Description

waited gisten' Letters .Patent N o. 94,180, dated August 31, 1869.
dwp-
IMPRovnMENT 1N REEL AND SWE-T. I
The Schedule referred to in theserLetfers Patent and making part of the same,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, M. V. BRlGHAM, of Mannsville, in the county of Jefferson, and in the State of New "York, `have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Quill-Wheels, Swifts,&c.; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, referenceV being had to the accompanying drawing, making a part of this speccation, in which- (Figure 1 is a side elevation of Vmy improvement', an
Figure 2 is a front elevation ofthe same.
Letters of like name and kind'refer to like parts in each of the gures.
My invention consists in thepeculiar construction and arrangement of a quill-wheel, swift, and reel, bymeans of which the several devices are adapted to each other, and so combined as to occupy the same space only that has heretofore been required for each, whereby their cost is materially lessened, and greater convenience secured.
YIn the annexed drawing- A represents the bedpiece, supported upon suitablc legs, B B, and consisting of two parts, a and af, the former of which is provided," upon each side, with a tongue, which fits into a corresponding groove in the latter, so as to permit said parts to be shut together or drawn out, and -shorten or lengthen said A hand-screw, O, is journalled within a short vertical standard, D, secured to the part a, and passes through a correspondingl nut, E, attached to the part a', by which means, when said screw is turned to the right or left, said parts a and a' are adjusted to or from each other.
Secured to and extending upward vertically from the outer end ofthe bed-piece, is a standard, F, in the upper end of which is journalled.p a horizontal shaft, G, having upon one end a screw-thread, g, and upon the other a grooved wheel, H.
Journalled within the standard F and a. brace, f,
below and parallel with the shaft G, is a spindle-shaft, I, havipg upon its inner end, between said standard and brace, agrooved pulley, K.
A cord, la, passes around both wheel and pulley, so
that when said wheel is revolved, motion is communicated to said pulley and spindle, the whole, as thusv constructed, forming the quill-wheel.
To form the reel, two arms, L L, lare secured together in the form of a Greek cross, and, by means of a suitable opening at their centre, are passed over the shaft and against the face of the wheel l]E[.
A pin, l, passing through one of the arms and through an arm of the wheel, secures them together,
and also furnishes a handle for operating the reel.
Projecting outward from the face ofthe arms, and
- at a right angle'therewith, are four studs, M M,
upon whichrthe yarn is wound. A series 'of holes in said arms permits of the radial adjustment of the studs so 'as to conform tothe size of the skein desired.
Projecting horizontally to the rear from the standard F, is an arm, N, upon which is pivoted a worm# wheel, O, its axis being at a right angle with the shaft G, so as to permit the teeth of said wheel toengage with thel screw-thread upon said shaft. Y.
' A pin, o, projecting outward from the face of said Wheel, engages with a spring, n, secured upon the arm N, so that at eachrevolution of said wheel, said spring is raised and released, producing suicient sound to warn the operator.
The number 0f teeth in said Wheel being made to correspond with the number of threads desired in each knot of the skein, it will be evident that at each revolution of the same, as indicated by the warning-snap of the spring, the required number of threads will be wound upon the reel.
lVhen it is desired to'form a swift, the arms L L -are detached from the shaft G, and placed upon the upper end of the standard D, where a suitable bearing or journal, d, is provided, in which position said arms form a convenient and desirable means for holding yarn, thread, 8tc., while being rewound.
In order to accomplish 4the latter object, a spool or quill is placed upon the spindle of the quill-wheel, and the lend of the thread or yarn from the skein upon the swift-s secured thereto, when by turning the wheel H, said thread or yarn will be drawn from the swifts and quickly 'rewound upon the spool.
It will be readily seen that when the device is 'used as a reel, vthe bed-piece will require suiicient length only to give it a firm bearing upon the iiloor;'
but when used as a swift, said bed-piece will require lengthening, so as to permit the arms L to revolve vwithout striking other portions of the device, and the screw is employed for this purpose,`
The especial advantages possessed by this device are, convenience and cheapness, as, from its construction, so little space is occupied as to enable it to be stored as readily as either one of the heretofore separate implements, while, from its compactness and the small number of parts required, it can be furnished at a small cost, as comparedwith other devices intended for a like purpose.
Having thus vfully set forth the nature andmerits of my invention,
Whatl claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
