This invention has reference to improve ments in typewriter attachments andv is designed more particularly as an attachmentto be applied to typewriters ior operating the shift key which latter in. the standard or universal keyboard is at the left-hand end 1 of the lower line 03"; key levers.
The present invention is-an. improvement over the structure shown and described in an application Serial No. 169,"?59 tiled by me on December 29., 1908,. for improvements in typewriters. in. the structure shown in the said application the shift key is actuated by a lever extending across the keyboard beck of the space bar and provided with s manipulating member intermediate of of the keyboard, but this structure is such as would necessitate the employment of skilled labor to secure the device in place.
With the present invention this is avoided since no change whatsoever required in the frame of the machine and the attachment may he applied by any user of the machine although unskilled in the use of tools. The attachment may be very cheaply constructed since the clip 3 may be stamped out of sheet metal and the parts thereof bent into the desired shape, while the shaft 7 and its con tinuation may be made out of heavy wire or a refund bar of suitable gage while the manipulating portion 11 may be molded outof rubber or celluloid or like material.
The general advantages of this invention have been fully set forth in the aforesaid application, but it may be stated herein that with keyboards of the type shown in the:
drawings it is customary to move the shift key with the little finger of the operators hand and since the entire carriage of the typewriter must be moved by means of this shift key a greater task is imposed upon the weakest finger of the hand than upon any of the other and stronger fingers. I
By means of the present invention the stron est member of the hand, namely the thum may be employed to cause the shifting of the carriage, and because of the central location of the shift key extension forming the subject matter of the present invention, the shifting of the carriage may be readily brought about by the use of the thumb of either hand of the operator atwill. It will be observed that the attachment is adaptable to different commercial forms of typewriters in some without any modifications whatsoever of the structure shown in the drawings and to others with some slight modifications of the shape or length ofthe parts, the structure remaining substantially the same in all instances. -It will also be observed that the longitudinal axis of the shaft 7 is parallel with the length of the spacing bar and at right angles to the length of the shift key. Furthermore, the manipulating end 8 of the shaft and the shift key engaging end 14: thereof extend from the shaft in the same direction and while there is some increase of leverage, the movement of the manipulating end 11 is but little more than the key end 13 of the shift key.

An attachment for typewriters com prising a clip adapted to engage and be secured to the frame of a typewriting machine, and a shaft journaled in the clip and having one end bent to over-ride the space bar of the machine and the other end bent to engage the shift key lover of the machine.
2. An attachment for typewriters comprising a sheet metal clip adapted to engage and be secured to the frame of a typewriting machine and having an alined portion bent into journal bearings, and a shaft journaled in the bearings formed on the clip and having one end bent to over-ride the space bar of the machine and the other end bent to engage the shift key lever of the machine.
3. An attachment for typewriters comprising a sheet metal clip of U shape having centrally located wings extending from the free edges of the legs of the clip and having portions of the edge of one leg bent into cylindrical form to ,:onstitute journal bearings, and a shaft extending through the journal bearing formed on the clip and having one end bent to over-ride the space bar of the machine when the clip is attachedland the other end. bent to engage the shift key lever of the machine. 4. An attachmentforv typewriters com prising a clip adapted to engage and be secured to the frame of a typewriting machine and provided on one side with bearings, and a shaft journaled in said bearings and movable about an axis parallel with the length of the clip, said'shaft having its ends bent in the same general direction, one end terminating in a manipulating handle adapted to over-ride the space bar of the machine when the clip is applied and the other end being bent'to under-ride the frame of the machine and to extend along the shift key lever at the corresponding end of the machine and terminating in a hook portion adapted to engage over said lever.
