To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB Hrrznn'r, citizen of the United States, residing at Onaway, in the county of Presque Isle and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail Fasteningaof which the following is a specification. a
My invention pertains to means for seating railway-rails and fastening'the same to sleepers of various descriptions; and it contemplates the provision for said purposes of easily applied and inexpensive means calculated to elfectually prevent spreading or turning-over of rails. I
With the foregoing in mind, theinvention will be fully understood from the following description and claims when the same are read in connection with the drawings, accompanying and forming specification, in which: Y o
Figure 1 is a transverse section-illustrating seating and fastening means constructed in accordance with my invention, as properly arranged relative to a sleeper and a' rail. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 2-2 of Fig. 1, looking downwardly. Fig. 3 is a plan view of the base plate comprised in my improvements. Fig. 4 is a" detail section, taken in the plane indicated by the line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a side elevation illustrative of the manner in which two adjacent rail-holding members at the same side of therails may be connected by andformed integral with a longitudinallydisposed plate adapted to serve after the manner of a fish-plate in connecting the adjoining ends of two rails. Fig. 6 is a view like Fig. 1, taken in the plane indicated by the line 6-6 of Fig. 5.
Referring by letter to the said drawings and more particularly to Figs. 1 to 4, thereof: A is a sleeper of any suitable construction and material, and B is a rail arranged relative to the sleeper in the conventional manner. Inter-posed between the sleeper and the rail is the base plate 0 of myimprovements. The said base plate is provided with a ertures a and b or other suitable apertures for the passage of fastening spikes c, and is also provided with notches 03. These latter are formed in the upper side of the plate, adjacent the ends thereof, and extend in the direction of the width of the plate, as shown in Fig. 3. The base plate is also r provided with vertically disposed apertures e, of a size for the passage of bolt heads part of this hereinafter described, and from the said bolt holesc grooves f and slots 9 extend toward the center of the plate; the said grooves fbei-ng formed in the underside of the plate and the slots gin the upper side of the plate, as will bereadily-understood by comparison of Figs. 3, and 4. I Arranged on the base plate C and on the .base of the rail at opposite sides of the web thereof are the holding members D of my novel means. The said holding members have their inner portions shaped to fit over the rail base "and form abutments for the edges ofsaid base, and ontheir outer portions, which are preferably. though not necessarily bifurcated as indicated by h, the members are provided with depending terminals i,'designed to seatin the notches cl of the base plate with a view of preventing movement of the members in opposite directions and in that way removing strain from the connecting bolts E. The outer portions of the holding members D are preferably bifurcated as stated in order to render said members light without impairing their efliciency for the purpose stated {and it will be noted by reference to Fig. 1 that the upper sides of the 'inner portions of the members are inclined upwardly toward the web of the rail. The bolts E are arranged with their heads in the grooves f of the base plate C and their shanks extending upwardly through the base slots 9 and the apertures j in the members D, and on the upper portions of the bolts are arranged nuts F, between which and the members D resilient washers G are interposed. By reason of the relative arrangement of parts as described, it will be noted that the bolts E may be placed with their heads in the openings e, and then the bolts may be moved inwardly, the bolt heads moving in the grooves f, and the bolt shanks moving in the slots 9. With the bolts properly positioned the members D are placed to receive the bolts in their apertures j, after which the resilient washers G and the nuts F are applied in the order stated.
l/Vith the parts arranged as hereinbefore set forth, it will be manifest that the rail will be securely held down on the base plate C, and that the members D will reinforce both sides of the rail web and base and consequently will eifectually prevent lateral movement of the rail in either direction and will also preclude any tendency of the rail to turn over.
When deemed expedient, the holding members D at the same side of two meeting rails B, may be joined through the medium of a longitudinally disposed plate H, as shown in Figs. 5 and 6, and the said plate H, which is preferably integral with the members D may be used as a joint between the two rails, as illustrated. I would also have it understood that when deemed desirable holding members of the kind shown in Figs. 1 and 2 may, without involving departure from the scope of my claimed invention, be carried a suitable distance up the rail web, and may be connected thereto by a transverse bolt, to brace and prevent spreading or turning of rails.
It will be gathered from the foregoing that my improvements are simple and adapted to be easily applied, and that when repairs are necessary the same may be made with as much facility as when ordinary rail seating and fastening means are employed.
The constructions herein illustrated and described constitute the best practical embodiments of my invention that I have as yet devised, but it is obvious that in the future practice of the invention such changes or modifications may be made as do not involve departure from the scope of my invention as defined in the claims appended.
Having described by invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. In means for the purpose described, the combination of a base plate having suitably spaced notches in its upper side and extending in the direction of and throughout its width and also having vertically disposed apertures, spaced from said notches, and grooves and comparatively narrow slots extending inwardly from the said apertures;
said grooves being formed in the under side of the plate and said slots in the upper side thereof, a rail arranged on said base plate and between the said notches thereof, apertured rail-holding members arranged on the base plate and the base of the rail and extending from the web of the rail in opposite directions and having depending terminals at their outer ends disposed in the said notches of the base plate and at opposite sides of the said slots, bolts having their heads disposed in the said grooves of the base plate and their shanks extending upwardly through the slots in the base plate and the apertures in the holding members, and means on the bolts for holding the holding members thereto.
2. In means for the purpose described, the combination of spaced sleepers, base plates arranged thereon and having spaced notches in their upper sides and extending in the direction of their width, rails superposed on said base plates and arranged end to end, rail-holding members arranged on and conneeted with the base plates and also arranged on the bases of the rails and extending between the rail webs and the said notches and having de aending terminals disposed in the latter, ant longitudinally disposed plates disposed at opposite sides of and connected with the rail webs and extending between and joining the holding members on the spaced sleepers and base plates.
