TIE AND RAIL-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 30, 1909.
Application filed March 23v 1909. Serial No. 485,202.
To all whom it may concern: I
Be it known that I, iLLEXANDlJlR M. Mov- LAN, citizen of the United States, residing at Century, in the county of l lscambia. and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in 'l'ie and Rail- Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to railways and, has particular reference to an improved tie for supporting the rails of the same.
An object of this invention .is to'provide a tie which is formed of metal and which possesses the necessary resilient qualities which are produced by the common wood ties now employed and to overcome the main dithculty which has been enmuntcred in the tormotion of metallic ties.
The invention has for another object. the construction of a metallic tie which is provided with clamping means tor engaging the bases of the rails which bind tightly upon the rails upon the disposition of weights upon the rails at their clamped points, the clamping means being actuated by the depression of the upperl'ace ot the tie in forming a resilient or cushioning supporting means for the rail and thereby binding the same upon such depression.
The invention turther contemplates the provision of a tie which is provided with means whereby the same may be rigidly anchored bcncath the rails in the gravel, sand or the like upon which the ties are positioned and which will prevent the lateral displacement of the same incident. to the Vibrations caused by the passing of trains over the same.
The invention has for a still turthcr object the provision of a metallic tie which pos- St ".S the above cuunieratcd advantages and which at the same time is of simple 't'ormat-ion so as to produce a tie which can be economically constructeiil and thereby brought into general use.
Other objects and :ulvantages derived from the peculiar construction, Formations and arrangements of the parts of the invention will be disclosed in the following specili alion and ap -n-l d claim.
For a full 1mdcrstandin; of the invention reference is to be had to the :tollowing description and accompai'lying drawings, in which li igure 1 is a perspective view of the improved tie disclosing a rail as secured at one. end of the same. l ig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section through the same disclosing two rails engaged with the tie. Fig. i; is a longitudinal section showing the moditied form of rest employed. Fig. tis a perspective view of a moditied form of a tie in an inverted position. Fig. 5 is a detailinl perspective oi the rest. employed in the preferred form. Fig. (3 is a detailed perspective of the rest employed in.the modilital form, and Fig. 7 is a detailed pcrs 'icctive of one ot the clan'ips employed in connection with the tie.
ot-responding and like parts are. referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same ret'crencc charactcrr.
Referring to the drawings the numeral 10 designates an elongated plate which is of substantially rectangular lornmtion and which l'orms the body portion oi" the tic. The plate itl i adapted for disposition beneath tho raiis l1 and l) and is adapted to support and to be secured to tho. same. 'lhe plate It) is provided with a depending [tango l? which is disposed about the edges o't the same and which is utilized For the purpose of reint'orcingthe plate 10 and also for hold-- ing a body ol earth. gravel or the like bcncath the tic in order to form a substantial support for the same. 'the ends of the plate 10 are provided with guards H which t'Olttl'illSO metalli strips bent. into semicircular formation. the opposite ends of the same being clamped in any suitable manner to the tlanges It) at the opposite sides ot' the plate 10. .lhe guards l t are each provided with cnlargcd portionsnt their oppo ite ends in order to 'l'orm a seating member to engage in the earth and to prevent oi the falling of the same from b neath the plate 10 when positioned upon cmbauluocnts or the lllit. 'lhe plattit) is furth r anchored in the earth upon which the .--amo is ll])])t)lt\ai by the ion nally in the opposite ends of the plate to i be positioned beneath the bases of the rails 10 and 11 and through which are inserted clamps l7, thesame being disposed in pairs and being oppositely positioned for engagement upon the opposite sides of the rails. The clamps l7 eachcomprise shanks 18 which are beveled at their upper faces for engage ment beneath the plate 10 and adapted for insertion through the slots l6,' the inner ends of the shanks 18 being turned upwardly and being provided with lips 19 which engage thevopposite sides of the bases of the rails 11v and 12. For the purpose of securing the clamps 17 against the under face of the plate 10 a rest 20- is employed'which comprises an elongated metallic bar extending practically the entire length of the plate and being provided at its opposite ends and at its intermediate-portion with upwardly extended bolts 21 which are passed through apertures formed in the plate 10 and which are held in such position by the provision of suitable clamping nuts 92. The rest 20 is provided at its opposite extremities with oppositely beveled faces formed in the up per edge thereof as at 23 and 24, the beveled faces 23 and Qtengaging the under edges of the shanks 18 to cause the shanks to impinge against the under face of the plate 10. When-thus positioned the inner extremities of the shanks 18 are held in spaced relation to the adjoining edges of the beveled faces 23 and 24 in order to admit of the downward movementof the same upon the disposition of weights upon the rails 11 and 12 which are positioned overthe same and engaged between the clamps 17. Owing to the formations of the clamps 17 it is readily ob served that When the rails 11 and 12 are. depressed the plate 10 at the points of support of the rails depressed and causes the inward movement of the lips 19 against the webs of the rails 11 and 12 and thereby causes the firm gripping action upon the same. The rest 20 limits the movement of the clamps 17 by reason of the formation a of the beveled faces 23 and 24 which engage the lower edges of the shanks 18 when a sutficient'weight is disposed upouthe rails 1.1. and 12- and thereby prevents the further downward movement of thesame. The
plate 10 may be provided with any numberof slots 16 which are arranged in parallel and which are formed for the purpose of admitting of the positioning of any number of-clamps 17 in order to firmly grasp the tures for the reception 0 rails 11 and 12, such formation adapted particularly where two rails are jointed.- It
is also observed that the clamps 17 may be spaced owing to the length of the slot 16in order to admit of the positioning of fish-1 plates or the like against the opposite sides of the rails 11 and 12 and to becaused to 7 0 under face of the plate 10 and the beveled i faces 23 and 24.
In the drawings is disclosed a modification of the tie which comprises a metallic plate 25 adapted for engagement upon the; a I upper face of any suitable support and which. is provided with luralities of aper f bolts 26 which are carried upon rests 27, the latter being formed of short lengths of metal and having beveled faces 28 and 29 at the upper edges of the same for the reception of clamps 30 of a construction as specified.
In securing the rails 11 and 12 upon the plate 10 the same are positioned over the slot 10 when'the clamps 17 are inserted through the apertures and engaged against the opposite sides of the bases of the rails, the rest 20 being spaced downwardly from the plate I 10 sufiiciently to admit of the insertion of the shanks 18 of the clamps. now drawn upwardly against the under face of the base 10 and drawn tightly against the I same through the medium of the clamping nuts 22 and bolts 21 which causes the shanks 18 to impinge against the under face of the plate 10 and to thereby rigidly hold the clamps 17 in position. Owing to the provision of the beveled faces 23 and 24 the inner ends of the shanks 18 are held upwardly from the beveled faces 23 and 24 and aro*l05 supported in such position by means of the resi iency of the shanks 18 as the same 1mpinge against the under face of the plate 10 and the outer ortions of the inclined faces 23 and 2 1. hen the clamps are thus in position the earth or other he formm substance is packed around the edges and orced upwardly beneath the flange 13 which securely holds the tie in position. The shanks 18 of the clamps 17 are of such'a length as to admit of the withdrawal and insertion of the same when the rests are lowered, which is acconiplished by the releasing of the nuts 22 from the upper facevof the base 10. It is observed that when a weight is disposed 12 0 upon the rails 11 and 12 the plate 10 is caused to bend downwardly and to carry therewith the shanks 18 thus throwing the lips 19 more closely against the opposite sides-of the bases of the rails 11 and 12 and thus serving to clamp the same more rigidly Therest 20 is 9 5 eeeeee' in position.- l'n acljuseing the distances between each pair of the clamps 17 it will be noted that the rest 20 is distanced from the plate 10 aeeoreing to the positions of ihe espeetive shanks 18, which adjustment is fieeted iiiyough the medium of the beveled "MEGS S8 anti fileving films (lesci'ibecl the invention, What is claimed as new is:
A tie as specified comprising a plate having slots longitudinally formed in the opposite ends thereof, said plate adapted to support rails lisposeil over the slots therein,
clamps positioned in pairs through the slots and engaged a ainst the rails, a rest having beveled upper ieees for engagement with the under edges said oiemps, said rest adagfied to admit of the downward movement of iiicl clamps upon the disposition of Weights upon the rails. In testimony whereof Z all my signeiiore in presence of two witnesses;
ALEXANDER l'vl. liiGYLAN.
