Application filed February 16, 1909. Serial No. 478,217.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view through a pulverizer constructed according to my improvement. Fig. 2 is a horizontal fragmentary sectional view through the ,same. I
This invention relates to a new and useful improvement in pulverizers of that type commercially known as the Williams mills, characterised by the pivoted revolving hammers which act upon the material as it enters the machinevat the hopper or feed end thereof, crushing said material as it rests upon the bottom of the hopper, or
breaker plate, as itis sometimes called, the material being further thsintegrated or ,orushed by the hammers acting thereon as "the material carried over the cage or grinding stirfac The crushed material falls 39 through the openings in the cage or grind- .ing surface into a suitable receptacle located beneath the machine. The hammers or beaters which revolve about the shaft, while made of a material whose resistance to wear is its essential quality, will, in time, wear away at their striking ends, and the farther these striking ends are removed from the breaker plateand grinding surface, the less becomes the capacity of the machine.
It is the purpose of my presentinvention to provide means whereby these revolving hammers or heaters may be adjusted outwardly to take up this wear (or inwardly, if occasionrequires, as when a new cage 5 introduced to replace aworn one), said means consisting of pivgtally mounted hammer supports which carry hammers at their outer ends, and whose inner ends cooperate with rods adjustably mounted in disks so that when a rod adjusted, all of the hammers in that longitudinal row are adjusted. In the drawings, 1 indicates the casing, 2 the breaker plate, 3 the grinding surface or cage, and 4 the cover of the machine, which 5,; may or may not be hung, as desired.
5 is a shaft mounted in the casing, said shafthaving disks'ti fixed thereon, said disks supporting through-bolts 7, on which are pivotally mounted hammer supports 8 in the form of levers whose inner ends are preferably, inclined and whose outer ends pivotally support the hannners't), A single pivot bolt is provided for each row of hammers.
10 are openings in disks 6,-said openings being arranged in groups or series, each hole or opening of a, series being at a different distance from shaft 5. Rods 11 are fitted in these openings, said rods cooperating with the inner ends of the hammer ,sup ports 8.
Patented Nov. 9, 1909. I
In operation, when the hammers are new-' the rods 11 are "positioned in the innermost openings 10. As the hammers wear, rods 11 are taken out and inserted through openings farther away from shaft 5, these changes in the position of rods 11 being from time to time, as the hammers wear.
I am aware that it is old to mount han1- mers on pivot bolts which may be withdrawn and inserted in other openings of a,
series farther removed from the shaft of the machine, to take up wear of the hammers. Such a construction, however, requires some little time to effect an adjustment of the hammers, because the row of hammers, when the pivot bolts are removed, have to be re-adjusted in alinement with the selected opening, according to the adjustment required.
By my present construction, mounting the hammers on levers enables me to effect the adjustment of the striking ends of the hammers without dismantling the row of hammers, the hammers remaining in their mounts during the time that the adjustment:
is being efiected.
I am aware that minor changes in-the oonstriu-tion, arrangement and combination of the several parts of my device can be made and substituted for those herein shown and described, without in the least departing from the nature and principle ofr my -invention. i
In using the expression disks in the" foregoing specification and inlthe following claims, I wish to be understood as not con-v fining myself to circulardisks, asthe partswhich perform the functions of the support ing disks described andv claimed could fbe in the shape of spider-arms, orlother towns,
metal. being cut ,awayat fvarlous places;
where it 'as not needed, to lighten the machine.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a pulverizer, the combination with a easing, of a shaft, disks mounted on said shaft, hammer supports pivotally mounted between said disks, revolving hammers pivotally carried by said sup orts, rods mounted in said disks against wiiieh the inner ends of the hannner supports engage, and which rods are adjustable in the disks whereby the wearot the hammers may be taken up.
In a pulverizer, a easing, a shaft journaied therein, disks mounted on the shaft, :1. series of rods remorabl seated in the disks, a series othammer supports pivotaitv mounted on each of the rods, han'nners earried by said hammer supports and adjustable means seated in the disks and cooperating with the inner portions of the hammer supports for effecting the adjustment of the hammers.
3. ]n a pulverizer, a easing, a shaft journaled therein, disks mounted on the shaft, a series of sets of han'n'ner supports pivotaliy carried between the disks, angular pro ections on the inner ends of the hammer'supports, means adjustably seated in thedisks' and engaging the angular projections on the ends of said hammer supports, and hammers pivotaliv carried by the outer end of the hammer supports.
t. In a puiverizer, a casing, a shaft journaied therein, disks mounted on said shaft, said disks having a series of sets of open ings, each opening of a set being at a different (iiSttUltCaflOlH the shaft than the other openings, rods arranged to be inserted in an) of said o enings, hammer supports pivolaliy arranged between the disks angular projections on the inner ends of said. nnnmer supports, which projections cooperate with said rods and hai'mners carried by the outer ends of the hammer supports.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix in signature in the presenee ot two witnesses, this 8th day of February, 190$).
