LAWRENGE C. IMINOR, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO.
METHOD OF BLEACHING ROSIN.
a simple and economical method of bleaching or making the color of rosin lighter, and my invention consists in the method hereinafter described and claimed.
The drawing is a vertical section through an apparatus in which my process may be employed.
In the drawing A represents a vessel adapted to contain the melted rosin, a suitable gas oven B being provided for heating the vessel A to keep the rosin therein in a melted condition, suitable inlet C and outlet C are provided for admitting and drawing off the rosin, and a suitable hinged cover D is provided for vessel A. The interior of vessel A is preferably lined with a white or reflecting surface a adapted to reflect and disseminate light through the interior of the vessel. At intervals openings a are provided in the walls of vessel A and the bulbs or bulls eyes 6 of the lamps E are inserted therein, the bulbs being tightly fitted in the openings so as to prevent leakage of the melted rosin. The lamps E are of the ordinary mercury vapor or uviol type actuated b an electric current supplied through wires l and so constructed as to emit short ultra-violet light rays as will be readily understood by those skilled in the art.
In operation, the rosin is first melted and introduced into vessel A,.and there heated to maintain it in melted condition. Then the lamps E are turned on, projecting short ultra-violet rays into vessel A where they are thoroughly disseminated by being reflected from the white interior walls of chamber A. I have discovered that the action of the ultra-violet rays is to bleach or lighten the color of rosin, and that the bleaching eifect may be varied by a longer or shorter exposure to the action of the rays,

at the will of the operator. When the rosin is sufliciently bleached it may be drawn off through outlet faucet C and used in the ordinary manner.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred apparatus and steps for carrying my invention into effect, these may be varied without departing from the spirit of the invention. I therefore do not wish to be limited to exact apparatus and steps set forth but What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
'l. The method of bleaching rosin which consists in the artificial production of ultra-' violet light rays and subjecting rosin to the action of said rays, substantially as specified.
2. The method of bleaching rosin which consists in the artificial production of ultraviolet light rays and subjecting melted rosin tothe action of said rays, substantially as specified.
3. The method of bleaching rosin which consists in the artificial production of short ultra-violet light rays and subjecting rosin to the action of said rays, substantially as specified.
4. The method of bleaching rosin which consists in the artificial production of short ultra-violet light rays and subjecting the melted rosin to the action of said rays, substantially as specified.
5. The method of bleaching rosin 'which consists in the projection of artificial ultraviolet light rays into a vessel having light reflecting walls and subjecting rosin to the action of said rays, in said vessel, substantially as specified.
6. The method of bleaching rosin which consists in the projection of artificial ultraviolet light rays into a vessel having light reflecting walls and subjecting melted rosin to the action of said rays in said vessel, substantially as specified.
