To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SMITH,
a citizen of the United States of America,
residing at Cleveland, inthe county of Gaye-- and pertains more especially therefore to valve-devices in which every surface which is liable to come in. contact with or-be ex- .posed to the corrosive liquid conducted through'the valve-casing of the valve-device 1S composed of non-corrodible metal.
, One object of this invention. is to efliciently but inexpensively reinforce the valveseat of a valve-casing embodying m vention and, having its body compose substantiall of comparatively soft and noncorrodib e metal.
Another object is to have the'valve-seat arranged diagonally of the assageway which is formed in and extends t rough the of the valve-casing and employed in con acting a corrosive iquid through the said body, and to have the valve and its stem and the neck of the valve-casingwhich surrounds the said stein arranged substantially in line endwise to thevalve-seat but at an angle to, the said body, and not only to rein orce-the valve-seat by a hard metal ring or'jframe cast in the valve-seat-forming portion, of the said body and surrounding the valve-seat but to reinforce the neck by a hard metal bar which is cast in the noncorrodible metal of the neck and arranged lon 'tudinally of the longer portion of the and formed integral or rigid with the valve-.seat-reinforcing ard metal frame and wholly unexposed to the corrosive liquid which may be conducted through the aforesaid passageway.

Another object is to provide improved means for establishingoperative connection between the valve-stem and the screw employed in shifting the valve-stem and connected valve endwise to open and close the valve as the case may be.
With these objects in" view, and to the end. of realizing any other advantages here inafter a pearnig, this invention consists in certain eatures of construction, and combinations of parts hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and illustrated in the accompanying drawin s.

The valve B has its circumferentlally extending edge or surface beveled and 'isarranged to seat at its said edge against'the valve-seat 13 when the flaring tially parallel with and arranged in suitable valve is closed. The valve B is rovided centrally of its rear and diametrica y lar e1 end with a stem I) which extends externafily of the valve-casing-in the direction in which the valve-seat flares and consequently leans toward the discharging end of the passa eway 10. The valve-stem 6 extends centra 1y through a tubular neck 15 with which the body A of the valve-casing is provided. The neck 15 is integral and therefore rigid with the body A and arranged at an angle to the body and tips toward the dischargin" end 12 of the passageway 10. The va ve-seat 13 is arranged therefore substantially in line endwise'with the outer end of the neck 15 and the said neck and the valve and its stem are substantiall arallel.
All the surfaces of the tiody A of the valve-casing and its neck 15 which are liable to come in contact with or be exposed to a corrosive liquid conducted by or assing through the passageway 10 in the said body are formed, as already indicated, by a comparatively soft and non-corrodible metal, such, forinstance as a corh osition of lead and antimony, but the valile-seaflforming portion of the body A,to enable it to withstand the pressure against the valve-seat 13 by the valve B in closing the latter, is reinforced, interiorly by a frame D of hard metal such, for instance, as bronze or cast iron. The hard metal frame D is preferably in the form of a ring cast in the non-corrodible metal of the valve-seat-forming portion of the body A of the valve-casing durmg the castingl of the said body. The ring D surrounds t e valve-seat 13 but is wholl unexposed to the passageway 10. As a ready indicated, the va1ve-seat13 flares in the direction in which the neck .15 projects from the body of the valve-casing, and the rin D preferably has; a correspondingly internal surface 14 which is substanin the passagewaylOis interrupted or proximity and concentric relative to the flaring valve-seat 13 and has such arrangement relative to the said'valve-seat that the ring at the diametrically smaller end of its internal surface is as small as or smaller diametrically than the diametrically larger end of the valve-seat so as to very efficiently that side of it which faces toward the said end of the said passagewa considerably shorter than the o posite si e of the neck, and the neck at its astmentio ned and longer side is reinforced interiorly by a bar 01 of hard metal, such, for instance as bronze or cast iron, which is, cast in the comparatively soft and non-corrodible metal of the neck during the castin of the body A of the valve-casing. The bar (1 is arranged longitudinally of and substantially arallel with the neck 15. Preferably the ar (1 is formed integral and consequently rigid with the hard metal ring or frame D. The bar d is referabl curved in cross section concentrically re ative to the line 'of valve-movement as shown in Fig. 5, and provided at its u per end with a'flan e or member 7 which projects laterally and outwardly into a flange 16 which is formed on and extends circumferentially of the outer end of the neck 15.
By the construction hereinbefore described it will be observed that the bar d and the connected ring D form a simple but strong and eflicient reinforcing structure.

The central por- -tion 31 of the yoke therefore forms a nut' which is arranged a suitable-distance outwardly from theaforesaidcap and engaged by the screw R which is provided at its outer end and asuitable distance from the yoke with ahand-wheel 33 for turningtlre screw. The screw R isoperatiyely' connected with they valve-stem b in such a manner that the screw can be turned without turning the valve-stem, but the valve-stem and connected valve are shifted endwise by turning the screw, and the valve is actuated to open or close according as the screw is turned in the one or the other direction. The screw R is provided at its inner end and externally with anannular recess 1' and the valve-stem b is provided at its outer end and externally with an annular recess 35, and my improved spperative connection between the valve-stem and the said screw comprises a couplin composed ,of two sections T- and U whic t.

The coupling-section T is provided with two flanges t' and 36 which engage the recesses r and 35 respectively. The coupling-seetion-U is provided with two flanges u and 37 which engage therecesses r and 35 respectively. The coupling-section T is provided with a uide-arn'l 38 which projects between the an es 30 of one of the end members 29 of t e yoke, and the coupling-section U is provided with a guidearm.39 which projects" between the flanges 30 of the other of the said end members of I the yoke. The guide-arm 38 of the couplin section T is removably secured by a suitably applied screw 'w to an arm or member 40 of the cou ling-section U, and the guide-arm 39 of the couplin -section U is removably secured by a suita ly ap lied screw 51 to an arm or member 41 of t e couplin -section T. Obviously by this construction tie coup.- lin can not turn with the screw. The gulde-arm's- 38 and 39 are sufficiently loose relative to flanges 30 of the yoke to readily permit the removal of the coupling-sections T and U from the valve-stem and the screw R upon detachin the said coupling-sections from each other y withdrawing the screws wand y.
What I claim is 1. In a valve-device for corrosive liquids. a valve-casin having a non-corrodible castmetal body w ich is provided interiorly with -a passageway extending through the valve casing and has an annular flaring valve-seat "forming a portion of the surrounding wall of the said passageway, said valve-seat being reinforced'by a hard metal frame which is in the form of a ring eastin the noncorrodible metal of the valve-seat-forming portion of the body and wholly unexposed to the said passageway, which ring s'urrounds the valve-seat and has-an internal surface which flares in the direction in which the valve-seat flares, said ring at the diametrically smaller end of its said internal surfaces being as small diametrically as the diametrically larger end of the flaring valvescat, and a suitably supported cndwise movable valve controlling continuit in the said beveled to render it capable of seating against the flaring valve-seat.
2. In a valve-device for corrosive liquids, a valve-casing having a non-corrodible castmet-al body which is provided interiorly with a passageway'extending through the valve-casing and has an annular flaring valve-seat forming a portion of the surrounding wall of the said passageway, said passa eway and arranged an valve-seat being reinforced by a hard metal frame which is in the form of a rin cast in the non-corrodible metal of the va ve-seatforming portion of the body and wholly unexposed to the said passageway,-which ring has a flaring internal surface substantially parallel with and arranged in suitable proxunity and concentric relative to and surrounding the valve-seat, and a suitably supneck, said body having avalve-seat which faces in the direction in which the said neck projects from the said body andsurrounds .the said passageway; a valve controlling the said passageway and arranged to seat against the valve-seat, said valve having a stem arran ed centrally of and extendmg through and a suitable distance beyond the outer end of the said neck, and a. suitably applied cap arranged to close the outer end of the neck and provided with means for forming a fluid-tight joint around the valvestem, said cap having a hard metal body portion which is provided in its innerand neck-facing side with recesses which have undercut walls and are occupied by correspondingly shaped members formed on and projecting from the inner side of a noncorrodible metal facing which forms the inner side of the cap.
4. In a valve-device for corrosive liquids, a valve-casing having a non-corrodible cast metal body which is provided interiorly with a assageway extending through the body and has an outwardly projectin tubular neck, said body having a vafire-seat which faces in the direction in which the neck projects from the body; a valve controlling the said passageway and arranged to seat against the valve-seat, said valve havin a stem arranged centrally of and exten in" through and a suitable distance beyond the outer end of the neck and a suitably ap lied ca 2&1'1811 d to close the outer end of the neck aroun the valve-stem and having a hard metal body-portion which .is faced at its inner side with non-corrodible of the'bore forming the walls of a packingreceiving chamber; packing within the said chamber, and means for com ressing the packing to form a fluid-tight. oint around the valve-stem.
In a valve-device for corrosive liquids, a valve-casing having a non-corrodihle body which is provided interiorly with a passage-way extending through the body and has an outwardly projecting tubular neck, said bod having a. valve-seat which faces in the (irection in which the neck projects from the body; an cndwise movable valve controlling the said passage-wa y and arranged to seat against the valve-scat, said valve having a stem arranged centrally of and extending throughand beyond the outer end of the neck and provided at its ouler end and externally with an annular recess; a cap arranged to close the outer end of the neck and having means for forming a fluidtight joint around the valve-stem, said cap being provided at its outer side with a yoke w hich is rigid with the cap, said yoke having end members arranged at opposite sides respectively of and substantially parallel with the valve-stein and a central member arranged a suitable distance outwardly from the cap and provided with a screw-tln'emled hole extending theretln'mlgh and arranged in line cndwise with the valve-stem; a correspondingly threaded screw engaging and extending through the said hole and provided at its inner end and externally with an annular recess; a coupling having members engaging the recesses in the screw and valvestem and thereby establishing operative connection between the valve-stem and the screw. and means for preventing turning of the coupling with the screw.
6. In a valve for corrosive liquids, a valve.-
casing having a non-corrodible body which is provided interiorly with a passageway extending through the body and has an outwardly projecting tubular neck and a valveseat which faces-in the direction in which the neck projects from the body; an endwise movable valve controlling the said and having means forming a fluid-tight joint around the valve-stem, said cap being provided at its outer side witlra bail-shaped yoke which has its end portions arranged at op osite sides res ectively of and substantla 1y parallel wit the valve-stem and each of the said end portions provided at its inner side with two laterally spaced flanges arranged longitudinally thereof, said yoke having its central portion provided with a screw -threaded hole extending therethrough and arranged in line endwise with the valve-stem; a correspondingly threaded screw engaging and extending through the said hole and provided at its mner end and externally with an annular recess; a coupling establishing operative connection between the screw and the valve-stem and comprising two sections embracing opposite sides respectively of adjacent portlons of the valve-stem and screw and having flanges engaging the recesses in the screw and valvestem, each coupling-section having two laterallyand outwardly projecting arms arranged at opposite sides respectively of the coupling, ad acent arms of the said couplingsectious being removably secured together, and one of the cou ling-sections having one, of its arms eXten ing between the flanges on one of the end members of the yoke and the other of the said coupling-sections having one of its arms extending between the flanges of the other end member of the yoke.
