To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GUSTAV A. I-IASSEL, of McKeesport, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metallic Ties and Rail-Fasteners, of which the folties.
A still further object, is to provide a simple method of insulation between the rails and themetallic-ties. v
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate applications of my invention, Figure 1, is a side elevational view of one end of a metallic-tie embodying my invention; Fig. 2, a plan; Fig. 3, an enlarged sectional view taken on line IIIIII of Fig. 2; Fig. a, perspective Views of clamp-member and key; Fig. 5, a plan and Fig. 6, a side View of a modified form of tie; Fig. 7 a perspective view oi the form of Fig. 1; Fig. 8, a side view of the form of Fig. 7 showing a rail in cross section; and Fig. 9, a part elevational and a part sectional view, the section being taken on line IX-IX of Fig. 8.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the meeting ends of two adjacent rails, and 3 fish-plates of the usual construction secured thereto in the usual manner.
The metallic-tie, as illustrated and as preferred, comprises an integral structure preferably of cast-steel having a body 4 formed with tapering side flanges 5 and with a centrally disposed elongated opening 6 designed to permit ballast to work up through said opening and thus prevent rocking of the ties.
Located near the two ends of the tie I provide boX like rail supporting-members 7. These members are hollow as shown and are formed by a continuation of the side flanges 5 and a top-plate or member 8. The topplate 8 is slightly crowned as particularly shown by Fig. 9; thereby providing in conjunction with the side walls of the respective supporting-members a flexible rail-support Specification of Letters Patent.

Formed integral with the top-member 8 I provide two apertured upright-membersor lugs 9; these members 9 are spaced apart so as to straddle the base of the rail or the bases of the meeting ends of two adjacent rails. The openings 10 of the members 9 are each adapted to receive a clamp-men1- ber 11. The preferred form of clamp-member 11 is particularly shown by Fig. 4 and as illustrated, comprises a body-portion 12 formed with a groove 13 and an. inwardly projecting tapering member 14. These clamps are designed to be placed in the respective openings of the uprights and project through the same and clamp the rails to the supporting-members of the'ties. By the use of said clamps. coacting with the up right members 9 I dispense with the employment of spikes. To aid in maintaining the clamp-members in the desired positions, keys 15 each having a flange 16 adapted to enter the groove 13, may be employed. In practice, after the key has been placed in position with its flange 16 in groove 13, its end is bent up against the inner face of the upright, as shown. When applied to the fishplates a portion of the base of the clamp enters a notch 17 of the plates as clearly shown in the detail View Fig. 3.
Fig. 5 shows a modified form of tie embodying my invention showing a slightly diflerent body-portion and rail supportingmembers. In this construction I retain the apertured upright-members and the same means for securing the rails to the supporting-members. The means provided for effecting an electrical insulation between the rails and the ties comprise a pad or piece 18 of some suitable insulating material and a protecting metallic-shield 19. 20 designates a downwardly depending flange that may be formed integral with each of the railsupporting members, these flanges being designed to aid in preventing a lateral movement of the ties.
What I claim is:
1. A metallic-tie consisting of a cast-metal structure having a box-like rail supportingmember formed integral therewith, said member having a bearing forthe base of a rail and two apertured upright-members spaced apart to straddle the base of a rail.

2. A metallic-tie consisting of acast-metal structure having a box-like rail supportingmember formed integral therewith, said member having a bearing for the base of a rail and an apertured upright-member, and means for securing a rail to the supportingmember comprising a clamp-member projecting through the upright-member.
3. A metallic-tie having a box like rail supporting-member having a crowned upper plate and formed with an apertured upright, and a clamping-member projecting through the upright.

A metallic-tie having a rail supportingmember formed with an apertured upright, a clamping-member projecting through the upright, said clamping-member formed with a groove, and a key extending into the opening of the upright and having a portion thereof located in the groove ofthe clampingeniember.
The combination with a rail, insulatingmaterial surrounding a portion of the base of the rail, a shield for said material, of a metallic-tie having a boX like rail supporting-member formed with an apertured up right, and a clamping-member projecting through the upright.
6. The combination with a rail, insulating material surrounding a portion of the base of the rail, of a metallic-tie consisting of a cast-metal structure having a box-like rail supporting-member formed integral there with, said member having a bearing for the base of a rail, and an apertured uprightmember, and a member projecting through the upright member.
7. A metallic-tie consisting of a cast-metal structure having a hollow boX-like rail supporting-member formed integral therewith, said member having a bearing for the base of a rail and two apertured upright-members spaced apart to straddle the base of a rail, and a clamp-member projecting through each upright.
8. A metallictie having a rail supportingmember formed with two apertured uprights spaced apart to straddle the base of a rail, and means for securing the rail to the supporting-member comprising a clampingmember projecting through each upright, said clamping-members each formed with a groove, and a key extending into the opening of each upright and having a portion located in the groove of a clamping-member.
9. The combination with the meeting ends of two adjacent rails, of a fisl1plate having an opening formed in its base, a metallic-tie having a rail supporting-member formed with an apertured upright, a clamping-member projecting through the upright and having a portion thereof located in the opening of the fish-plate.
10. A metallic-tie consistin of an integral structure comprising a body-portion having its base formed with an elongated centrally disposed opening and upwardly extending tapering side flanges, and boX like rail supporting-members each formed by the side flanges and a top-plate, said top-plate having an apertured upright.
