LOCK.
T all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH HERNIGZ, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at South Bend, in the county of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to looks, and the primary object of the invention is to pro vide a simple and inexpensive padlock that can also be used as hand cuffs to manacle the hands of a person.
Another object of this invention is to provide a simple, durable and inexpensive lock consisting of comparatively few parts, easily and quickly assembled.
With the above and other objects in View which will more readily appear as the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and then claimed.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front elevation of the lock, Fig. 2 is a similar view with the front plate thereof removed, Fig. 3 is a similar View of the lock partly broken away and partly in section, with parts of the lock removed, Fig. 4 is a similar view of the lock with the front plate removed and the lock in an open position, Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional view of the key actuated member, Fig. 6 is a plan of the same, and Fig. 7 is a plan of a latch forming part of the look.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 and 2 designate two semi-circular locking members having the confronting edges thereof provided with semi cylindrical recesses providing when registering two circular openings 3 between said members, the openings being adapted to receive the confronting ends of two chains, a staple, or the wrists of a person, according to the use of the lock. The member 2 at the edge thereof is pro vided with an apertured lug 4 adapted to fit in the bifurcated edge 5 of the member 1, these members being connected by a transverse pivot pin, whereby the member 1 can be swung to an open position relative to the member 2, as best shown in Fig. 41 of the drawings.
The member 2 is solid, while the member 1 is provided with a recess 7 and is cut away upon one side, as at 8, to receive a detachable plate 9, adapted to close the recess 7 and at Serial No. 505,976.
the same time permit of easy access being had to the locking mechanism located in the recess whenever necessary. This detachable plate 9 is connected by rivets or screws 10 to the member 1, and said plate is provided with a key opening 11 surrounded upon the outer side by a strike-plate 12, having a similar slot registering with the slot of the plate 9. The rear side of the member 1 is provided with a key post 13 for a key (not shown) inserted in the slot 11 for operating the locking mechanism.
The locking mechanism comprisesa curved latch 14 and a key actuating member 15, said latch and said member being pivoted upon a pin 16 arranged between the rear side of the member 1 and the transverse bars 17 carried by said member.
The pivoted ends of the latch 14 and the member are cut away, as at 18, whereby the pivoted ends of the latch and member can fit side by side upon the pins 16. The member 15 is provided with a semi-cylindrical recess 19 and with a slot 20, said slot alining with the slot 11, whereby the key can be placed in engagement with the member 15. When the key is rotated, a lug or ward on the key is adapted to elevate the member 15 and raise the latch let. This latch is provided upon its upper face with a protuberance 21 engaged by a spring 22 mounted in the recess 7. The free end of the latch 1 1 is provided with a tooth 23 for engaging in the notch 24 of a keeper 25, carried by the member 2 intermediate the openings 3.
The free end of the member 1 is provided with a movable retaining member 26 having a curved shank 27, extending through an apertured lug 29, arranged in the recess 7. Encircling the shank 27 between the member 26 and the lug 29 is a coil spring 30, and to prevent the shank 27 from becoming accidentally disengaged from the lug 29 by the tension of the spring 30, a pin 31 is arranged transversely of the end of the shank 27.
The function of the member 26 is to maintain the latch 1 1 and keeper in engagement with each other when the lock is closed, this is due to the action of the ejector 26 bearing against the locking member 2 so that the tendency of said member 26 will be to shift the member 2 away from the member 1.
WVith the members 1 and 2 closed, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the spring is maintained under tension with the ejector 26 within the member 1. Immediately upon a key releasing the latch 14, the member l is moved to the position shown in Fig. 4 of the drawings, this being accomplished through the medium of the ejector 26 and the spring 30. In some instances, the memher 1 may be thrown completely open, but the position assumed by the member 1 in Fig. 4 of the drawings is sufficient to allow a staple or the wrists of a person to be released.
The lock in its entirety is made of strong and durable metal, and through the medium of the plate 9 easy access can be had to the recess 7 for repairing or arranging any parts of the locking mechanism that might need renewing or that might become disarranged.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is
A lock of the type described, comprising two semi-circular members pivotally connected together, said members having the confronting edges thereof provided with recesses forming two circular openings, a pivot in one of said members, a spring pressed latch mounted on said pivot, a keeper carried by the other of said members and adapted to be engaged by said latch, a key actuated member mounted on said pivot and located adjacent to said latch for moving said latch out of engagement with said keeper, a spring pressed member carried by one of said members and adapted to engage the other of said members for opening said members when said keeper is released by said latch.
