Description

N .'ltited tant gaat eine;
Letters .Patent No. 94,205, dated August 31, 1869.
IMIPROVEVIENTIN MACHINE FOR -ROI'U'll-'IIDIIN'C-v TEIEI ORNERS OF SLATE-FRAMES.
.The Schedule referred t'o in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all lwhom. it mag/ contenu ABe it known that we, ROBERTHENEAGE, and AL- BERT STOEER, both of Butalo, in the county ot' Erie, and State of New York,h. ve invented certain new and useful Improvements in Machines for -Rounding the Corners of Slate Frames; and we do hereby declarethat thefollowing is avfull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part ot' this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective'vicw, and
Figure 2, a plan of the under side of the movable table, showing the slotted adjustable bars.
Like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.'V y
Our invention consists in arranging, on a bench, a
movable table, which, by means of slotted bars and.
oted at l) to a short, slotted bar, D, the other end of which works 0n a pivot, c, set in it, andinto the bench A'. These two bars', (l and D, at their connection, b, with each other, form a kind. of toggle-joint, which aids in giving the table B its peculiar motion.
The bar O is providcdwith slots, (I al, and pins, e c, to allow the table to be adjusted forward,.or to move it nearer to or further frompthe cutter, to make the Y diameter ofthe corner-cut less or greater, as desired.
rlhe extreme end of this bar'projccts from the table, and has along slot, a, through which a pin, f, is set, and fastened into the bench A. This allows the table to move forward and back, as well as serving as a pivot for tabie to swing to the right and left on.
The table B has a raised edge, g, formed on its outside', to set the slate E against. v
An adjustable stop,]t, is valso set in the table, to adjust the slate forward o r back to suitthe size of the slate to be presented to the cutter. p
vThis operating-table Bis moved by a long handlever, F, rest-ing on, and pivoted to, at one end, the bench A( 'YA short connecting-arm or level, G, is pivoted to'this, and also tothe table B.
The cutterH Works on an' upright shaft, t', suitably arran ged on the operating-bcnch A, and is rotated by pulley j.
The corner ofthe table B is cut away next thc cutter, so as to leavefroom forthe play of the cutter, and also to allow the lcorner of the slate, when properly placed, to project over and come in contact with the cutter'.
The operation and working of the machine are asfo'llows:
The lever F is .taken by the'operators left liand and drawn toward him, bringing the edge, k, of the table B;,.c1ose to the lever-edge, as shown in iig. 1. This brings the upper corner ofthe'slate-i'ame next to.the revolving cutter. Y l
The operator holds down the slate with his right hand, and pushes the lever F with his left hand from him, and, by the action ofthe short coin'iecting-lever G, the toggle-connection b, of' bars C and D, (on the u nder side of' table 13,) and the slot ct and pin j, the table is drawn gradually inward up to a certain point,
,(the apex of the slate-comen) when, by continued pushing ofthe lever F, it pulls it forward again tillt reaches a stop, l, (the position shown in red lines,) the cutter meanwhile operating on the edge of the slate, and rounding it..
'lhis operation is, of course, repeated on each ofthe four corners, and occupies but a few moments.
The whole device is of the simplest forni and construction.
Ve are acquainted with a patent, No. 50,170, dated ,September 25, 1865, for dressing edges of slateframes, which shows a peculiar rocking or vibrating frame to hold the slate; we are also aware that there are various devices in which the cutter is made to describe the aro cfa circle; such, however, are not the equivalents of our device.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secureby Letters Patent, is
The slotted bars() D, with their pivots b 'c f, table B, hand-lever F, and connecting-arm G, when the parts are constructed, arranged, and operated, substantially described, and for the purpose specified.
In witness whereof, wc lntvehereunto signed our names, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
