To all whom it my concern:

Be it known. that I, ARTHUR G. VALTER, a

citizen of the United States, and a resident.

of Fremont, -iii the county of Sandusky and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Binding Means for Chairs or the Like; and I dohereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to 'thcaccompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

My invention relates particularly to means for binding together in bundles chairs of the folding type to' facilitate the transportation thereof, but isnot restricted to such use as it may be used for the binding together of any articles for which it is adapted.

The object of my invention is the provision of simple and improved means of this class, which'is eflicient in its operation, easy' of manipulation to engage or release a bun die of chairs, and ada ted for easy adjustment to suit it for binding together different numbers of chairs.-

Referring to the drawings, a and Z designate two bar members of flat or other suitable form which have their outer ends bent to form hooks c, 0 for engaging the rungs of the outer chairs of a pile, as shown in Fig.

The inner end of the bar a is pivoted to one end of a lever-arm (Z while the inner end of the companion bar b is pivoted to said lever-arm a short distance from its point of connection with the bar a, to enable the position of the two bars to be-relatively adjusted by a pivotal movement of the lever arm relative to the bar a. The lever d when folded alongside of the bar a is retained in such position by a stud g on the bar engaging with an aperture h in the, lever. The lever is engaged with. or disengaged from the stud g by being sprung laterally to the bar.

I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction or arrangement of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claim.

Having thus described myi. vention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-

In device of the class described, the combination of two bar members each having its outer end formed in hooked shape and one having its inner end portion provided with a plurality of longitudinally spaced opcnings, 'alever pivoted at one end to the inner end of the other of said members and having a laterally-projecting headed lug l11l1l" mediate its ends for fitting into any one of the openings in' the other of said members whereby apivotal movement of the lever relative to its attached member will effect a relative contraction or expansion or" the hooked ends of said members, substantially as described.
