UNITEDsTArEs PATENT. OFFICE.
JOSEPH DANNHEISER, 0F SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
FILING-CABINET.
To all whom 4it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH DANNHEISER, citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Filing-Cabinets, of,V which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fihng cabinets.
My object is to provide a cablnet suitable for tiling drawings andthe like vertlcal position, in`which the drawing will be suspended in a pocket, and with means for withdrawing any desired drawing when the cabinet is opened, and opening out the drawing rea'dy for inspection and use.
1t has other objects which will be imamfest hereinafter.
The invention consists of the parts and the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter more fully described and claimed, having reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of my filing cabinet. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of same, partially broken. away. Fig. 3 is a plan view of same. Fig. 4 is a broken away perspective showing the clamp and filing pocket. Fig. 5 shows a modification of the clamping device. Fig. 6 shows one way of attaching an index card holder. Fig. 7 is a detail of the spring members 16.
A represents a cabinet or box .of any suitable size, shape or material, and having a topcover 2, and a front door or closure 3; this closure 3 being slidable and pivotally supported by the braces 4 to the lower end of the closure and provided with pivot pins 5 which operate in the guide slots 6 in the sides of the cabinet. The outward movement of the closure or panel 8 and of the brace arms 4 is limited by suitable means, as the slotted segment 7.
The maps, drawings, or other papers to be filed are held by clamp members 8 9 carried by rods 10, and which rods are adapted to rest on a cross-piece 11 and behind a stopbar 12 in the top of the cabinet.
The clamp members 8 9A are made of sheet-metal, one of the members, as 8, being bentaround a rod 10 to embrace the latteri and to turn thereon, and the other member 9 being bent around both the bent portion of the member 8 and the rod, and adapted to have a limited turning movement toward and from the coperating member 8; this Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 23, 1909.
Application led December 4, 1908. Serial No. 465,927.
limiting movement being provided for by' having the bent ortion of the outer member 9 extend a little ess than the full circumference around the bent portion or pivot of the member 8. The two members 8 9 are locked together to grip a sheet, by suitable e means, as the rigid loop member 13.
Secured to one of the members, as 8, is a pocket 14 made of any suitable .materiah like tough manila paper, with the two ends of the strip brought together and locked by suitable means, as the glove fastener 15, adjacent to the lower edge of the grip member 9. The papers or maps or drawings to be filed are placed inside the pocket 14 and gripped by the members 8 9, when the clamping device 13 is slipped down over the. members 8 9. There may be any number of these rods with their respective grippers 8 9 and pockets 14, each pocket containing separate maps or memoranda, and all these pockets or filing devices are slipped into place in the cabinet from the top, with the ends of the rods 10 projecting beyond the pockets and resting, as before said, on the cross-pieces 11.
Extending across each end of the cabinet just above the cross-pieces 11 is a spring plate 1G which is slit and bent, as shown at 17, to provide spring catches, each of which spring catches 17 projects a short distance inwardly over the end of a respective hanger rod 10. The disposition and length of the spring catches 17 are such that if any one of the hanger rods 10 is lifted, a pair of these spring catches 17 will be spread outward to allow the rod to pass u and then spring in again immediately to orma support for the rod, above, and parallel with, the lower support 11.
If now the front panel 3 is opened, assum-A ing it previously to have been closed and with the hook members 18 pushed into full line position within the cabinet, as shown 'in Fig. 1, the withdrawal outward of the panel 3 into operative horizontal dotted line osition, will cause the hooks 19 on the en s of the members 18 to engage the ends of the lifted hanger rod and draw it forward and withdraw the particular pocket and drawing carried by that rod. The act of withdrawing the drawing from the cabinet bends the pocket so that the fastening 15 may be loosened, and the act of opening out the panel 3 opens the pocket and spreads the drawing flat on the table. lIn this operation the stopbar l2 prevents the other rods .from being disarranged. y
The rods 18 have a free sliding movement in the ends of the panel 3,- and their length is approximately equal to the depth of the box. f When the panel 3 is closed these rods are pushed into place out of sight and 1n behind the hangers, substantially` as shown in full lines, Fig. l. In practice, the hooks will drop down when the panel 3 is 1n horlzontal osition presenting a free and unobstructe table or use as a drawing table.
To replace a le, the pocket is buttoned up and the file sli ped down into place, the springing out o a pair of spring catches 17 alloWmg the hanger once more to assume 1ts position, being supported on the crossbars 11.
The various hanger rods are provided with suitable indexes 20 arranged in any appropriate manner.
In Fig. 5, I have shown a modified form 8 of the clamping device, in Which the clamp member is formed from one piece of sheet-metal. The paper forming the pocket is fastened, as shown, by folding the aper around the bar, the clamp member 8 eing bent around the rod outside .of the paper, clamping this in place.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a iling cabinet, the combination of a box having a front panel, with means for turning this panel from a vertical to a horizontal position, filing devices supported in the upper portion of the cabinet, and means carrie by the panel engageable with one of said filing devices to withdraw the same from the cabinet and spread it 011 the table.
2. A filing cabinet comprisin a box havinga movable front and top, ling devices supported in the upper portlon of the cabi-l ,.net, saidiiling devices including rods having tile-holding means, means for supporting the ends of the rods in the cabinet, other means for supporting the ends of any rod at an elevated position from the other rods, and means carried by the movable front of the box for withdrawing the ile of an elevated rod.
3. A filing cabinet comprisin a box having a movable front and top, ling devices supported in the upper portlon of the cabinet, said filing devices including rods havingffile-holding means, means for supporting the ends of the rods in the cabinet, and spring catches in the cabinet and above said means for supporting the rods and normally extending over the ends of said rods and interposed in the path thereof, and on which catches a rod may be supported in elevated position. Y
4. A filing cabinet comprisin a box having a movable front and top, supported in the upper portion of the cabinet, said filing devices including rods having file-holding means, means for supporting the ends of the rods in the cabinet, spring catches in the cabinet and above said means for supporting the rods and normally extending over the ends of said' rods and interposed in the path thereof, and on Which catches a rod maybe supported in elevated position, the front of said box comprising a panel turnable from a vertical to a horizon,
tal position, and means carried by this panel for engagingan elevated rod and Withdrawing it trom the box when the panel is opened out.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing Wit- C. C. CooK.
