Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 28, 1909. Serial No. 504,842.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BERNARD T. BECKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lowell, in the county of Lake and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Concrete-Tile Molds, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to molds for making concrete tiles of the class employing a rotary packer for forming the inside of the tile.
Heretofore in machines of this class it has only been possible to make tiles of the same diameter throughout their length.
My invention has for its object the improvement of machines of the class described to the end that tiles may be molded with bell-shaped ends, and my invention consists in the provision of a mold having a bellshaped upper end and mounting a sleeve on the blade shaft to which is secured a flanged ring to seat on the upper end of the bell-shaped mold so as to directthe plastic material into the offset in the mold and thus forming the bell.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Figure l is a vertical sectional view of a mold showing my improved former for the interior of the tile applied thereto, Fig. 2, a plan view of the molding machine showing the operating shaft in section, and Fig. 3, a side View in elevation of a tile made by my improved machine.
In the drawings similar reference characters indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
1 indicates my improved mold which is made in two hinged sections to admit of removal from the molded article and formed with a bell-shaped upper end 2.
3 indicates the packer shaft that is mounted for rotation and vertical movement by mechanism (not shown) and has the packer head 4; secured to its lower end. Shaft 3 is formed with a longitudinal groove 5 and (3 is a sleeve splined on the shaft by means of a key 7 engaging said groove 5.
8 indicates arms extending downwardly from sleeve 6 and 9 a ring, having an annular flange 10 extending from its upper edge, secured to the lower ends of said arms.
11 indicates a ring loosely mounted 011 sleeve 6 having pins 12 projecting laterally therefrom and 13 is a forked lever suitably fulcrumed and engaging pins 12 to handle sleeve 6 and its connections.
In operation the mold l is positioned under shaft 3 and the shaft sleeve 6 lowered so that the packer head l engages the base on which the mold 1 is placed and the ring 9 is seated in the bell-shaped upper end 2 of the mold, the flange l0 engaging the upper edge of the mold. The concrete is then dumped into the mold. lVhen the shaft 3 is rotated the packer head 4 forces the concrete against the inner side of themold where it is compacted by the sides of the head 4 and as the head is raised by the vertical movement of the shaft the upper portion of the tile is formed and the concrete being forced between the ring 9 and the bell shaped end 2 the tile when completed will have a bell shaped upper end as shown in the article illustrated in Fig. 3, and designated A.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In a tile making machine, an outside mold having a bell-shaped upper end, a rotatable and longitudinally movable shaft mounted in said mold, a packer-head secured to said shaft, and a former ring seated on the upper portion of the mold, said ring being mounted to rotate with the shaft and to move longitudinally independently thereof.
2. A tile molding machine comprising an outer mold having a bell shaped upper end, a rotatably and vertically movable shaft mounted in said mold, a packer head secured to said shaft, a sleeve splined on the shaft, arms secured to said sleeve and extending downwardly, a ring secured to said arms to seat in the bell shaped upper end of the mold, and means to raise the sleeve and ring independently of the shaft.
3. A tile molding machine comprising an outside mold having a bell-shaped upper end, a rotatably and vertically movable shaft mounted in said mold a packer head secured to said shaft; a sleeve splined on the shaft, arms secured to said sleeve, a ring secured to said arms and seated in the upper end of the mold, a flange on said ring to engage the upper edge of the mold, a ring rotatably mounted on the sleeve aforesaid and having laterally projecting pins, and forked lever engaging said pins.
