To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND J. ANTHONY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brookview, Rensselaer county, New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Rail-Locking Mechanisms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
One of the objects of my'invention is to provide a novel form of railway-rail chair what into the road-bed, due to the heavy weight of the trains constantly passing thereover, the adjustable rail-clamping members of my locking-mechanism may be moved to the proper position to maintain correct elevation of the railway-rail with respect to its next succeeding, or preceding, or adjacent, rail.
With these objects in view, and others appearing as the specification proceeds, my invention comprehends the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as
will be hereinafter fully detailed in the specification, summed up in the claims, and
illustrated in the drawing;
In the accompanying drawing, forming part of my application-for patent, and in which like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a transverse vertical section through my improvements, certain parts being shown in elevation; Fig. 2 is an end view, in elevation, of my improvements; Fig. 3 is a detached detail view of one of the adjustable rail-clamping members of my locking-mechanism; Fig. 4: .is. a. section on the line 33, Fig. 3, Fig. 5 is a detached detail view, in side elevation, of the'railwayrail chair; Fig.:6 is .a transverse sectional depending strengthening-webs b 71 view of the metal tie; and Fig. 7 is a detached detail View, in end elevation, of my chair.
Referring, now, in detail to the drawing: although, as is obvious, the supporting means for the railway-rail D may be an ordinary wooden tie, I prefer to utilize, as such supporting means, a peculiar form of metallic chair and tie.
A indicates my metallic tie, which, as shown, preferably comprises the base a and two perforated side-flanges a, at extending longitudinally of the tie; the tie beinoadaptedto be disposed in the road-bed and suitably ballasted, as is usual and well known.
Adapted to be disposed within the tie A is my improved form of chair B, comprising an upper, horizontal bridge or seat I) for the railway-rails, and depending sideflanges b, b, perforated, as shown at 6 6 said flanges contacting with the flanges a, a and being'recessed toward their tops, as shown at 6, [9 to form shoulders to receive and bear upon the tops of flanges a, a. At each end of the flanges b, b is a pai(r of one pair thereof being shown in Fig. 2 and the other pair thereof in Fig 7 Between each two webs of each pair is a channeled-out portion, or recess, or socket b and uniting the webs'at one end with the corresponding webs at the other end are a pair of integral strengthening braces 79 (Figs. 1, 2 and 7).
The adjustable rail-clamp members of my rail-locking mechanism comprise a pair of clamps C, (1, having, each, a body-portion c" centrally a ertured, as shown at 0 and a plurality o radially-projecting arms a, c, c (in this instance, three arms are illustrated merely as an example) of varying lengths, measured from a line drawn from the central point of aperture 0 to the end, and bisecting the width of each arm, for a purpose presently appearing. Each said arm terminates in. aflange or lug c bent at an angle to the plane of the arms 0, 0, 0 one of said flanges, as required, being adapted to bear upon the top of the base d of the railway-rail D the drawing, the shortest arm, 0, beingso shown as bearing. upon the railway-rail base,the arm 0 being the next longer, and the arm 0 being the longest).
Passing through the aperture 0 in each the bolt, and which may be tightened up to' form a rigid structure, as is obvious.
As will be seen in the drawing, the clamps O, G are disposed in a vertical position against the ends of the chair B.
Between the base cl of the railway-rail and the top 5 of the chair, a strip E of suit able material, such as wood, may be and desirably is disposed, subserving the dual function of a leveler for the railway-rail and a deadener of noise, to eliminate the noise which would otherwise result from trains passing over the rails, if metal were placed upon metal.
The great advantage of my adjustable clamping-members C, C is apparent: If one or more of the metallic ties A should sink somewhat into the roadbed, by reason of the weight of trains constantly by passing thereover, all that is necessary to be done is simply to remove the strip of wood E, replace it by a piece of greater thickness, loosen the nut 0 somewhat, revolve or turn the adjustable clamping-members C, 0 around, so that another arm (such as 0, or 0 is brought to bear upon the top of the rail-base (Z, and then tighten up the nut 0". It will be noted that, in this operation, there is no necessity of going to the trouble and work of disturbing the position of the tie a, or the ballasting, and that the operation is performed without interference with the metallic tie a, or the ballasting.
One of the features of my invention which distinguishes it in the art is the peculiar formation of my railway-clamp members C, C, having the radially-projecting arms of differing lengths, for the purpose outlined.
The parts of my mechanism are few in number and are simple to manufacture, and can be sold at a reasonable cost; are strong and durable in use; and are exceedingly efficient in operation.
Modifications in detail may be made, and, in fact, will readily suggest themselves to those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains; but all such changes and modifications as come within the terms of the appended claims constitute no departure from the spirit of the invention, and are within the scope and purview thereof.
Having thus fully described my inven tion, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. The combination with supportingmeans for a railwayrail, of railway-rail clampingmembers vertically disposed at opposite ends of said supporting-means, and comprising, each, a body portion having radially-projecting arms of differing lengths, any one of said arms being adapted to bear against the base of the rail.
2. The combination with supportingmeans for a railway-rail, of railway-rail clamping-members vertically disposed at opposite ends of said supporting-means, and comprising, each, a body portion having radially-projecting arms of differing lengths, any one of said arms being adapted to bear against the base of the rail, and means common to both said clamping members for uniting said members against movement.
3. A railway-rail clamping-member comprising a body-portion having a plurality of radially-projecting arms of differing lengths, any one of said arms being adapted to bear upon the base of a railway-rail, each arm being formed, at the upper end, with a flange bent at an angle to the plane of said arm.
4. A railway-rail clamping-member comprising an apertured body portion having a plurality of radially-projecting arms of differing lengths, any one of said arms being adapted to bear against the base of a railway-rail, each arm being formed, at the upper end, with a flange bent at an angle to the plane of said arm, and means passing through said aperture to lock said clampingmember against movement.
5. A pair of duplicate railway-rail clamping-men1bers, each comprising a body-portion having a plurality of radially-projecting arms of diflering lengths, any one of said arms being adapted to bear against the base of a railway-rail; and means common to both said clamping-members for removably uniting said pair of clamping-members.
6. A pair of duplicate railway-rail clamping-members, each comprising an apertured body-portion having a plurality of radiallyprojecting arms of differing lengths, any one of said arms being adapted to bear against the base of a railway-rail, and means common to both said clamping-members and passing through said apertures for removably uniting said clamping-members.
7. In a railway-rail locking mechanism, a rail-chair having a channeled-out portion; duplicate rail-clamping members, each comprising an apertured body-portion and a plurality of arms radially-projecting therefrom and of differing lengths, any one of said arms being adapted to bear against the base of a railway-rail; and a bolt common to both said clamping-members and passing through said apertures and disposed in said channeled-out portion and carrying an adjusting-nut.
8. In a railway-rail locking-mechanism, a rail-chair having a channeled-out portion; duplicate rail-clamping members, each comprising an apertured body-portion having a plurality of radially-projecting arms of differing lengths, each arm being formed at the end with a flange bent at an angle to the plane of said arm and adapted to bear upon the top of the base of a railway-rail; and a bolt passing through said apertures and disposed in said channeled-out portion and carrying an adjusting-nut.
9. In a railway-rail locking mechanism, a rail-chair having at each end a pair of depending strengthening-webs forming therebetween a channeled-out portion; duplicate rail-clamping members, each comprising a perforated body-portion having a plurality of radiallyprojecting arms of diflering lengths; and a bolt passing through said apertures and disposed in said channeled-out portions and carrying an adjusting-nut.
10. In a railway-rail locking-mechanism, a rail-chair having, at each end, a pair of depending strengthening-webs forming there between a channeledout portion; two strengthening-braces, each one uniting a web at one end with a corresponding web at the other end; duplicaterail-clamping-members, each comprising a perforated body-portion having a lurality of radially -projecting arms of di ering lengths; and a bolt coinmon to both said clamping-members and passing through said apertures and disposed in said channeled-out portions and carrying an adjusting-nut.
11. In a railway-rail locking mechanism, a metallic tie formed with a base and with two vertical, longitudinally-extending side flanges; a rail-chair having two depending, longitudinally-extending flanges disposed in contact with said side-flanges of the tie; means for locking the chair and the tie together; and a pair of duplicate rail-clamping members, each comprising a body-portion having radiall -projecting arms of differing lengths; an means common to both said clamping-members for securing said rail-clamping members to the chair.
