REINFORCING-BAR FOR CONCRETE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 10, 1908.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J AMES M. DUDLEY, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Bessemer, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Reinforcing-Bars for Concrete, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to reinforcing means for concrete and other constructions, and is adapted to be embedded in the composite structure.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of reinforcing means, such as metal bars or members for concrete structures and having gripping surfaces for anchoring the said bars or members, and thereby strengthening the composite body-covering surrounding the same. 1
A further object of the invention is the provision of a reinforcing means, such as a bar or member having gripping surfaces which are so designed and positioned relative to each other as to give to the said bar or member a substantially uniform cross sectional-area'which is approximately of the same cross sectional-area as the original stock.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a reinforcing means having continuous gripping surfaces arranged within opposite adjacent marginal edges of each faceof the bar throughout the longitudinal length of the same.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists. in the construction, combination and arrangement thereof, as-herein after described and as'illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which discloses the preferred embodiment of said invention, however, I may make changes, variations and modifications such as come properly within the scope of the claims hereunto appended, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings :-Figure l, is an enlarged perspective view of one form of the invention. Fig. 2, is a transverse section of the same. Fig. 3, is a still further modification of the invention. Fig. 4, is a transverse section thereof.
Similar reference characters indicate corresponding pa'rts throughout the several views in the drawings.

In the drawings the numeral 2, indicates the reinforcing bar or member which may be of any suitable shape and material, however, preferably of substantially rectangular shape in cross section and made from metal.
The bar or member 2, preferably has its longitudinal edges rounded as 3, throughout its length and within opposite adjacent faces of the said bar or member 2, are continuous fluted or corrugated gripping surfaces as ribs 4 and 5, arranged in diametrically opposite pairs on the faces, respectively of the same, however, it is obvious said bar or member may have one or more pairs of correlated gripping surfaces in faces thereof.
The gripping surfaces as ribs 4, and 5, on diametrically opposite'faces of the bar or member 2, are formed with fluted or corrugated sidewalls 6, producing widened or crest portions 7, with respect to the decreased intermediate or neck portions 8, and said widened or crest portions 7 of the ribs 4, on diametrically opposite faces of the bar or member 2, are positioned relative to. the decreased orneck portions'S, of the ribs 5, on diametrically opposite remaining faces of the said bar or member 2, in cross sections, thereby giving a uniform cross sectional-area to the latter to maintain the strength of the same.
In Figs. 4 and 5, is shown a modification of the bar or member 2, the same being provided with continuous grooves 15 located centrally, in each face of said bar or member, and which are formed by fluted or corrugated walls 16, producing widened or crest portions 1'7, with respect to decreased or neck portions 18, of the said grooves.
.The widened portions 17, of each groove 1.5, are diametrically opposite each other in opposing pairs of faces'of the bar or member 2. It will be noted the widened or crest portions 17, in diametrically opposite faces of the said bar or member 2, are positioned relative to the decreased or neck portions 18, of the grooves in the adjacent diametrically opposite remaining faces of sections of the latter a substantially uniform area to give the requisite strength thereto.-
In referring to a pair of ribs I mean those ribs on diametrically opposite sides of the bar; in Figs. 1 and 2 the ribs on the upper 'the bar or member, thus maintaining in cross and lower faces constitute a pair and the ribs on the opposite side faces constitute a pair; in Figs.- 3 and 4 the ribs on diagonally opposite corners constitute a pair.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is I 1. A reinforcing bar having ribs arranged thereon in pairs, the ribs of each pair lying upondiametrically opposite portions of the bar, the plane including the ribs forming one'pair lying approximately at right angles to the plane which includes the ribs of the other pair, the ribs of each pair having alternatmg wide and narrow portions of substantial dimensions.
' 2. A reinforcing bar having ribs arranged thereon in pairs on the sides of the bar and removed from the corners thereof, the axes of one pair lying in a plane at approximately right angles to the lane which includes the axes of the ribs ot the other pair, the ribs of each pair having alternating wide and'narrow portions of substantial dimensions which are similarly arranged in ribs of each pair and relatively staggered in ribs of different pairs.
