll housing toward the die and beneath the tab1e,.a rod hinged to the table, and an adjusting nut carried by the bracket and working on the rod to adjust the out-er end of the table.
Signed at Youngstown, O., this 21st day of January, 1909.
HENRY W. HOOK.
