Description

G. WOLSEY L. FUSSEY.
BLASTING CARTRIDGE. APPLICATION FILED PEB. 7, 190e. BENEWBD JUNE 24, 19'09` 939,886. Patented Nov. 9, 1909.-
,GEORGE WQLS-EY AND LO'US FSSE'Y, l0F ALPENA, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNORS TO JAMES sfr-Aras PATENT om-uca.'
MURRAY, F'ALPENA,MICHIGA Y To all whom my concern:
' ing- Cartridges; and we do' hereby solid body, whereby the same handled and alpplied to use.
Beit known that We, GEORGE WoLsEY and L oUIs FUssELcitizens of the United States, residing at Al ena, inthe county of Alpena and State of ichi an, have invented certain new and useful' mprovements in Blastdeclare thet following tov be a full, clear, and exact description of .the invention, such as will en- .able others skilled in the-art pertains to make and use the same. 1
ur invention relates toV new and useful improvements in explosives and more particularly to that class adapted to be used for blasting pur oses and our object is to providev means or forming the explosive into a may be readily A further o ]ect is to so treat forming the body, as to render the same of a v llow detonating quality and at the'same time maintain its `high explosive qualities and a v still further ob'ect is to provide a suitable detonator of a Y through the body',- whereby Mor similar light igh detonating' quality and place the same 1n an opemng. extending the detonator will be protected by the body.
Other objects and advantageswill be hereinafter referred to and more vparticularly pointed out in the claim,
In-the accompanying drawings which are made a part ofthis application, Figure l is a perspective lView of our im roved form of explosive ready to be applic to use. Fig. 2
is Aallongitudinal, sectional View thereof, and,
Figi 3 1s a transverse sectional view, thereof.
Referring to the drawings in which simi-.-
lar reference numerals designate correspondlndicates a casing, preferably formed of tin, metal, 'said casing being preferably tubular which is placed the bod Uxplosive, said body belhg provided with a longitudinal, central openlng 3, which refyera ly extends the full length ofthe body and. 1s adaptedto receive the detonator'4.-
I j and inorder to explodev the detonator, the
usual 'or any preferred form of cap 5` is .entered opening V2"), jat the'openend of A slmemation @fretten Patent. Appuaaon'ala rebruary 7, isos', serial No. 414,854.
the casing 1, to which is secured the usual the product l mg parts throughout 'the several views,.1
and closed'at one end, in 2 of our improved f p BLASTING-CABTRIDGE.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909.` Renewed June 24, 1 909. Serial No. 504,154'.
form of fuse 6.
' In forming the v1body 2 of the explosive, .i
weemploylpicric acid, which is first melted.
and then poured into the casing 1, where the compound remains until it becomes cooled and hardened. p formed lengthwise of the body in any preferred manner, as by boring with a bit or auger, said o ening preferably extending the ful-l length of the body and adapted to 'receive the detonating substance 4, the body -when thus formed, while maintaining a high grade of explosive power, 'is of a low gra-de of detonatingpower, so that the explosive may be readily handled without exploding thesame. l ,l
In constructing means for explodingthe body, we provide a detonator of a high grade of detonating power and to this end we employ one part salt-peter, one part aqueous solution ammonia the strength of the ammoniabeing, about 10 per cent. and three parts picric acid, unmelted, the.v solid ingredients being finely pulverized and thoroughly commingled with `the liquid ingredients, after which the product so produced is entered into the opening 3, and said opening filled from end to end. AAfter this is accomplished, the usual form of cap 5 and fuse 6 are placed in coperation with the detonating substance, or, if preferred, any suitable-form of electrical appliance may be employed- Vfor exploding the detonator;
.The opening 3 is then a' very strong explosive and at the same time provided means for preventing the casual explosion of the compound, thereby rendere ing the same safe to handle without the danQ ger of a premature explosion and .1t w1ll further be seen that by placing the low grade of detonating material around the high grade 'of detonatin material, the same cannot, be readilyexp o ded, except by the use vof the usual form of cap and fuse', or similar exploding devices. If,
What we claim is: e
A blasting cartridge vcomprising an elongated tubular mass "of a high explosive quality inclosing a core of explosivev offa low detonating quality, said core having a l names to this specification in the presence of detonator and fuse attached to one end tWo subscribing Witnesses. thereof, said cartridge being surrounded by I GEORGE WOLSEY.
a' tightly fitting Water-poo'f casing, said cas- LOUIS FUSSEY. 5 ing having its end ad]acent the detonator Witnesses:
and fuse open. JACOB SVANG,
In testimony whereof we have signed our JOHN JENSEN.
