CLAMP FOR FENCE-WIRES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN T. GRAYsoN and JAMES I. HENTZ, residing at Blountstown, in the county of Calhoun and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Fence- Wires; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to clamps for holding the ends of fence-wires, so that all the wires can be stretched and tightened simultaneously; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side view of the clamp. Fig. 2 is an end view of the clamp. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the clamp. Fig. 4 is a cross-section through the clamp, taken on the line -V in Fig. l.
A are the wires of a wire fence.
B and C are two clamping-bars between which the end portions of the wires A are inserted.
The bar B is provided with eyes D having screwthreaded stems al' and nuts d for securing them and adjusting them. The eyes D can be made continuous or in the form of hooks, as desired, both forms being shown. The bar C is provided with slots c, and the eyes D are arranged to project partway through these slots.
E are two bearing brackets secured to the bar C. One of these brackets is preferably secured by a thumb-nut e and is provided with a slot e so that the distance between the brackets may be adjusted.
F are two eccentrics j ournaled in the brackets E, and provided with flanges f on one side for retaining them in position; and G is a rod secured to the said eccentrics and extending between them.
H are tapering hooks having flattened sides, which project from the rod or bar G and engage with the portions of the eyes D which project through the slots. The hooks H also bear against the bar C.

I is an operating-lever secured to the middle part of the rod G, and z' is a cam also secured to the middle part of the rod. When the eccentrics are turned so that the hooks H engage with the eyes and the slotted bar C, the cam bears against the middle part of the bar C and prevents it from springing. When the lever I is moved in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 3, the pointed ends of the hooks enter the eyes and operate as wedges. The curved inner parts 2 of the hooks may then draw the eyes through the slots, or the outer parts 3 of the hooks may thrust against the bar C, according to the exact adjustment and proportion of the parts. The large surfaces of the eccentrics alord great frictional resistance, so that the lever I cannot slip back accidentally. The wires are then gripped tightly between the bars B and C, and the device is self-locking. When the hooks are withdrawn from the eyes the wires are released.
K is a flexible connection or sling secured to one side of the bar B. The wire tightening or stretching apparatus is connected to this sling, and the clamping-bars are pulled in the direction of the arrow in Fi l, so that all the wires are stretched simultaneously.
What we claim is:
l. In a clamp for fence-wires, the combination, with two clampin -bars for engaging the wire, one of the said bars being provided with slots and the other bar being provided with eyes which project from the slots; of bearing-brackets secured to the slotted clamping-bar, a rod provided with eccentrics on its ends which are journaled in the said brackets, hooks projecting from the said rod and engaging with the eyes and the slotted bar, and means for turning the said rod and its eccentrics in their bearings.
