POWER-TRANSMISSION APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
Application filed May 4, 1909. Serial No. 493,811.
'()rin, in the county of Bureau and State of lllinois,'havc invented new and useful Ini- .provenients in lower-Transmission Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention has to do with the t-ausmission of motion to clothes washing machines and clothes wrmgers; and 1t contemplates the provision of simple, compact a'nd easily controlled means through the medimu of which both a clothes washing machine and a clothes wringer may be driven in either direction from a suitably rota-ted shaft, and the wringer readily reversed when occasion demands.
The invention and the details of the present and preferred embodiment thereof will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a motion traitsmission apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention. Fi 2 is a plan view. of the same. Fig. 23 is an' enlargedulctail perspective view taken at an approximate right angle to Fig. 1. Fig. l is a detail viewtakcn at. an approximate right .anglc to Fig. 3, and showing the ar rangcment of the hand levers of the apparatus, relative to the uppermost portion of the main frame and the parts to which the said levers are connected. 7
Similar letters designate corresponding parts in all of the views ol' the drawings, rc-
fcrriug to which:
A is the main frame of my novel apparatus, and It is an auxiliary frame, preferably in the form of an upright, arranged at a suitable distance from the main frame. The main frame A is provided with a depending sleeve 11 which receives a post I), fixed to the floor, and is adjustably connected to said post by set screws r so that the main frame may be positioned at various heights to meet different conditions. in addition to the depending slecvc u. the main frame comprises an upwardly extending portion (1 provided at an intermediate point in its height with a journal box w and also provided at its upper end with a head horizontally slotted at 5 and forming part of a horizontally dis posed platform h, an upwardly extending portion 2' arranged opposite the portion (1 and separated therefrom by a space 7', and a horizontally disposed journal box is arranged on said portion 2' and extending at a right angle from and in line with the transverse center of the before mentioned journal box 0.
J ournaled in the box 0 of main frame A.
and also in a bearing Z on the auxiliary frame 1:- is a drive shaft C, designed to be rotated by any suitable motor through a band and the pulley m-or through the me- "i'lium of any other expedient driving connection. The said shaft C is equipped with 'clutch members I) and E, fixed thereto by set screws or other suitable means and arranged immediately adjacent the ends of the boxc, miter gears F and Gr loosely mounted and movable endwisc on the shaft C andhaving circumferentially grooved portions 1), a clutch member if suitably fixed on the shaft and arranged, by preference. adjaceut'thc. auxiliary frame B, and a sprocket gear I loosely mounted and movable endwise 0n the shaft and having a guard r and a circumferentially grooved portion s. It will also be noticed that the miter gears F and t: are provided with clutch members complementary to the clutch members I) and E, respectively, and that. the sprocket gear I is provided with a clutch member complementary to the clutch member ll. From this it follows that when one of the miter gears I G is placed in engagement. with its clutch member I) or E as the case may be, the said miter gear will rotate with the shaft C but. otherwise the gear will remain idle on the rotating shaft; also, that when the sprocket gear I is placed in engagement with the clutch member H, said sprocket gear will be caused to rotate with the shaft but otherwise will remain at rest on the rotating shaft.
.l-icaring in the journal be; Z: of the main frame A. is a shaft J, the said shaft J being provided at its inner end with a large miter gear K, and at its outer end with a universal joint L, having in its outer memher a. socket such as illustrated to permit of its ready application to a wriuger such as at present in general use. The. large miter gear K is arranged to cooperate with the miter "gun's F and (l alternately, it being movable horizontally in obvious that when one of the said 'miter gears F or G is in engagement with the gear Kthe Wringer will be driven in one direction, while when the other miter gear F or G is in. engagement with the gear K, the Wringer will be driven in the opposite direction. 1 1
M is a yoke movable in the direction of the length of the shaft C and having loops t at its ends receiving the circumferentially grooved portions of the miter gears F and G.
N is a bar extending and movable through the yoke M and having a fork u straddling the circumferentially grooved portion of the sprocket gear I.
P is a hand lever extending through and the slot of the frame head 7 and connected at o with the yoke M. I
R is a hand lever connected at w with the bar N, and S is a bolt extending through the platform 71, of the frame head 7' and pivotally connecting the levers P and R to said platform.
At T the lever R is provided with a friction-creating protuberance which is adated by bearingon the upper side of the platform 72 under the pressure of the lever possessed of more or less springiness, to hold the lever against casual movement without interfering with the manual operation of the lever.
By manipulation of the lever P, either one of the gears F and G may be thrown into engagement with the gear K or the said gears F and G may be both positioned out of mesh With the gear K. From this it follows that the wringer actuated through the universal joint L may be readily started and stopped; also, that when the wringer is being driven in one directlon it may be expeditiously and easily reversed or driven Z in the opposite direction.
A single attendant is enabled to conveniently control both levers P and R, and by movement of the lever R said attendant may quickly and easily establish and interrupt connection between the'sprocket gear I and the clutch member H and thereby start and stop the Washing machine driven through the said sprocket gear.- I would further invite attention to the fact that the levers P and R may be quickly and easily manipulated, and that the apparatus as a whole is simple and compact, is susceptible of quick and easy installation, and is well adapted to withstand the usage to of kindred nature is ordinarily subjected.
The construction herein illustrated and described constitutes the best practical embodiment of my invention that I have as yet devised, but it is obvious that in the future practice of the invention such changes or modifications may be made as do not involve having upwardly extending portions of different heights separated by a space and also having a head on the upper end of said higher portion provided with a platform and a horizontal slot disposed in a plane main frame, at the opshaft journaled in the disposed at a posite side of said space, and right angle to the first named shaft, a gear arranged in the said space and at the inner end of the second named shaft, movable means on the first-named shaft adapted to alternately rotate said gear in opposite di rections, a yoke connecting and movable with said movable means, and a hand lever connected with said yoke and extending through the horizontal slot in the frame head and pivoted to the under side of the platform on said head.
2. In an apparatus for the purpose described, the having upwardly extending different heights separated by a space and also having a journal box at an intermediate point in the height of the higher portion and a head on the upper end of said higher portion and provided with a platfornrand a horizontal slot disposed in a plane below the platform, and further having on the portions of which machinery upper end of the lower portion a journal box disposed at a right angle to the first-named box, a shaft journaled in the first-named box, clutch members fixed to the shaft and disposed at opposite sides of the first named box, gears loosely mounted on'and movable lengthwise of the shaft and having clutch members complementary to'those.'fixed to the shaft, a yoke connected and movable with said gears, a shaft journaled in-the second-named box of the main frame and having a gear at its inner end disposed in the said space of the main frame and adapted to cooperate with the said gears on the first-named shaft, and a hand lever pivoted to the platform of the higher frame portion and'movable in the slot of said portion and connected to the yoke.
In testimony whereof I have {hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
