. WALL on CABINET BED. I
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 190a.
Application filed November 18, 1908. Serial No. 463 291.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, NAPOLEON B. DOUG- LASS, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident-of the city of Seattle, in
scription progresses and those structural;
features, arrangements and combinations of "parts in which my invention resides, suc- --c1nctlfy defined in my annexed clalms.
Re erring now to the accompanying drawing,-in which my invention in a form now preferred by me, is illustrated, Figure 1 is a side view partly in section showin in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showingthe bed open, or in position for use, and Figs. 3 and 4 are detail fragmentary views, on enlarged scale, illustrating more particularly the swingingly supported leg.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference, [indicates the jamb of the cabi net which may be set into the wall of a roonr'or otherwise provided. Within said jamb is supported by hangers 2, the bed frame to the outer side of which is secured l'langers 2 are 1 secured at 3"toithe sides of said jamb and as at 5 to the side rails t of the bed frame, thereby supporting said frame for vertical swinging to and from a closedpositio'n and also for swinging bodily outwardly of the said cabinet or recess. Side rails 4 are provided at their inner-end portions with extensions 'or arms ,6, having bearing members 7 which may be in the form of rollers, asshown, for engagement with tracks 8, which tracks are arranged to be engaged by said bearing members, during opening movement of the bed, so that in traveling through their arc-' like paths said bearing. members will by engaging said tracks force the bed frame outwardly to the position shown in F ig. 2. hangers 2 swinging on pivots 3 during this operation and consequently lifting to a slight degree the inner end portion of the bed frame. Tracks-8 are preferably flexible and connected to the'fioor and to suitable take up devices, as 9 on the jamb, as shown. By
providing tracks 8 of the cable or other suitable flexible material and of such length that they will lie comparatively slack when the bed is in closed position, a construction is provided wherein projection and retraction of the bed is effected without jar or an,
abrupt action.
Reference numeral 10 indicates the head closure panel for the cabinet or recess in the wall of the room the same being hinged, as at 11 to a relatively fixed wall section 12 of the frame for movement therewith. Wall section 12, as now considered provides a.
compartment or chamber 13 ada ted for reception of counter balancing weights 14. Panel 10 is guided in its upward movement by forwardly extending arms 22, which are construction is compact and therefore very desirable, especially when the bed is arranged in the recess in a Wall.
Legs, as 15 are provided preferably on pivoted at 22' to the slde of j amb 1, which each side of the free'end portions of the bed frame, the same being pivotally supported in slots 16 of panel 3 and adapted, when in closed position, to engage in recesses or-seats 17 extending from said slots 16, as shown. To effect the swingin of le s 15 to an open position simultaneously Wit the projection of the bed frame, I provide said legs with extensions 18, to which one end of flexible connections, as '19, are connected, the other ends of said connections being secured at 20 to the jamb. Extensions 18, are provided with curved surface portions, as 18, on
which flexible connections 19 engage when the legs are in closed position, to. enable a desired purchase being bad to effect the opening movement of said legs. bed fr-ameis swung u wardly, legs 15 swing by gravity to a close position and springs, as 21'bearing thereon tend to hold the same against accidental outward movement.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is:
1 A cabinet of wall bed comprising a casing, a frame provided with a bearing member, means for suspending said frame in vertical position for swinging movement to its lowered position and for bodily move- When the v ment in an outward direction, and a flexible track secured to said casing at points above and below the lower end of said frame and arranged for engagement by the bearing member on said i 'ame to effect bodily movement of said frame in an outward direction during swinging thereof to its lowe"ed poeition.
A cabinet or Wall bed comprising a frame provided with a bearing member means for suspending said frame in vertical, position for swinging movementfto-i'ts 10wered position and [or bodily movement in an outward direction, and a, flexible track arranged for engagei'nent by the bearing member on said frame to efl'eet bodily moyement of said "frame in an outiard direction durmg and to said frame, said irmnelbe'img
