Description
G. F. CRANE.
AIR TIGHT FIRE PAIL.
APPLICATION FILED IEB.20, 1906.
939,220, Patented Nov. 9, 1909.
ill
UNITED STATES CHARLES E. CRANE,
OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
AIR-TIGHT FIRE-PAIL.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. CRANE, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Air-Tight Fire- Pails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improvement in air tight fire pails, and has for its object a pail designed to hold water to be used in case of fire, said pail being provided with suitable supporting means and also with a cover permanently attached to the ail for the purpose of preventing loss of water through evaporation, the cover being so attached that the act of removing the pail from its support will automatically lift the cover from said pail.
The particular construction shown and described herein is an improvement upon a pail of this kind for which application for patent was made October 25, 1907, Serial Number 399,209.
The invention consists of the novel features of construction hereinafter described, pointed out in the claims, and shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the pail in its normal position. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view therefrom. Fig. 3 is a vertical section through the pail and cover, the cover being shown in elevated position.
In these drawings 1 represents the pail which is preferably provided adjacent the top with a heavy ring 2 to hold the pail in proper shape and the pail is normally supported within a ring 3 which ring is carried by an arm 4 the lower portion of which is bent into a horizontal plane forming a bracket 4P upon which the bottom of the pail rests. The arm 4 is journaled in a suitable wall bracket 5. The pail is provided with a removable cover 6 to which is connected a bail 7 which extends through upon Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 20, 1908.
Iatented Nov. 9, 1909.
Serial No. 416,914.
I the inner side of the cover and eyes 7 are formed upon these inner end portions of the bail. Upon the inside of the pail and arranged diametrically opposite each other are two vertically extending guide rods 8 the end portions of which are angled so that the body portions of the rods are spaced from the sides of the pail. Connecting links 9 are loosely engaged with the .eyes 7, respectively, and with the guide rods 8 by means of rings 9 carried by the lower ends of the links 9. It will be obvious that by grasping the bail 7 and pulling upward the cover will be lifted vertically above the pail, lifting the links 9, the rings 9 sliding upon the guide rods 8 until the upper portions of said rods are reached when movement of the cover 6 relative to the pail will cease and the pail will be lifted by the bail and the links 9.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the kind described comprising a receptacle, a cover fitting upon'said receptacle and movable vertically with respect thereto, guide rods arranged in said receptacle and carried by its sides, and links pivotally connected to the under side of the cover and at a distance from its edges, said links sliding upon said guide rods, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A device of the kind described comprising a pail, guide rods secured to the pail upon opposite sides of the center of the pail, a cover, a bail carried by the cover, the ends of the bail extending through the cover, and connecting links engaging the ends of the bail at their upper ends and in slidable engagement with the guide rods at their lower ends.

VINCENT S. MAGION, GEORGE W. MARSHALL.
