JOHN TMWHALEN, or RooKLYN, NEW YORK.
INDICAT ING AND RECORDING DE VICE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed June27, 1907. Serial No. 381,061.
To all whom 12 may concern:
- Be it knoxtn that I, JOHN T. 'WnALEN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Indicat mg and Recording Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This in vuntion relates to speed indicating, regulating and controlling and recording devices, mo1'cpai "'ularly to apparatus of this description which is applicablefand fitted to: vehicles and designedfor the purpose-of in dicating the extent of motion of'thesame, of controlling and regulating such motion and of furnishing a' continuous and permanent record-of the progress and operation, or motion, of vehicles so fitted.
"The object of my invention is to provide simple and eflicient'apparatus of this nature which also may advantageously be employed in conjunction with devices disclosed in my a plication for Letters Patent Serial No; 35,521; q n In the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate like parts in all of theviews, Figure 1 is aside elevation,
' partly section, of my invention. Fig. 2is a top'view of the same, and Fig; 3 is an enlarged, vertical view on line A'A ofFig. 1'.
, to a commutator, "as '7'.
Referring now to the drawings,a is a base. or frame which supports, suitably joarnaled,
' spindle b of the centrifugal overnor 0 Whose yoke d is secured to said spindle while yoke a may slide longitudinally on spindle b, in a,
manner well understoodin the arts .A tubular sleeve 7 is-mounted on the revolving spindle b in such a manner that only longitudinal motion may be imparted to it by. yoke c, with which it engages loosely, a pin' ff engaging with, and sliding in, a slot on one 'of the standards of frame (1, thus preventing sleeve 7 from turning. A-pin ft on sleeve 7 projects horizontally to engage with, and impart oscillatory motion to, gearlever g'and switch-lever it, both of which levers are secured to, and ,revolubly sup- Ported b a suitably journaled short shaft, as g.. witch-lever h is adapted to contact with connecting bars or pieces 6 if .71 secured This commutator j is shown to be made? of tin-insulating substance in the form of a segment provided with a horizontally projecting short shaft by means of which, and with the aid of nut 7'', it may be adjustably held in suitable supports or journals as a. The centers of the supports for the levers g and h and commutator j are preferably in the same line.
A graduated scale, as k, is secured to frame a in such a manner thatthe pointed end of switohdever it, as well as an index finger secured to contact piece .2, may
always be in close proximity to said scale, whatever then'v-positlon should be. The ps riphery ofgearlever 1 has teeth which mesh with the teeth of pinion Zmounted on shaft in, which shaft also carries gear a. A rack 0, slidably niounted in support'c; is adapt ed to receive horizontal reciprocating mo,- tion from gear a, while a pencilor-stylus 72 carried atthe end of said'rack may bear on a suitable sheet or.st1'ip'(n-ot shown) placed on, or around, and lQCLlVlllg uniform mo [tion from drum 3 Drum 9* receives uniform Patented Nov. 23, ENE).
rotary motion aways in the" same direction,
from a spring-actuated motor, as a clock or time-train (not shown), or other suitable motor, a clutch 1" serving to 'discoi'nrect the drum y from the motor shaft 5.. An iutermedial-y shaft t which receives rotary mo! tion, in either direction, directly or in directly from one of the axles or equivalent partof a vehicle, turns gear a which meshes Wltll'PlIllOll c on spindle 5,,of thecentrifugal governor c, and thereby causes sleeve f to turn gear-lever gland switch-lever it to ,an
eXtent'varying with the speed of the vehicle,
regardless "of the direction'in which the vehicle is" moving. A spring w serves to connteract the centrifugal force of the governor ballsand to return the same to their position of rest, as iswell;understoodf Electrical connection with the, conducting bars or strips, or contact pieces, 22' on comn'iuta tor jis preferablyeffected ili'rOiigIithe hollow center of the latter by means of wires or s1m 1lar conductors, as a;
t h The operationof my apparatus is as follows: Assuming the same to be attached to a motor vehlcle or automobile, and shaft 't to rece ve IIIOtlOIl from one of the axles of the vehicle, it is obvious that in consequence of the action of centrifugal force, onthe balls of the governor c any increase in the speed of the vehicle willcause gear-lever g and switch-lever 7L to-turn in the direction as indicated by arrows. ,7 Contact piece 2' on commutator 7' extends below the latter in the form of an index finger pointing onto graduated-scale k. If commutator j is then turned drawings. Whenever switch-lever it rests on contact piece a vehicle will have reached the predetermine and set limit of speed at the rate of 30 miles per hour. Should the speed increase beyond the set limit but a trifle, switclnlever it will continue to turn in the direction of the ar-' row and thereby break contact with contactstrip'z' in consequence of which the explo sions in the'gas engine cylinder will become impossible and the speed be reduced The metallic frame a of the apparatus and switch-lcrer h form part of an electric circuit, or circuits, comprising a battery or other source of electricity, ignition apparatus and fuel or actimting-tiuid controlling devices, substantially as described in-my ap* plication for Letters Patent Serial No. 375,521, but not shown inthe accompanying electric current is sent through the same to a device for throttling the fuel or the fluid actuating the engine, and a similar action for a similar purpose occurs when switch-lever h rests on contact piece 2"v j By the means before described the opcrator of a motor-vehicle is enabled to auto-- matically prevent his machine from exceeding a pro-determined speed limit, andto vary such limit at will by changing the: po-
sitlon of connuntator, 7', that is, within the capacity or powerof the motor or cngme.
While the operation of the vehicle is thus controlled,.by switch lcver it making and breaking elttctrical circuits for bringing into action suitable devices and interrupting the action of others, gear-lever g through intermediary members, causes pencil p to record on a sheet carried by drum 9 by means of a line. the variations in the speed as they occur in sucha manner that the nearer the line de- "scribed by the pencil is to a line at right turned by clock-work or other motors, ,preh
a v i erably so as to make attained revolution in twelve or twenty-four hours, such motion, of course, being uniform as well as entirely independent ofthe necessarily irregular motion of spindletb of centrifugal governor, 0. I As commutator j and smtch-lever k may also be utilized for switching into or outof action other circuits than the ones named 7 either in place of, or inf'addition to, the same, I do not wish to confine myself to the arrangement of circuits herein described,
nor to the precise details of construction relating to my indicating, controlling and recording devices.
lV hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a speed recorder a switch comprising a pivotally mounted switch lever actuated by said recorder mechanism, an adjustable commutator insulated from said switch lever, a contact strip on said commutator contacting with said switch.
lever until a predetermine positionof the switch lever has-been reached, and another contact strip contacting with said switch lever only when the predetermined position ias been reached.
2, In an indicating and regulating device, I
the combination of a governor, a gear-lever, a stylus, a switch-lever, means for communicatin the motion of'the governor to the gearever and switch-lever, and means for communicating the "motion of the geanlever to the stylus. i
, 3. In an indicating and regulating device, the combination ot a governor,a gear-lever,
a switch-lever attached thereto, a stylus,
means for communicating the motion of the governor to the gear-lever, and means for communicating the motion of the gear-lever to the stylus. I
4. In an indicating and regulating device, the combination of a governor, a pivotally mounted gear-lever having a switch-lever attached thereto, a rack, a stylus attached to 100 i an'l rack, gearing) intermediate said rack,
luu gear-lever, and means for communicat-- ing the motion of said governor to said gear lever. Signed at. Brooklyn this 25 day of June," l
