SNOW-SHOVEL.

Be it known that I, GEORGE CALVIN P0111, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Ebensburg, in the county of Cambria and State of Pennsylvania, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Snow-Shovels, of which the following is a specification.

My invention is an improvement in snow shovels and consists in certain novel constructions and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide a strong shovel of easy and cheap construction, and with an adjustable handle, so that either edge of the shovel may be used merely by changing the position of the handle.

Referring to the drawings forming a part hereofFigure 1 is a perspective view of the shovel, Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the shovel, Fig. 3 is a plan View with part of the handle omitted, and Fig. 4 is a partial transverse section.

The embodiment of the invention shown, comprises a blade 1, of wood or other suitable material, rectangular in form, and longer in one dimension than in the other.

Each edge of the blade is beveled as at 2, and at its transverse center, and on its underside, the blade is provided with a preferably metal reinforcing strip 3, which is secured to the blade by a plurality of staples l, whose body portion embraces the strip as shown in Fig. 3 with the legs of the staples on each side of the strip, and the points clenched 011 the upper side as shown at 5.

An opening 6 is provided at the center of the blade, the opening also traversing the reinforcing strip 3, and a rivet 7 passes through the opening and the rectangular portion 8 of the handle to be described.

The handle comprises a portion 9 preferably circular in cross section, and a rectangular portion 8 arranged at a slight angle to the portion 9, and the rectangular portion is provided with two openings 10 and 11 therethrough.

The opening 10 registers with the opening 6 of the blade and receives the bolt 7, while the opening 11 is adapted to register with one of a series of openings 12, arranged at angles of l5 with respect to each other, and at equal distances from the opening 6.

side of the opening 6 in the transverse axis of the blade, the latter openings also passing through the reinforcing strip. The first named pair of openings 12 are reinforced on the under side of the blade by rings 13, having an opening registering with the opening 12, and provided with opposite lugs 14, over which are arranged the body portions of the staples 15, the points of the staples passing through the blade and being clenched on the upper side thereof.

A bolt 16 passes through an opening 12, and the opening 11 in the handle, and a wing nut 17 is threaded on to the bolt to retain the handle in its adjusted position. The handle has also a transverse strip 19 secured to the circular portion by a screw 20, which strip is of a length equal to the width of the blade, and rests against the blade when the wing nut is tightened, the strip acting as a brace for the handle, and as a reinforce for the blade.

It will be evident from the description that by removing the bolt 16, and placing it in the proper opening 12, the blade may be arranged with any edge in operative position, and as all are sharpened, the blade will act equally well in any position.

U-shaped washers 21 are arranged on the portion 8 of the handle, each being provided with anopening, the one for receiving the rivet 7 and the other for receiving the bolt 16, and the arms of the washer depend upon each side of the portion 8. It will be understood that the handle is rotatable on the rivet 7.

I claim:

1. An article of the class described, comprising a rectangular blade having beveled edges, and provided with a transverse reinforce at its center, and with a central opening, and with other openings arranged at right angles to each other and at equal distances from the central opening, and in the transverse and the longitudinal axis of the blade, a handle port-ion and a shank portion arranged at an angle to the handle portion, said shank portion having openings therethrough adapted to register with the central opening and with one of the other openings, a rivet traversing the central opening and the registering opening of the shank, a bolt for passing through the other opening of the shank and one of the other openings of the blade, a wing nut engaging the bolt, a transverse strip secured to the handle and engaging the blade When the Wing nut is screwed down, and a reinforcing Washer for the openings of the blade in the longitudinal axis.

2. An article of the class described, comprising a rectangular blade having its edges beveled, a handle consisting of a handle portion and a shank arranged at an angle to the handle portion, a pivotal connection between the shank and the blade at the center thereof, said shank being provided With a series of openings arranged at angles of 45 with respect to each other and at equal distances from the point of pivotal connection of the handle With the blade and .in the longitudinal and transverse axis of the blade, said shank having an opening adapted to register With said other openings, a bolt traversing the registering openings for securing the parts together, and a transverse strip secured to the handle and engaging the blade near the edge thereof for the purpose set forth.
