'Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 16, 1909.
Application filed August 25, 1909. Serial No, 514,510.
' recess when a lateral State of Alabama, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Stops; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact. description of the invention, such as vwill enable others skilled in the art to which appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in door stops and my object is to provide means whereby a dooror other closure may be engaged by the stop heldv in a fixed position and a further object is to provide means for holding the stop against slipping after the door is engaged there- 7 with.
Other objects and advantages will be hereparticularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, Figure 1 is a fragmentary perspective View showing the manner of applyin my improved stop to use. Fig. 2 1s a longitudinal sectional view through the stop and the lower portion of a door. Fig. 3 is a top' plan view of the stop showing the door positioned thereover. Fig. l'is a longitudinal sectional view showing a slightly modified form of stop, and Fig. 5 is a top plan view thereof.- Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding partsthroughout the several views, 1 indicates the body of my improved stop which is preferably oblong and 2 indicates a latch, one end of which is fixed adjacent one'end of the body 1 in any preferred manner as by means of rivets 3, while the opposite end at of the latch rests on the upper face of the. body and adjacent its end farthest, from the fixed end of the latch. Thatpo'rtion of the latch 2 between the rivets 3 and the end 4: is
. bowed upwardly and as the latch is preferably constructed of spring steel, a spring tension will be exerted against an object resting on the latch. 1
At the longitudinal center of the bowed portion of the latch is provided a recess 5, which is formed by bending downwardlyfa portion of the latch, the end walls 6 of the recess being preferably slightly rounded,
whereby an object may be released from the pull is giventhe object.
The body member 1 is provided with a double inclined stud 12' having a screwthreaded stem for its attachment thereto and retention in place, the apex of said stud being about central of its upper surface and extending in the longitudinal plane of said. body member. The latch 2 is provided with a corresponding recess 11in its under surface to receive the double inclined surface of said stud and is adapted toslide longitudinally thereon as said latch is depressed or pressure removed therefrom, said stud thus serving to guide said latch in proper alinement lateral or skewing action thus retaining it in requisite or effective position as it is moved upon said stud. 1
In applying the stop to use the body 1 is placed in position on the floor and the door swung toward the stop and it will be readily seen that in view of the curvature of the latch, the door will readily ride over the same and enter the recess 5 and as the height of the central portion of the latch is greater than the distance between the floor and the lower end of-the door, the spring will be somewhat depressed, thereby giving a tension to the spring which will result in securely holding the door seated in the recess.
and to prevent it from having a Instead of employing the movement of the door for depressing the latch, said latch may be depressed by directing pressure thereon with the foot and this operation may be performed when releasing the door from the latch, although a sufficient force may be employed to releasethe door from the latch without first depressing the same. The stop may be placed at any point on the floor within the path of the door and in order to prevent the stop from slipping after the door is engaged therewith, a strip 8 of felt or similar material may be attached to the lower face of the body 1, which will prevent the body from slipping after downward pressure is applied thereon and said strip. will likewise carpets or marring or inutilating the floor surface where carpets are not used.
As the end 4 of the latch 2 moves back a and forth across the surface of tlie body 1 wlien engaging or being released from the door, said movement may result in wearing the body and to overcome this olnectwnable pi eventthe body from injuring constructed ofmetal thereby protecting the body from wear occasioned by the movement of the latch, said wear plate being preferably attached to the body by means of rivets or the likeilO, and if desired, the
thicknessof the body may be increased as shown'in Fig. 4 of the drawing. I
It will thus be seen that I have provided a very cheap and inexpensive form of door stop and one that can be positioned at any point, in the room within the path of the door and as the wearing parts of the device are preferably constructed of metal, said stop will be practically indestructible from. y
' with a double inclined stud said stud having wear.
It will further be seen that by attaching thestrip of material to the lower surface of the-body, said body will be held against slipping and the floor and covering therefore rotected from injury.
W at I claim is:
' l. A door stop comprising the combination with a body having a strip of pliable material attached thereto, of a latch one end of lion depressed to form a recess,
which is fixed to the body and the opposite end resting" thereon, said latch being bowed between its ends and having its central porthe end walls of said recess being curved and below said latch, said body bcingprovided a securing stem inserted in said body, said a wear plate latch having a corresponding recess in its under side receiving the double'inclincd portion of said stud.
Tn testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
